During preproduction for Star Wars, the original ship designs were sleek and shiny. Unfortunately, at the scale they were built, they had a tendancy to reflect the camera and crew back into the image. Thus the discolored sheetmetal with doodads tacked on. Only with the advent of computer rendering do you begin to see polished surfaces on spacecraft more often...

  2. Skill Set Thrash on Changing Jobs for Job Satisfaction? · · Score: 1
Having lost my job about three weeks ago, I would definitly consider leaving my current career (unemployment) for another. :-)

I've worked successfully as a developer in one form or another for the last ten years, but I'd definitely consider a switch to a new field where the skillset doesn't change as often.

The challenge is that you get a job working for a company that uses technology A. But technology A inevitable falls out of favor over time. Large companies are often so invested in A, though, that they don't change to new technology B very quickly. It's easy to end up in a situation where your skill set is no longer as marketable, unless you spend nights and weekends learning technology B on your own. But even then, you only have "hobby" experience and not professional experience...

Ahh, heck with it. I'm just gonna go sell shoes.

Always consider the source. I'm a fan of news.com and their coverage, but when reporting on technology issues, they generally seem to have a pro-technology slant to their stories. I think the slightly "rah rah" attitude there is partly to help build/maintain some of the excitement that existed back in the late 90s in order to keep their readership up.

Contrast this with the story from the Associated Press. Rachel Konrad seems tech savvy, but my perception of them is that half the stories there could easily have started life as notes with pencil and paper and then been composed on a trusty Underwood typewriters.

I don't think it's left vs. right in this case as much as it's pixels vs. ink. :-)

Chris: "We are, but what about that time I found you naked with a bowl of jell-o?"
    Kent: "You did not."
    Chris: "This is true."
Kent: "I was hot and I was hungry, okay?"
