  1. Hmm... on Get Ready For the High-tech Beach · · Score: 2, Insightful

The city is looking to replace its ubiquitous but mostly annoying beach tags -- which indicate you paid to get on the beach $5 per day, $10 for a week, or $20 for the whole summer -- with wristbands that contain an RFID chip. Yet another cool feature of the high-tech beach will be the ability to track beachgoers -- an application that is being touted by parents." Hello big brother.

There goes the assertion/urban myth that Linux was proof against virii and such.

Look at the crack, it exploited wu-ftpd. Anyone dumb enough to run that program with pathetic security deserves to be cracked. Run something like ProFTPd if you need FTP, or even better, the Linux port of OpenBSD's FTPd.

Also, use a good distribution (like ROCK Linux). Or at the very least, Mandrake.

You'd think so, but do a search for Full Devil Jacket's song "Monster." Three versions I downloaded had an ad for the encoder at the beginning, and many people had files with the exact size and length, so it got around.

Unless your an idiot, you can secure a Linux box very quickly. Plus, if you have several machines you can just copy the config files.

To make it even easier, why not install OpenBSD? It's secure out of the box.

As for software, why not start coding one yourself, joining others working on a project, or help out Wine?

You guys should also look into Arachne. It's supposed to be available for Linux sometime next month. The DOS version kicks ass, can't wait till I can use it on Linux. It is a very good browser. Fast, stable, html4.0, etc. Also has plugin support with plugins for many types. When it comes to HTML, it's as good as Netscape.

I've tried to compile mozilla with over 800 megs free. After several hours of compiling, I'm down to around 150 and it's still not done. How much space does this thing require? The binaries crash on startup.

I've only been able to keep my linux box up for 7 days. I've been using Linux since '96, and still have not had a single crash. The only reason I haven't been able to keep it up longer is thunderstorms. Also, I turn it off if I go somewhere like prison, err, skool, and work. I need to get myself a UPS.
