Pick up something by Larry Niven the author of Ring World. He's got a great collection of short stories out now. I picked it up last year and loved it. It starts with some real old short stories and get into some of his more modern work.
Great read.
Also if your just looking for one quick novel "Ring World" is great.
As taboo as it may be for some guys I lost a lot of weight last year (approx 25 lbs) by using Weight Watchers. They're current Winning Points diet plan helps you learn how to size your meals. You can actually eat anything you want. I was even able to work in 50 cent Cheesburger day at McDonalds into my plan.:-D
The nice thing about it now is that you can do it all on-line. It's cheaper, and you get all the materials, plus there is a palm app that also helps you keep track of things.
The second thing I try to do is get out and do something away from my desk. Go for a walk/run or even just mow your lawn. Something to get your body moving and metabolism going faster.
Those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it (or make things worse).
Actually the American Civil War is a great example for this. The original purpose of the ACW was to defend the rights that the southern/confederate states believed that they had.
Firearm regulation is the same issue. It's not about safety anymore.
I don't require a pistol where I live to protect my home. Crime is low, and the local police are very good.
I don't require a rifle to hunt for food. I have 7 super markets within a 15 minute drive of my house.
I like to shoot clay pigeons and targets though. It's a hobby.
I also have the RIGHT in the United States to own a pistol or rifle. It's not a question of need it's a question of RIGHTS.
Do you need your MP3s, or do you feel that you have a RIGHT to them?
I totally agree with you here. I love playing games just to relax, except for the fact that it means my wife have to be doing different things. So I tried to teach her to play starcraft.
WARNING: If you value your relationship don't force her to play anything she doesn't like right away.
Starcraft was a disaster, however Baulder's Gate 2 and Diablo were both very successful. We are slowly working our way through BG2 right now. I have played myself much farther ahead than we have together, so I can know where the tricky parts are so that she doesn't get frustrated.
I also agree with Heather that you should let her pick some games just for herself. My wife loves SameGnome, and has recently found the joy of JezzBall.
If you learned everything you could about politics in one year of your life then your a better man than I am!
This is the first year I really feel comfortable about voting, and I've been able to for 6 years now. It took most of the time I spent in college for me to begin to develop anything that remotely resembled a decent Mature view of the world.
As for taxes I hate them as much as anyone else, but if you are able to work you should be paying them. It's our suty as citezens of the US to help chip in for the daily runnings of the country.
Frankly - despite cheering for Nader, Bush will win and I have a good reason: Will Farrel does a wicked drunk prez "Dublya" and Dana Carvey could always do a guest spot as "Dad".
I'm glad to see someone else feels this way. After watching SNL Presidential Bash 2000 I got the distinct feeling that It would be a lot more fun to make fun of Bush than Gore.
It's bullshit. His highly paid consultants told him people, for some stupid reason, think a politician is being sincere when they tell idiot stories about "real people"
Oh, and what would you call all of Al Gore's stupid stories?
You need to realize that Both of them are playing the American public. Hell, they are both playing the world. Get past it and consider how they will react in office, and what descisions they will make there.
Personally, the thought of ANY administration similar to the current one just makes me sick. I am voting Bush mainly because I believe in what he stands for, but also because I think Gore's just as bad (If not worse) than Clinton.
It's so easy to register to vote. And I've had to regegister 3 times in the past few years.
It's simple. I go to the DMV to get my change of address card and 2 weeks later they send me my new Voting location. The first time took a whole 5 minutes, because I had to decide to be Independant or Republican.
Also, I can't see anyone calling voting difficult. I got up 10 minutes early and stopped on my way to work to vote for Bush (It's probably get me moderated down here, but Gore's just way to Socialist).
There's no excuse not to vote unless your ignorant of US politics. If you are then I urge you not to vote, but if you have any idea of the current state of the world and the US then get your lazy rear out of bed 10 minutes early and VOTE!
My business partner and I wanted to help out OCCVS. In fact the company that services my Merchant account were willing to help get me specs to write in additional protocols.
I wrote to the developers weeks ago and never heard back. Then the other day everything just disappeared.
Too bad the reason I went back was to to DL the source to work on it myself. I guess I might never get it now. If anyone has a mirror of it could they possibly post it here?
