i can tell you they don't "throw out" the bad ones, they sell them to the US government. then overcharge to replace them, using of course more substandard gear
here at the Fed, we're so lazy we even outsource wasting your tax dollars. i'm smiling, are you?
calling slashdot user #007, you have a temporary license to kill (err, smackdown) #2679
but yeah, good call on the end of the world scenario. we _will_ be clubbing up and bashing each others brains out right up to the bitter end. either with nukes (best case, over in a flash) or sticks and stones (worst case, very drawn out, very nasty)
sure, utah has some misguided morality issues - often quite amusing!
but surely this is all about _business_ as usual, about business using monied influence to purchase favorable legislation. i hate to even suggest it but if you look into your own legistature, you just might find similar shenanigans taking place. shocking i know!
and you've done how much testing to prove cell phones are safe in all situations in all aircraft?
or are you saying let's go ahead and try it, what could go wrong?
your horses and cars analogy is so off the mark i wouldn't know where to begin...
and if safety and a bit of peace and quiet makes me a fanatic, so be it. and not being able to live without net connectivity for a few hours doesn't make you a fanatic at all, right?
you're welcome for the ban, although i'm sure no one here had _anything_ to do with the ban
no HTML content, but one can still attach the usual not so secure Microsoft Office docs. Microsoft _is_ the problem here, but as has been a habit of late, the DoD is going after the wrong target
they also block yahoo and google mail - two very safe services
so it's not about security, it's about control and the stoopid people in control
for enterprise apps, SAP is bigger than PeopleSoft in enterprise apps, Oracle a distant, distant third
for the DB side, Oracle has plenty of competition, from mySQL to Microsoft SQL server to IBM's DB2
all of which doesn't have any effect on Oracle's prices
Oracle are doing it because SAP has been eating their lunch globally in the enterprise apps arena, an arena Oracle'd love to play in but have no products (that actually work)
now they have control of PeopleSoft's apps, god bless those PeopleSoft customers
hmm, to choose between a lying pack of useless weasels, or, uhh...
i guess i see your point
but seriously, shouldn't the guys in white coats at Livermore get a fellow-geek vote of confidence when going up against the well-dressed, soulless jackals in Armani suit-coats?
are you pro-SCO?
OBLIG

i _hate_ what passes for an American accent on most Brit TV shows
Mr. Laurie is spot on > 90% of the time, including shifting tone to "dripping sarcasm" and "duhhhh"
talent. genius. scary
the Brits on "The Riches" aren't too bad

1) the DBMS
2) all that other shite
yes the database is complex and syntax can be convoluted. but it works
everything else Oracle does is shite
answer? only use Oracle DB when you have to. just say no to Forms,Reports,Jbuilder^wJdeveloper,crApplicationSe rver,et al
and any business implementing Oracle's business Apps has a death wish
there should be only one...
CPU: 6502
programming language: assembler
OS: CPM
graphical desktop: none
now can we stop whinging about the one true OS / language / GUI??? _real_ programmers need none
i cannot imagine anyone doing enterprise apps for any reason other than profit
this is pure business muck, no fun or glory to be had whatsoever - how many widgets sold, what price, when, to whom, yadda yadda
this is the coding equivalent of changing other people's kids' poopy diapers all day. no fun, no ego boost, just oceans of baby dung
the only way anyone is going to work on enterprise apps is for profit, this is an OSS-proof business
