They "kill" it, well, another one just rolls off the assembly line.
That seems to be what they are doing too come to think about it. Every time an American kills a "terrorist", another few pop up, amongst different countries, hell, even in America itself.
Ha, Im pretty sick of this kind of "just give them the money, after all, last year you made XX million" attitude.
Here in New Zealand, I notice it often. A Samoan family moved here 7 years ago, the mother was a school teacher and she got sick, the family of 4+ was quite "hard up" and with just one income earner the bills stacked up. The mother was on a respirator, at home, and the power company turned off the power on them, they owed about NZD$160 dollars at the point with more than $400 to be paid back within a month. The mother died and they say its because they didnt have power.
The hospital that gave the woman the equipment said that she wouldnt need it 24/7, if she was in such bad health she would have still been in hospital. They said how she would have needed it less than 2 hours a day if at all. The never gave any more news interviews about that fact again.
There have been all sorts of protests and complaints, petitions etc filed against the power company. There were some calling the contractor who cut the power cable a murderer and that he should do time.
Our Prime Minister visited, the power company CEOS gave over ten thousand dollars towards the funeral, which the family wasnt going to use for the funeral, new car or something no doubt on the way, and theres been a huge uproar about "evil companies just caring about profit". I hope this doesnt happen for IBM on this issue, they deserve to be paid no matter how well off they are.
Now the power company has sent out letters to all its customers saying "we are sorry and we are changing our policies, if you are about to have your power turned off please ring this number" and talk of how companies will be regulated to make them give the poor-er people so much cheap power a month etc. Its just crazy.
Just getting back to the Prius thread a while back, this just in today from Tesla Motors, the electric car company:
"Batteries? Pink bunnies? I smell a lawsuit
: Tesla Motors, the Silicon Valley electric car start-up that this fall will roll out the meanest, greenest roadster ever, has already found a potentially lucrative side business emerging from its research. The company announced today a new division, the Tesla Energy Group, to sell its lithium-ion battery technology. And the division debuted with a contract in hand -- a deal to sell battery packs to Think, a Norwegian maker of electric cars bouncing back from bankruptcy and a failed Ford ownership.
In a blog post, Tesla CEO Martin Eberhard says it took seven generations of design and more than a few "Fourth of July" moments in the testing before producing a multi-cell battery pack that was safe, light and mass produceable. "
I believe Fourth of July is when you shoot off fireworks? Ha, thankfully they have caught the bugs (they tell us) before it goes into production. But what about when all the companies rush to copy them, since they are the Lamborghini of hybrid/electrics and Ford releases Pinto 2.0?
I bought a decent RC Helicopter and the good folks were good enough to give me this LiPo charger which is simpler than your cell phones charger. I'm not game to use it.
My point is that there will be plug in hybrids, or all electric cars, that use more dangerous storage methods battery wise. Not all will be so tame as NiMH. The video was to show a simple thing like over charging, would you feel safe knowing your absent minded grandmother might just leave the car on for "a bit too long"? And then a much larger version of that goes off in her garage, connected to the house?
We are a long way off all electric cars that have any kind of decent battery life. I think like most things when we get to the mark, we will then pass it, so instead of just the required 10 we will have ones that can go till 20 etc. Maybe the future batteries/fuel cells will be safer than anything we have today. But I'm sure there's going to be a Chernobyl or something to taint the technology.
but of all the cars in the world, the whole world, not just america, not many will do this when they get overcharged
I'd rather my car just dribbled a little petrol out the side wouldnt you?
I realise that the Prius doesnt have a LiPo battery, but I dont think that future hybrids will be as tame. I have never seen a Prius on the street here in Invercargill but from what I understand they are hardly the most manly of cars. I think that hybrid makers should focus on a Jaguar E Type kind of car rather than some soccer "mom" kind of thing. We all know that Hybrids can let loose, and do so efficiently without wasting oil, without emissions etc so why not push for that? I know what I would want to drive.
Firewire is used in a modified version for the data bus of the F-22 Raptor, the most advanced fighter currently used. And we all know thats never failed.
