  1. What else has changed in the last 30 years? on Crime Reduction Linked To Lead-Free Gasoline · · Score: 1

This smacks of the same great scientific thinking as "Decrease in Pirates Cause Global Warming." There are so many other factors that would show a similar upward/downward trend as crime over such a long time period. For example, a decrease in the quality of writing in Simpsons episodes has matched a decrease in the violent crime rate.

"lack of a Debian release is becoming a critical problem"

I think at this point it's safe to say this isn't a bug, but rather a feature.

"Debian users take pride in the fact that their distribution is always several releases behind the latest version of the kernel, but makes up for that by being more difficult to install and use."
    From here.

  5. In a word... on If Windows Came to PPC, Would You Switch? · · Score: 5, Insightful

No. OS X is a great OS and I choose to run it in my PPC hardware (Powerbook). It fits my needs perfectly. I choose to run Windows on my gaming system (AMD CPU) and Linux on my servers. I don't see any advantage to running Windows on PPC hardware. I think the performance gain would be minimal to nonexistant over x86 with Windows, and the initial invest in hardware would be much more costly. I choose my OS based on my needs for that particular system. The platform it runs on is incidental.

  6. Re:Why is cloning controversial? on Harvard to Clone Human Embryos? · · Score: 1

I don't think the problem (in this example) is cloning, but rather creating human life (albiet tiny life that may or may not have a "soul" depending on who you ask) simply to experiment on it and then destroy it. It's a big moral question. And for the record, stem cell research is not some panacea. It will be decades before stem cell research could yeild any real world results. I think this link sums it up nicely.

  7. Patents...bah, worry about Trademarks. on IP's Next Big Wave - Taste & Smell Patents · · Score: 5, Insightful

The patenting of smells doesn't worry me so much since patents expire quickly (14 years IIRC). Trademarks on the other hand are perpetual and pose another intellectual property land mine. I'm sure we are all familiar with the International Olympic Committee being totally evil in "protecting" their trademarks. It would be most unfortunate to have Starbucks swing a huge legal hammer at small coffee vendors whose coffee smells similar.

  8. Re:What is even worse... on White House Lied About Iraq Nuclear Programs · · Score: 1

I'm sorry, but I gotta bite.

None of this would have happened? I guess that's true. An evil (yes, let's call a spade a spade) dictator would still be in power, thinking of invading other countries (as he did in 1991), using chemical weapons on his own people, violating the terms of the UN Peace Treaty (that was the result of the first gulf war), and working with terrorists. I'm not saying Iraq helped plan 9/11, but you would have to be a fool to think that Saddam wouldn't gladly give resources and aid to terrorists bent on attacking the USA (and according to the 9/11 report, he did just that).

You can make all the arguements you want about lies leading up to the war or the strategic goodness or badness of the war, but let's not forget who was in the right and who wasn't. Iraq invaded its neighbors in the early 90's, lost a war and agreed to peace terms, then violated 17 of those terms. The world had the right and the responsiblity to smack Iraq down. If you recall, the world did exactly the OPPOSITE to Germany after WWI, and low and behold, we had WWII.

  9. Encryption Circumvention Devices? on Longhorn's Copy Protection Standard · · Score: 5, Insightful

Does this mean that alternate OS's such as Linux and OS X could be consider encryption circumvention devices under the DMCA and upcoming Uber-DMCA's in the USA and around the world? This of course assumes that Microsoft's protection scheme is Windows only. And I think that's a safe bet.

  12. That's Great! on Duke University Giving iPods To 1650 Freshmen · · Score: 1

I've been looking for a good place to go to snag an iPod. I'm tired of trying to pick-pocket ones around Atlanta where the ratio of iPod to non-iPod owners is 1:100. I can just head to Duke for the weekend and lift as many as I can carry!

And if that fails, I'll see about opening up a high-quality headphone sales kiosk next to the Duke Campus!

  13. As I see it.... on Former Windows Chief on Microsoft Vs. Open-Source · · Score: 2, Interesting

I think the bottom line is that Microsoft originally suceeded on it's merits, making (or buying) better software that filled a niche. The problem is that in the last 5 years, Microsoft has been relying on its momentum... Selling products by being the almost the only OEM OS software (barring Mac), bundling software with Windows to lock down a market (IE, Outlook Express, and slowly but surely, Windows Media Player), and resorting to compatability gimics (Office). Microsoft got so big they were able to use their momentum and ignore the software to a large extent. And now with other, better solution such as Firefox, Linux, OpenOffice, etc, Microsoft is starting to slip. They have to go back to doing what got them up there in the first place. After all, that's what Apple did. The lost momentum and were unable to coast on their previous success so they made OS X and focused on design/styling and now the much anticipated "Death of Apple(TM)" seems a long way away.
