    I currently use a USB smart card reader for software development. While this is possible, I really DO NOT want to have to haul this reader everywhere I need to use my laptop.

    IMHO this is not a better option.

    Obviously, this type of copy protection can be used as lease license protection required to enable .NET software leasing. After all, why sell the computer software with pirating being a possibility? You can make people pay to use it, without actually owning anything!

    Is this why they don't really care about the hard drive access controls that have been described on /. lately?

    Obviously the reboot will require somewhat ER type operations. A computer that runs on power is rebooted by removing power. A computer that doesn't use power is rebooted by adding power.

    1. Squirt conductive gell on your paddles
    2. Rub together
    3. Yell "Clear!"
    4. Put paddles on the 'Reboot Terminals' (tm)
    5. Shock that computer into the boot loading state...

    Note: Multiple shocks may be required.

    I am not just talking about the Server market. How many desktop PCs at your office use Intel microprocessors? How many use AMD?

    If I was unsure of using AMD on not as mission critical applications, such as desktops, why would I even think of trying AMD on a server when it becomes available. My point is the rut that a business can get into where the benefits have to be much higher than would logically require a change. If there was a way to reduce that rut, all new and better technologies would benefit. I don't know if it is more based on the human fear of change or the risk factor.

    Unfortunately it seems like businesses treat Intel and AMD like Microsoft and Open Source. Will this help change anything?

    I'm also interested in this, but I never knew it until you brought it up. It would be very easy for the users to setup a mail filter to move all subjects with '[SPAM]' in the subject to dev/null. It seems that inserting it into the subject line would be much more compatible to all mail readers than custom headers.

    I have started using the Twiddler while riding my recumbent bike. It is still slower for me than QWERTY, but I can easily type without looking and by using a single hand. I will use this to type during boring sections of my ride across the US, May-July 2002.

    The Twiddler has to be much easier to learn than the wierd pair of typing spheres in this article.

    You can get the same effect if you want into Circuit City, Office Depot, or other simillar stores and ask questions about computers.

    This is possible, I believe, with the TrgPro version of the Palm. It uses a Compact Flash port for various accessories, leaving the serial port available for use with the keyboard. Using the CF modem or network adaptor with a keyboard should fit your bill.

    How about something as small as both of these that you can use while walking down the street. The twiddler is a one handed chorded keyboard the only requires one had.

    There is currently a happy hacking cradle which allows the use of PS/2 keyboards with the palm. I hope someone makes a springboard module to use a PS/2 keyboard with the Handspring Visor, before I have to make it myself...

    Granted, that is a possible solution. However, having a box just for this is not worth it. That is why I don't own a Tivo. If they supported Ethernet out fo the box, or with add ons, I would buy one tomorrow.

    I do not have a phone line at home. I only use a Cell phone and Cable modem. This is how many more single working professionals are living. Why is it that "connected" appliance developer can't support ethernet (with possible additional hardware purchase obviously) right out of the box? Hello?!?!

    Kudos, cool hack! Now I can get a Tivo...

    XML and Web Services are the Enterprise Application Integrators God send. We have implemented our own version of a SOAP like system that will be converted to the SOAP standard, when finalized. Everyone hawks on M$ because of their platform dependance issues. However, SOAP is a formatting standard for XML packets to implement remote functions. You can (and we are) implementing this on various Unix boxes, main frames, as well as Win Nt and Win 2k boxes.

    Eliminate the Spagetti Code associated with EAI implementation. Web Services, here we come. The world is much nicer. Want to use the Barnes and Noble book engine inside your site to offer book sales to your customers? They will order it from your site, but the backend will be Barnes and Noble. It only makes the web more integrated and rewarding.

    Seriously, the problem is the society has lost touch with the ideals that teach us to challenge and buck authority, be it printed media or government. While we may be literate, we do not read books anymore.

    The conglomeration of cultures has created a void were the morals and civics are learned from listening to an airhead on the evening news. Those that are raised with some culture or morals or responsibility to their actions do not fall prey to these ignorant ramblings.

    The peole who are the predators of this new media are those who pay lipservice to this political correctness and anti-culturalism, but do not live that way. Question. Reason. THINK.