How many people who dont have the Internet have no idea it exists? How many of those who have a computer, but without the internet (my Grandmother) would like this CD? Who wouldnt! Id give it to her in a flash. It doesnt cost anything, and can easily be included as just a little present. I dont see why anyone can put this down, its free, without any kind of contract or flaw, and still useful.
BT is a cellphone thing. It takes 1KB contact files and syncs them to your computers contact list. It does not do 10MB mp3s, you cant download a GB torrent through it, although you can use it for all those sorts of things, that would just be stupid and not what its made for. When you're talking about networking, BT is the 100 dollar laptop project, its cool because its quirky but its slow as hell. You wouldnt use it for anything else because it just sucks. Wait till WIMAX or something comes out that hits 100MB a second, with great range, i dont think they will bother with BT then. If its just a power thing, "theres just not enough juice for wifi etc" then why do they keep putting in more features that use the battery like crazy. Im talking about video playback hardware etc, you could have a hundred hour battery life phone if all you wanted was talking. Come to think about it, why dont they use BT instead of the cellphone towers current technologies? Because it would save so much power dont you know! Ill let you ring up your cellphone maker and ask them about that, feel free to take the patent.
I never said you were starting an argument, ill let you look back at our messages if you want a source of my statement there. Christ. I feel sorry for the Indian call center people who have to deal with silly ideas like "BT is the best way to wirelessly do stuff" all day. I've already wished you good luck with your life, and was just hoping you would see the damn light.
One last reply from me, "Bluetooth isn't a replacement for ethernet, it's a replacement for USB 1.1." you started all this discussion, asking, an open question, for "why dont we use bluetooth for networking since it uses less power than wifi" to which i responded that it was so much slower as you will see, just HELPING YOU since you had a question that nobody had bothered replying to. I dont think anyone else has replied to it yet, take from that what you will.
I dont use Slashdot to make new enemies. I dont give helpful advice to an unanswered question to start fights. Thats not fun for me. If you still think BT is better than wifi for short range networking, then ill let you keep bringing up your question, you can petition to Apple or Microsoft or Dell or whoever you want. And if everything faster, and newer gets taken away and we ditch them completely for something older, and slower- which does use less power -with worse performance then im willing to say "ok argent, im wrong." Thats not hard for me to do. Good luck with your life argent.
You know I only replied to your message because I was trying to help. I dont want to argue back and forth about BT and whatever. Soon enough, Wireless USB is coming out and thats your problem over. So you would say that the cd rom is an "extension" of the floppy drive, which is an extension of magnetic core memory which is an extension of....
Right oh, have you actually used Bluetooth? I have it on my V3 and laptop through a usb bluetooth interface. Let me tell you, it sucks. I can have speeds up to like, 20KB only for a short time, and they drop pretty fast. Its fine for the Bluetooth headset I use but overall , for me, its very very slow. The PS3 can also cure cancer, according to its specs remember (PS im all for the PS3 btw). Just because it "can" doesnt mean it "will". They are trying to sell you on their product.
If BT is sooooooooo good, a silver bullet, then why doesnt everything use it? Hmm? How come everything you own doesnt use BT? The PSP should be ideal for a BT addition, but it doesnt have it! What gives?
The replacement for USB 1.1 WAS USB 2.0! Its like that "record players with a laser so that they dont wear out. And smaller grooves, pits if you will. And the records should be smaller and more shiny!", we have that, its called the CD! (and then DVD, Blu-Ray...)
BT is a heck of a lot slower. Really really slow. Sure Bluetooth 2.0 (which i dont use) is faster , but compared to oh say, the new N standard, I mean, its not going to work. Its like those cameras that have bluetooth, "wireless photos!" you say , and it takes 20-30 minutes to send the photos, which have to be in range and preferably not moving about, for what would take 20 seconds through USB. I think all cameras should do wireless something, its very easy and cheap to put in, i hear the PS3 has both BT and WIFI added in for about a buck a piece, and looks good on the features list. Taking one photo from outside the house, having it sync onto the computer and email to the address you selected on your cameras contact list, thats all very do-able and i think useful, all while you sit out in the sun.
hmm, I live in NZ where we are rather liberal and against Nuclear Power, guns etc. OUR POLICE FORCE DO NOT HAVE GUNS. Let alone children in schools! Ha, when I put a dvd on like Die Hard etc, and you see all the American officers running around shooting up cars that catch on fire, after guys with M16's I get such a laugh. We do have an equivalent of SWAT that are armoured, with M16s etc but our usual police force is lucky to have a baton as far as I know. They also have pepper spray and soon, tasers too, but thats not very well liked by the public.
