I'm a phone repairman, and have came across that problem before. At the bad section of cable that causes your phone to be out the noise on the line is acting like the old pulse dial. If you have a corded phone you can take the phone off hook and tap the hang up button on the base 4 times real fast, pause tap it once, pause tap it again, and there you just dialed 411 When your phone was out all it had to do was emulate the 9 and the 1s were pretty easy. It is something that has happened before. I have only heard about it 2 or 3 times in the 5 1/2 years working at pac bell -> pac bel/sbc -> sbc ->(soon to be at&t.
So? For probably what they pay for the full Pirated version they get a version that runs like ass? It's simple economics, If a monopoly or oligopoly are charging too much for a product, you're not going to sell enough products, or someone is going to try and re-sale the products at a cheaper rate.
If your wife's work has centrex, she can get a centrex line and be able to just call into the different extensions. There wouldn;t be any extra calls because she could just bounce from extension to extension on her own trunk. It takes away the phone of getting to learn VOIP but her work can pick up the phone bill