Even with it's cheesy animation I have to agree that Robotech is still my favorite. The animation is still pretty poor, but the story has lasted for me. I can still enjoy reading those Jack McKinney books over again.
I don't know what it is but the way they rolled Macross, Southern Cross and Mospedia together into a kind of multi-generation story was excellent. Especially for something out of the 80's.
Speaking of early 80's anime, anyone remember Tranzor-Z?
I agree with the Previous post. This is almost a Religious issue (Kind of like Which Distribution of Linux/BSD do you like). That said I own a TI-85 AND a HP 48G. The TI was bought in High School a few years ago. I loved that thing. It was programmable (Some type of Hybrid language). Then I was loaned a HP for My Calculus class (required in my district). I bought one for College and use it to this day. The 48G is wonderful although the GX had an expansion slot. It has a sort of Directory structure to it so it's easy to organize personal equations and even Phone numbers and Addresses. Anyway, Which ever you go with It'll do what you need, but if your going into engineering or Science go with the HP.
I'd like to inform you of the current partially beta system of Debian. It's called potato and is available on every debian ftp mirror
This is all well and good and I would definitely run pototo except for one slight problem: How do I get it. The machine I would test on is rather low end (old Laptop) and does not have a high speed connection. I need to be able to Burn Potato to CD and take it home with me. There needs to be some kind of Milestone (A la Mozilla) where iso images are made (every month or two perhaps?) and then I can use pseudo-image initially and just rsync it once a month or DL just the newer packages. If there is something like *please* enlighten me.
I had a Bible class in College (it was required) and I always remember a quote from my prof at times like these. "If they were to make a movie of the entire Bible It would be the bloodiest and sexiest movie ever." Now granted he used this to get out attention but, having since read these parts he pointed out I have to agree. For those of you who have never read (either by choice or forcibly) the Bible let me hit some highlights.
1) David, The most respected Jewish King Takes a married woman he saw Bathing on her roof gets her pregnant and then has her Husband Killed.
2) David's son had over 500 wives.
3) There is plenty on slaughter and sacrifice and sex all over the place.
4) One of the prophets married a Prostitute who went out to work every evening.
5) And Song of Solomon is the biggest Love poem ever written.
Now don't get me wrong. I'm not saying you should have multiple spouses or be a hooker, and this isn't the only stuff in the Bible, but The Bible isn't this huge book filled with only pacifist thoughts. It tells of many things. Much of the Old Testament is about War and oppression. And how can we forget the REAL war in Heaven where Michael the Archangel banished the demons.
I think the next time a/. writer does a story on something like this they should know something about the basis (the Bible in this case), Have PLAYED the game in question (which Katz says he hasn't), or at least be respectful of the subject matter (Christianity/Religion). It is articles like these that make me believe the Mr. Katz really has no interest in making sense just seeing his own words on Slashdot.
Oh, and by the way I LOVE Quake. I AM Christian. I DO go to Church. And I sure would buy a game that had a sword-wielding angel slaying demons. As long as it plays well.
I recently began to set up a test CVS server at work as the Versioning software that we have been using is basically only good for getting a diff. I would recommend going and getting Jim Blandy's notes for a CVS course. Which I believe are available from the cyclic web site. This gives a real brief sketch look into how to use CVS. I feel this is extremly helpful for setting up a server. Once I began to understand that it was much easier. After that I would get the CVS doc by from Per Cederqvist et al. Also from the cyclic site. this is rather large about 115 pages so don't even think about printing it all at once. No one at work will like you. But there are several sections (the HTML version has a good TOC) that go over the procedures and ways to set it up.
Finally I went out and got the WinCVS documentation. Although any GUI would do. This way you show other people the easy ways to access your repository.