I have heard that back with Columbine, the two shooters entered the building and passed an unarmed security guard, they killed him. Maybe if he was armed he could have at least hurt one of the pair, best case he could have stopped the whole thing.
Jeez I'm slow, but here in New Zealand, The Lord of The Rings was actually "beamed" to America, something to do with showing how far through they were to the producers in Hollywood etc, if only I had my Satellite dish pointed at the stream and pushed record on the vcr...:(
I like your post a lot, but just adding to the bit about third party software, Im currently a windows user, have wanted to switch to a Mac since late 1999, but still haven't because of the costs + upgraded models. Case in point, the Macbook Pro, I was all for a PB G4 but got put off when I heard of the new "cheaper, 4-5x faster" model coming out. Typical Osbourne situation. I've found in my general internet travels a hell of a lot of great freeware for Macs! Its incredible, from things to use the Apple "extras" better, controlling the backlit keyboard better, using remotes for other things etc, to things like easier and better ways of converting movies to PSP, iPod formats. And then Sound editing, well, I've found so many great programs that I cant use on windows! I should be complain to MS that theres no market for quality Third party software on windows!
Thats quite a rant there! If you dont like Apple, and I take it from your standard Apple Bashing Comments "Apple Premium" "forces you into... closed system" "good looking computers are for gays and girls" that you dont, then just ignore the Apple section of/.!!! Its not hard, Im not that into Linux, you dont see me reading about this and that and saying "but but but, linux is hard to install!" so why bother taunting Mac users?
Its really good that they do make you take a leap up, its revolution, you could claim that the outlook user could do just fine in friggin dos if all they do is check email, why didnt you claim that? Oh, because that wouldnt be bashing Apple would it!
Says who? The Media? "oh, all fanatics run around shooting off their AK47's into the air while driving around shouting down with america, bush is the devil and other crazy things"?
Why do you think Fanatics have to be crazy? Because they do things that you, a "sane" person wouldnt do? Because they would die for something?
I think its just the Slashdot Sony Stereotype now, remember when the iPod came out? "oh, its just another MP3 player" "its too expensive" "it only works on macs and that's like 5% of the market, yawn" etc. Give things a chance!
Sometimes I just find it easy not to read the discussion any more since it seems to be the same comments over and over.
BTW, my favourite iPod release comment was along the lines of "put your hand up, keep it up if you have a mac, firewire, itunes, $500 or whatever in American dollars etc. Thats the iPod market"
In a discussion where we are talking about one mistake in a car like the whole system crashing , its relevant! A typo is when you make a mistake typing something in, but you didn't see a difference between steal and steel, its like how many kids get there and their mixed up.
I was just hoping you would see the irony, its nothing personal.
You "remember the good old days" and yet your post reads like a TXT! Its "STEEL" not "steal"! Don't worry, I'm sure your next car will come with a spell chequer!:)
Well, I'd still put the Spitfire above the SR-71 myself! What about the B2 Spirit bomber, you know that little thing that costs $2 BILLION of your dollars? Its pretty nice, the vents and windows ontop of the flying wing. I also like the F-117 of course, I like the angles. My top 3 would be
I think the F-14 Tomcat was photogenic, all of TopGun featuring it. I like the wings, they look Hollywood enough but are actually functional.
I really like the SR-71, sometimes when I see a modern day picture of it it looks dated, the engines etc dont look current, but its still a great design.
But the Spitfire has to be THE nicest looking plane ever built:)
That seems to be what they are doing too come to think about it. Every time an American kills a "terrorist", another few pop up, amongst different countries, hell, even in America itself.
