Well, I'm not going to argue that it's a stupid buzzword, but did you actually try watching the videos? There is some Flash on the pages, but the videos themselves are available as hi- and low-res embedded MOVs and WMVs. Plus, the RSS feed has M4V enclosures... so, stupid buzzwords aside, that would appear to meet the definition of a "vodcast"/"video podcast"/video on demand via rss enclosures.

  2. Server logs... on New Round of P2P Lawsuits from Hollywood · · Score: 2, Interesting

BitTorrent clients periodically ping the tracker (announce url) with statistics that include the number of bytes uploaded and downloaded to/from other peers. Standard web server logs would record this data, as it appears in the querystring. So it would be possible to determine from the logs whether a specific IP had downloaded the complete torrent, how much data they had shared, and an estimate of how long they had continued to seed the file.

Absolutely stupid that the admins of these sites kept the logs. Suprnova was possibly the largest torrent site on the web, somebody really dropped the ball.

The ability to search my network shares is probably the only reason I'll use this app, but it's a feature I've been patiently waiting for.

After all... I keep my own drives *reasonably* well organized, and know where to find stuff. But not everyone in the office organizes their files and directories in a manageable fashion.

  4. Re:Indeed, this is the free market at work. on DoubleClick Warns Against Ad-Blocking Browsers · · Score: 1

The web site publishers who do use a little innovation are going to reap the benefits. I think Salon.com is an excellent example. They use a click through model where you view one large, slightly obtrusive ad, and then you have access to the entire site for the rest of the day. And because Salon only has one major sponsor per day, the ads are generally higher quality (that is to say, more tasteful and less annoying) and part of a larger campaign (as opposed to "hit the monkey" style ads). They are also more memorable. I can't remember most of the ads I see in a given day, but I do remember that I saw an Absolut vodka ad on Salon a couple of days ago, because it was a well done ad that I had to spend a few seconds viewing before I clicked through to the content.

To address your second point, people expect innovation on the web because it is still in its infancy... new developments are made every day that are pushing the web in new directions. Bakeries and stationary shops have around long enough to have proven models that work, but to expect that a content publisher on the web will be doing business in the same manner ten years from now is a bit rediculous.

There are a lot of small to mid-size companies that are selling their products through Amazon Z-Shops, either to complement their own web store or as their only online presence. I've done the development work for a couple such companies, integrating their backend sales and distribution systems with Amazon's reporting systems.

It's a pretty low overhead way to get their products sold through a major, trusted source. And 50,000 wouldn't surprise me.

The article isn't entirely clear on this point, but it sounds like the band would release the album in it's current, not quite finished state, rather than continue to polish it up.

Which would be unfortunate for the fans and the band, considering how long it's been since they've put an album out.

Probably one of my top 3 favorite extensions. Gives you a lot of control over tabs, saves your last sessions, allows you to reorder tabs, group tabs with the tab they were linked from, and a lot more.

Why pay for a second gmail account? If you've already got one, and you use it often enough, you'll be allowed to invite 3+ people to use the service (and give on to youself -- at another address of course).

Sign up for a couple mailing lists -- that seemed to generate enough usage for me to have accounts to give away three days after I started using gmail.

Ok, but think of it this way:

A site/article about some company/product is posted to Slashdot. You attempt to access it (because of course you always RTFA first), but the site has been /.ed.

So you read the comments on slashdot in an effort to learn more. People are really bashing the company/product/service in question, and you form a pretty negative opinion of it, just based on what others are saying, and without any first-hand knowledge.

You tell yourself that you'll bookmark the site and visit it tomorrow, but you never do... and in the back of your mind, that negative opinion persists.

[I wrote this as a hypothetical situation but as I was writing it I realized this is exactly what happened to me when EV1 announced they were licensing SCO technology. The EV1 message board was inaccessible, and so all I had to go on was "EV1 gave SCO money. EV1 == bad." I still think they were suckers to do it, but at least later when I returned to the EV1 site I saw the president of the company had written a letter explaining his actions.]

Remember, you don't always have to tick off "somebody who actually has national media connexions"... a smart/evil person with an internet connection can do quite a bit of damage.

Beyond that, the AP is basically "out of the box". That's merely stupid -- if accessing your *new* wireless network is as simple as taking out of the box and your laptop starts using it without any configuration from you, why can't you understand it'll be that easy for anyone within radio range?

I was considering this point the other day, because I just set up my own wireless network. I realized that a lot of vendors are packaging an access point and a NIC together as a package deal.

If I was Joe Schmoe, and I purchased one of these kits, it might very well not occur to me that others could access my network.
