As a gay man in the I.T industry, I find this news particularly disturbing. The very fact Microsoft is now retracting it's stance on GLBT rights because of some schizo jesus freak is ludicrious! That's like telling your boss to eat shit and die, expecting to come out of it still gainfully employed. Doesn't work that way. This industry is actually very accepting of gays and lesbians. IBM, SGI, RedHat, Sun, Oracle all provide same-sex benefits and have employee support systems in place for their GLBT employees. In fact, IBM is the #1 supplier of personal computers to GLBT businesses and actively supports the Human Rights Campaign. Apple is another mover and shaker in GLBT rights and was one of the first to provide same-sex benefits (Apple is just a mover and shaker period). To really find out what the the feeling is of the industry, check out the http://www.hrc.org/Template.cfm?Section=Search_the _Database&Template=/CustomSource/WorkNet/srch.cfm& searchtypeid=1&searchSubTypeID=1HRC's equality score card . Microsoft will come ot looking like bigoted fools in this.
Windows will always be overshadowed by UNIX. Always. It's been around longer, it's been maintained and cared for all these years. What makes Linux great is I and every person who uses it actually owns a piece of it. As far as the OSS community is concerned this is the not only our OS, but the world's OS. We take pride in what we create, we want people to use it, and we want feedback from our users. We take ownership and pride in what we create. Hard work and sweat given away for free. Because undivided accessibility is important. So I pose - where's Microsoft's sense of pride? Where's your community?

I'm sick of getting marketing material that uses cliche terms such as "high availability" or "scalability" or "connectivity". It's all starting to read out like a damned Dr.Seuss book! It's all overpaid, overeducated marketing people who think they are I.T gods because they can fire up solitaire in Windows XP. What happened to the good old days when "high availability" was said "it just fucking works". Why use stupid catch phrases learned at Harvard bussiness school to describe simple concepts. "Total Cost Overall"...christ sakes...just say..."it's cheap". I run the I.T department for the company I work for. Not sure about most people, but who in god's name walks into their bosses office and says "Boss...it has high availability"? Like he cares..."it works surfices". Kill the overpaid, overeducated marketing people with a self-esteem complex!
After my mother's mishap with Windows ME and the Windows directory (she has happy fingers when it comes to deleting things), I encouraged her to upgrade to Windows XP for "added functionality and stability". Truth is...I upgraded her so I could setup group policy on her machine...just to protect the windows dir. She hasn't had a problem since:)
