taking note of legacy ports can be very important. I bought a laptop about a year and a half ago, and last semester I had to use an eval board for a class. The board was programmed by a serial connection, and guess what my laptop did not have.
However you can get USB to serial adaptors in Staples or most places that sell PDA's (had trouble finding one in stock at best buy)
