  1. Bill bet the farm on Gates Nose-Dives at CES · · Score: 5, Interesting

He has to say this sort of thing since he's bet the MS farm on DRM and the like. When you hear people making these kind of references though, you know they are concerned. That tells me the DRM plan isn't going as well as they thought it would.

  2. content creators on Blog Torrent and TiVo for the Internet · · Score: 2, Interesting

I like the fact that they are trying to make p2p easier for content creators. Once this has been done and a quality filtering process has been established...look out TV. I agree that something like this could make a dent in TV. Not overnight, of course, but the impact will be felt over the next few years.

  4. profit centre vs cost centre on The Rise and Rise of IT Administrators · · Score: 1

this thread doesn't seem to get at the real issue, and the author only touches on it. are you a profit centre or a cost centre? most people don't consider this, and it's human nature i guess to think that your view of the world is the most important.

any argument admins can make against developers, developers can in turn make them about their end users in a typical enterprise. the bottom line is that you serve your client as best you can, and eventually you get to the money maker. if a user can't make the widgets because an app doesn't meet their needs, they get frustrated. if a developer can't meet her deadline because she is tied up in admin-related stuff, then they get frustrated. and all of it is counter-productive.

so please, before another admin posts an "i am admin, hear me roar" comment, realize that the servers your company bought are there primarily for getting business done, not to be administered. also, i'm not saying the developer who wrote the article was correct, but he made some good points. it is wrong to undervalue an admin and say they are unskilled, etc, but if business isn't getting done because the policies are too tight (they just seem to get tighter and not looser?!), then there is a problem within that company.

as companies get bigger, it is very difficult to preserve the environment where everyone has the same agenda - to get the company's business done.

I agree that Shirkey makes some good points, but personally I think the biggest stumbling block is getting people to sign up for the Bitpass service. Once a defacto standard emerges and people are used to the idea of spending money in such a way, I think things will gel together. It will take time though.

I think I agree with what you are hinting at. For someone not well versed in Linux, actually configuring and maintaining an installation of software like Ardour is not trivial. There is a business opportunity for someone who wants to build Linux pro audio solutions and I hope somebody takes it and runs with it. As much as musicians bitch about software costs, most of them just want to hit record and let it fly, not spend hours (or days) configuring kernels and config files. In the end, that was why I got a Mac. I'm not saying that it was the only right choice, but it was certainly the right one for me.

I'm hoping that independent artists will use this to broadkast their own stuff, rather than have a bunch of warez channels. The great thing about kast is that it makes it economical for such artists to make their stuff freely available - being popular doesn't mean you pay more for bandwidth anymore. Everyone wins, at least in my opinion. Sure, there will be a lot of shitty channels created and abandoned, but the good ones will rise to the top on their own merits eventually. I believe this really could be revolutionary stuff.
