450 out of the literally thousands of protestant churches in the USA? How is this significant? I'm sure there are that many that support abortion too, but there are far more Christian churches that oppose both abortion and evolution.
I am a Christian. I believe that the world was created in 6 days. I believe that Jesus Christ was born of a virgin, and he lived a sinless life. He died on the cross at Calvary to save us from our sins. Part of the reason I believe as I do is that I can see the complexity and the order in the world around me, and I cannot force myself to accept that it was all by mere chance, as the evolutionary theory would have me believe.
I also have absolutely no problem with people that want to say what they believe. Voltaire once said: "I may disagree with everything you say, but I would fight to the death to defend your right to say it."
The problem that I see most often here on Slashdot is the people that simply say things like 'you're an idiot if you don't believe ______' every time a controversial subject arises (and yes, to those of you that would argue otherwise, this is a controversial subject, or it wouldn't have made it to the front page of Slashdot, and we wouldn't be sitting here on our duffs typing responses back and forth).
Another problem that I see is that people refuse to believe that scientific data is interpretative (i.e., it's not easy [if it's possible at all] to prove what caused _____). The Christian scientist first accepts what he believes about the Bible, and then interprets the scientific data in one way. This is not unusual, however, as the evolutionary scientist accepts what he believes from the teachings of Darwin first, and then interprets the scientific data in another way.
Finally, it irritates me that people see and hear the ramblings of Pat Robertson, and claim that he is the representative of the entire Fundamentalist movement. This fact can also be seen in other sects of Christianity. Take the Catholic church for example: the vadican has made it clear in recent years that it does not see evolution and Catholicism to be mutually exclusive. However, many of the Catholics that I have spoken to disagree whole-heartedly.
Who says that all the software used on this device is open-source? The only thing that it says is that it's Linux-powered (which means that it runs on the Linux kernel). It's entirely possible, that all the software used on this device, save the Kernel, is closed source in nature. And then, the Gov't wouldn't be bound to release any source changes to the non-kernel software on it.
But, even if they do make changes to the kernel, I suspect they have some way of getting around the license.
Some binary RPMs just showed up on the download page. They weren't there last night when the beta first became available. Looks like they have them for Redhat9 through Fedora4. Sadly, they don't have any Debs up there for Debian/Ubuntu...
I just downloaded and compiled the beta, but I was a little disappointed. Wasn't this version was supposed to have some support for Google Talk? At least, that's the impression I got from this post .
My George Foreman grill gave out the other night, so I popped out the 360 so I could fry up an egg!
So, I guess the tri-core PPC would explain why it cooked so fast.:D
The bleeding edge version seems to be unavailable for the moment. Also, if you want a free copy for being an FOSS developer, they limit you in the EULA for Open Source Projects to only one project. Now, I haven't checked to see if it was possible to use it with more than one, but they do not allow it in the license.
I'm sure when Rhapsody (the Pre-OSX betas just after the NeXT takeover) was being developed, that some of the same types of incompatibilities were there.
Think about it though, most apps from 10.3 don't work properly in 10.2, but that doesn't mean it's apple's way of keeping pirates away. Since all these X86 versions are beta quality anyway, they're probably working on a much faster development mode, and things break easier.
Then again, they could be doing it on purpose, in which case they have the right, since it's their OS.;)
You're right that ASUS boards have been known to have the ability to overclock. But the point is, that they have never been set to overclock out of the box (you had to intentionally bump up the FSB). The board they show here overclocks whether you ask it to or not.
The Ultimate Boot CD: It's basically a compilation of different boot disks, all put in a nice menu system on a freely-downloadable ISO image. While it's not really Linux (though it contains a number of Linux-based boot disks), it is one of the best utility CD's that I've ever encountered for testing hardware.
Also, Knoppix is another one that I would suggest, though I use it more for data recovery these days.;)
I think this should be categorized: Their Rights Online.
And, before I get flamed for being a typical American who thinks that everything revolves around him, let me refer you to the FAQ where CmdrTaco clearly states that 'Slashdot is run by Americans' and that 'the vast majority of our readership is in the U.S.' and therefore, most of the stories are US-centric.
But back to the topic at hand, I'm trying to figure out how this kind of a 'Microsoft is evil' story got onto Microsoft's own news site...
maybe someone at Palm will admit to the noisy screen problem on the Tungsten E (http://www.genstart.dk/log/justblog.asp?justblog= 839). I've had my TE for about 2 years, and that is the only thing that has annoyed me about it (well, that, and I haven't found a Linux that runs on it;) ).
Yeah, I was seeing the same thing for several minutes. Then, it seemed to come back, partially. That is, google.com itself worked, but all of the second level domain names were down (gmail.google.com, froogle.google.com, news.google.com, etc.).
Anyway, this is a moment in history folks, that will live in infamy....
I was reading this post, and I got to thinking about a comparison that Linspire had put up on one of their sites (then called linuxshootout.com; now called tryoutlinux.com). It was pretty bogus then. Anyway, I tried to go there, and got forwarded to the URL listed above.
It's interesting how they claim that they are the most popular version of Linux for desktop computers. Yes, you heard me right.....Head on over to tryoutlinux.com, and check out point number 5 under the 'Why Linux' section.
That's why it makes more sense to believe that God created the universe, rather than it exploding into existance.
Some are going to argue: "Where did God come from?" I counter that with a question about the big bang theory: "Where did the 'singularity' that exploded into the entire universe come from?"
I simply keep in mind that the observed universe is too orderly to have come to be from a giant 'boom.'

I was really referring to the voice capabilities of Google Talk...

If this is just an organization and editing program, then how is this any different than iPhoto?

From what I've read, it's great for a drop-in firewall, and it's on a live cd. ;)

I don't have any way of verifying that these are real, but I'm getting them right now.

that would be a deb. And, apt-get works wonderfully on debian for updating packages.
. . . here. Notice this slashdot article is the first referenced. ;)

Since when was WMV a music format? I believe they mean WMA. That is, unless the phone plays videos as well (which wouldn't be suprising).