Funny that I'll stoop and reply to this, but here goes. Give me some examples of how the RC Priesthood used it's power to kill, tourture any more than certain protestant ministers in the early Americas did. Some wouldn't even let you into their churches if they didn't know you. What about the Salem which trials? Yes I agree that many Catholics today would have been considered herritics a few centuries ago, they should be today. The RC Church (as well as the other Catholic Rites) have set very clear lines of what you must believe to belong. You can still attend but you do not belong. It's like a town council meeting. Anyone can show up and listen and you can even take part and voice your opinion. But you still aren't a council member and maybe your from the next town over so then you don't belong at all. Oh, and just to set a few things straight that I know have been posted to/. before you seem to have missed. 1) Catholics have never been forbidden to read the BIBLE. Yes, it was chained to the Pulpit in many churches. This was to prevent to theft! And yes there was a list of books that the good Catholic was not to read. And yes CERTAIN translations of the Bible appeared on there. That's because someone else felt the need to edit and remove or add (yes Martin Luther did add the word alone to Romans) things from the book that The RC Church compiled in the 3rd century. Check your history. What would you have done had someone edited the book you compiled without giving credit. 2) As far as unorthodox practices go. Just remember that Martin Luther Prayed the Rosary. Now whle this seems meaninless to some calvinists. Most Protestants (even those who call themselvs just Christians are Protestant. If your not Catholic your Protestant. It's a black and White line.) should take this to heart. Martin Luther the man who led the the Protest (hence- PROTESTant) was all in favor of vernerating (not worshipping) Mary.
Maybe all the people who think the RC Church is bad and has twisted things around should look at history and see what the people they look up to thought. Maybe they'll find the we Catholics and Protestants have a little more in common than you thought.
I must say as someone with a degree in Physics and an admiration of Galileo as well as being a Christian I find this comment refreshing. However I do disagree with the last few comments.
What Galileo knew (and many today apparently do not) is that God and the hierarchy of the Church often have very little to do with each other!
Galileo believed in God, definitely, and he understood that shortcomings of those in power in the Church. However as this author has stated this did not invalidate Christianity nor did it invalidate Organized religion or the Roman Catholic Church. Galileo was not a timid man. Several times in his life he went against the will of those who were in power. Why did he stop at the end of his life? Was he afraid, I doubt it. He probably finally decided to submit unto the will of those above him.
Galileo, probably understood those words of Jesus better than those around him and as well or better than many today. When Christ said "You are Petros (Latin male: Peter, stone - a name only used for religious purposes) and upon this petra (Latin female: Rock) I will build my church" and that Christ gave Peter the keys to heaven and the authority that "... what you bind on earth will be bound in Heaven." Galileo understood that this setup an organizational structure to religion. It put Peter as the head of the Apostles and later what became informally know as pope(translated: papa). And he knew that "The gates of hell shall never prevail against her( the Church )". This has always meant that evil will have power inside the Church and her beliefs. And no Pope has ever been able to sway to evil the beliefs of the Church. However this says nothing about the outside world. (Those who believe that that the phrase "Separation of Church and State" actually appears in the U.S. constitution should just quit reading now.) Faith has it's place in everyday life including science. Infact one can not truly appreciate the physical world without keeping that in mind. ( credit given to my College Physics Professor for that ) However the Church can not decree what is science, something many religious leader both Catholic and Protestant have forgotten. It is the duty of the scientists to discover the hidden mysteries of the Universe. This is all the more satisfying when they achieve this in light of faith, and with the support of their religious leaders.
Yes Religion ( and life ) without Jesus is like Beer without alcohol, but religion without structure is like a night out drinking without structure. Beer after liquor never sicker, liquor after beer your in the clear!
Don't forget that some of us are required to use windows for our jobs. I have an old pentium in my office that is a great Linux server. But my primary PC unfortunately has to run Winbloze. A lot of my co-workers as well as the system admin might be willing to try this if they could just "open a Linux Window" and play with the shell and XFree a little. Then once they've learned the basics I'll finally be able to move some development servers to Linux.
Anything that makes Linux easier to learn is good. Although That's the key, to LEARN it.

People fear what they don't understand. That is plainly eveident. I Have not only been into one of these reactors but spent my years in college studying Physics. When I saw a demo of the reactor I was at shut down it was a matter of 1 to 2 seconds. I am surprised I havn't heard much mention of this before but, I do agree that the way to get people to even think about switching is to give them the chance to do it at their own pace. I am the admin for the only Linux machine in an NT environment at the small company I work for. I would like to get at least the other progrmmers in the habit of using some of the tools on this machine but I need a decent X server for windows and the comercial ones are just too expensive to justify right now. Has anyone thought about or even started a possible port of X to win32 that would be GPL'ed? I would be interested in not only using this but devel as well. I think this would be a good start to get people comfortable with a better GUI.
