  1. that's what I do :) on Building Distributable Linux Binaries? · · Score: 1
As an odd suggestion: why not build all your code into objects and distribute those with a little script to link them on the client machine into an executable.
That's exactly what I already do, actually :) It works on about 90% of the Linux machines it has been tested on, but I want that last 10%!
  2. Re:Mundane SF = Modern Novel? on Is Science Fiction the Opiate of the Geek Masses? · · Score: 1

What you describe sounds good, but I'd say it's still speculation.

Afterall, we don't know much for certain... humans may die if we travel beyond the moon. (Perhaps the magnetosphere is shielding us from something we don't know about?) All of the stars we observe in the sky may be dead. (Perhaps the light is reaching us much more slowly than we realize.) etc.

Yes, these things are implausible, but until we've actually done something, we can never be certain that it's possible. I'm only being a nitpicky hardass here because that's what I believe these "mundane SF" proponents are doing themselves :)

  3. Mundane SF = Modern Novel? on Is Science Fiction the Opiate of the Geek Masses? · · Score: 4, Insightful

If you base your "SF" novel on currently accepted science only, then how can you do anything other than create a plot set in the present day? You can't know what "accepted" science will be like in the future... if you try to guess, you'll find yourself back in "standard" SF again.

Yes, FTL travel is far-fetched, but it's no less a fantasy than any other science-based predictions an author might make.

I recently bought an iMac G5, tried AppleWorks.

Yeah, if you intend to do more than a small amount of word processing, you should look into getting Pages. It's far superior to the infuriating AppleWorks!

And it sure beats having to switch back to the old Windows box just to type up something.

  5. Re:The Numbers Game: on Apple Making a Spreadsheet? · · Score: 4, Insightful

Also, wasn't there an Apple spreadsheet program previously...called 'grid' or something?

True, but before "Pages" there was the ugly beast called "AppleWorks"... which clearly couldn't compete with MS Word.

I think they're trying to cover their asses in case Microsoft pulls the MS Office rug out from under them.

  16. Statute of limitation on patent infringement suits on How to Fix U.S. Patents · · Score: 2, Informative

One of the major problem with patents (in my mind) is the fact that patent holders are permitted to sit on their patents and do nothing, even when they are aware of infringing acts. Then, 10 years down the road, they spring out of nowhere with the infringement suit. This is what Unisys did with GIFs. Unisys allowed the web to become addicted to GIFs, without filing any suits. No, no... they bided their time! Wait until everyone is dependent on GIFs, THEN spring the trap; that's the key! I find this behavior to be underhanded and repugnant. UNISYS HAD TO KNOW! As if they were not aware that GIF was the image format of choice on the web. It's impossible.
