    Uses about 20MB... so what? Linux has better memory management and caching algorithms, still runs great with 32MB RAM.

    How's Win2000 with 32MB?

    Actually, I find X with a simple window manager to be much more responsive than Win98 on my P166 with 32MB and Matrox Millenium II... unless it's doing something really processor intensive in which case the OS doesn't give the GUI higher priority like Windows does.

    Of course the Millenium II drivers are very optimized, YMMV.

    To me it's much more important that linux doesn't crash or thrash the drives for no reason and that I can script anything that I need to do on a regular basis.

    But I'm an old school Unix hack who just uses X to hold up a bunch of terms and Netscape. I don't use DE's like gnome or kde which may being slowing you down.

    I went to UW Madison, my impression was that people were a lot more into beer and punk rock bands in dirty basements than sports.

    Of course, that was probably just the people I hung out with... God I miss those days.

    The last few versions of rxvt have "transparency" support. You may have to compile your own version if your distro doesn't compile it with that option...

    Heh. Right.

    I'll tell you what's not cost effective: crash-happy, virus-toting, document-self-destructing, upgrade-cycle-locking Microsoft Office.

    I consider it the height of irresponsibility for an IT director to "standardize" on Windows. That's a lot of company profits flowing straight to Redmond or into the shitter due to lost productivity.

    I should know I have to support that crap every day. What a sorry excuse for professional software.

    How about a fast-paced game of tag or hide-and-seek? The characters could be very athletic with cool levels to do gymnastic moves and dodges on (high-dives to underwater hiding places, nets and tightropes, cliffs to climb, etc.)

    Or instead of tag, a race to collect the most "coins" or whatever, with ways to "trip" your opponent or mess up his path by cutting a rope bridge, etc.

    Can't beat money as a motivation, mate...

    What about sex? Many people gladly trade money for sex =^). Or a threat to your health / life? That's probably a superior motivation.

    Money is not the supreme motivator. A cow orker of mine just gave up a much higher paying job so he could have more time with his daughter. I would do the same for my son. Unfortunately there are too many people who live for money and that's just sad, not an argument for draconian laws.

    You can't make people money by watching their TV channel... unless maybe you've got one of those Nielsen devices on your TV. The advertisers pay them in hopes of getting a return. There's no way to calculably measure how many people are influenced by a particular commercial.

    I'm with you, man. I am dumbfounded at the hostility displayed here on Slashdot to a man that has done more than any other person on the planet to bring us these wonderful Free Linux systems (including Linus, there's a bit more to your average distro than just /vmlinuz).

    I just don't get it... it's truly sad.
