Having worked in the construction industry on and off in the past, and being an avid home renovator, I can honestly say that this is a job that more than a few people could, would and do enjoy very much. Where do you get the satisfaction from when you simply hit print to build a home? I would much rather have my own sweat and blood, along with a little creativity, go into a home than simply sit in front of a computer for three weeks and boom, have a home overnight. The same can be said for any work of construction.

One can never truly know pride and victory when one takes challenge out of the equation of life.

Should have checked the dimensions of this little guy before that last post... it is actually pretty small. Would almost fit into even my home theater setup... that is if my wife would only let me have a computer in the living room.....

It would be a refreshing change from the everyday norm to have all of our "Comsumer Electronics" built on an open platform. If someone built a computer that was the size of a slim DVD player, and could be operated using any operating system I wanted, I would jump on it.

But for now at least we still have to put up with either a rather large Media PC, one that doesn't quite fit in with the other components of your home theater I mean, or whatever PoS companies like Sony want to jam down our throats this model year.

So to make a long story short I would like to see a Computer that looks, and feels, like a super slim DVD player, and Runs Linux. Not too much to ask I think, and then I would be able to do as I please with it.

Disclaimer: If something like this actually exists please let me know about it. I have, after all, been living in the middle of nowhere northern BC for about 19 years.

Not that I like the idea of piggybacking on all of the Open Source talent out there in the world, but when faced with the choice of building my computer using Windows or linux I have to choose linux.

I would rather pay to purchase a copy of a linux distro and support an open source cooperative than pay to purchase a liscence for a microsoft product and put another gold toilet in the Gates' House.

If more people felt the same way then maybe, just maybe, we wouldn't have to put up with another IE popup asking us if we want to enhance some random body part......

    Beat that.

I laugh when I hear about people who think that a 20 kilometer shot is a record....

  8. Re:Warning: Bandwidth limited... on Fido Launches New Broadband Wireless Access · · Score: 1

Welcome to the real world. Bandwidth limitations are controlled (or are supposed to be) by the CRTC in the way of Tarrifs they impose on carriers. This prevents big guys (like telus in BC) who own, in alot of cases, the only network in town from charging a wholesale rate of say $100.00 per gig to small ISPs while on the other hand charging absolutely nothing to their own customers.

This is an issue that is gaining more steam and attention from the media, so get used to the idea of bandwidth limitations and paying for over usage. It is illegal for your carrier not to charge you for it, especially in monopoly situations.

PS I realize this is an issue that is not so prevalent in large centers where there are many carriers who all own their own networks, but in small towns there are a great many ISPs going under because of the anti-competative practices of incumbent (read monopolistic) carriers.

Now if only they could make a car that looked good, and GET THE CONSUMERS TO GIVE A SHIT, they would be on to something.
