  1. Ryzom on MMORPG Circle of Life · · Score: 2, Interesting
I played Ryzom back in the early beta days, and it was great fun even back then. The problem, I found, was that it was a bit needlessly complicated. Specifically, the skill system was kind of cumbersome.

There were rumours back then of a Linux client coming out for SoR as well, though I haven't heard much news about it since. Does anyone else know more?

  2. Re:Copy Protection in Canada though BUT WHY? on Beastie Boys Respond to DRM Claims · · Score: 1
    It's actually worse than that.

In Canada, we have the legal right to make a copy of a CD for our own personal use, regardless of where the original came from. If we actually own a CD and seek to make a copy for ourselves, we're completely within our rights, and actually pay a tarriff on blank audio media of all varieties to help compensate the artists for this right.

I don't know if the Americans have a similar right, but since they're getting the uncrippled CD, that hardly seems to matter. The point is, in a country where we actually have the legislated RIGHT to copy the CD, the publisher is attempting to prevent us from doing so.

You can bet that EMI Canada is still taking their piece of the tarriff pie though.

So, basically, we're paying for a right that is being taken away from us by the very people who benefit from that payment.

This is why I don't buy "Copy Protected" CDs, even though it's pretty simple to circumvent that "protection". I was actually going to buy this particular album before I noticed the sticker.

  3. Imagine the possibilities... on Invisible Cloaks, Translucent Walls · · Score: 1

Invisibility is only the beginning with technology like this. Optical camouflage could just as easily be used to make something insignificant appear fantastic, or the very significant to appear innocuous. Organized crime, the military, just about anyone with an interest in concealment or misdirection would have a huge interest in something like that.

  4. Nickel and Dime... on On Retailers And Videogame Pricing · · Score: 1
I generally have to keep a pretty close eye on pricing of PC games, as I run the computer department of an electronics store with a "lowest price" guarantee. Generally, most titles are all within a buck or so of each other when I actively compare. Some stores will undercut by as little as a nickel.

Where the big differences come in is when the big box stores use a title as a loss leader to get people into their store/website, or when they work out some kind of deal with a publisher for a bargain price, or even exclusivity for the whole title.

  5. Re:I disagree on Best PDA To Read e-Texts On? · · Score: 1
I use my Sony Clie PEGSJ30 to read e-texts while I'm on the shitter. I need to recharge it every 10 days or so. While I might not spend a full 4 hours on the pot in a 10 day period (that'd be 24 minutes per day), I also (*gasp*) use it as an organizer DAILY. I'm a salesman, and it's an essential piece of equipment for me now.

I'm pretty sure it's rated for 8 hours of actual usage, with the backlight turned on. Turning it off makes the damn thing nigh-unreadable, but you get a lot more juice out of it.

  6. Ringworld Adventure Game? on Scifi Channel to Make Ringworld Miniseries · · Score: 1

Has anyone else played the Ringworld PC game? It was one of those graphical adventure games, like the King's Quest series. I remember having picked it up in one of those shovelware 10 game boxes years and years ago. I've never read the books, but the game was quite entertaining.

  7. Re:Loki a Norse God? on LGP brings back Loki, Kind Of · · Score: 1
He was technically a giant - the giants as you should know were the Aesirs nemises

Not really. Yes, there are many tales of conflicts between the Aesir (especially Thor) and the Jotunar (giants), but they weren't always at one another's throats. The simplistic way to explain it would be that they are of the same species, just different tribes. There are many accounts of Aesir taking a Jotun bride, or adopting a Jotun into their family (as was the case with Loki).

even though he mingled with the gods in Asgard

He was Odin's blood-brother, so it was a little more than mingling.

being responsible for the greatest betrayal* in the entire mythology and all that

    * the slaying of Balder

As someone who has a great passion for Norse mythology, I've gotta say that this is a bit simplistic. Loki did not kill Balder, that was Hodr. Loki contributed to his death maliciously, but I would say he did it out of vengeance more than anything else. But then, /. isn't really the place for deep discussion of mythology and religion. :)

  8. Saved Games! on Are Modern Games Too Easy? · · Score: 4, Interesting

If there's one thing that makes a game seem much easier, it's the ability to save your progress frequently. For me, it was never the individual challenges presented in a game that made it thoroughly difficult. What presented the real challenge was playing a near-flawless game up until those challenges, and then passing them without a crash and burn scenario. It's a matter of mounting pressure and exhiliration - frustration and glee. Having the ability to save your game eliminates the need to repeatedly have the near-flawless run - once you've done it once, you can just reload from that point and carry on. It also takes all of the pressure off. If you feel like you're too far into it, you can set the game down, dry your palms and come back in a couple hours without losing any of your progress. I still thoroughly enjoy the old twitchy pulse-pounder style of game, but I've also learned to love the modern start and stop style. *shrug*
