Wow, I actually just learned about this (ring oscillators and MOSFETS as gates) today in my Electronics I class...Pretty neat!

If you're looking for a good, not-a-Matrix/GITS-ripoff-but-still-Matrix-inspired book, check out Idlewild, by Nick Sagan (son of the famed Carl Sagan). It's a great book, and not at all ripped off. A very great read for fans of the Matrix and such.

  4. Re:So far I have attempted the following: on Abused, But Working Hardware Stories? · · Score: 1

I did something similar the other day:

A few friends had come over while I was in the middle of a hard drive addition. My main PC was ok, so I just booted it up so one of my friends could get some information online. I continued with my work, not realizing that the PC was still on, and as I plugged in the second hard drive's power connector, the PC just died. Then I remembered that Parallel ATA drives aren't hot-swappable. Sheer stupidity, I know...

And my iPod (2nd gen) has taken quite a few beatings (the entire thing is nicked with scratches), but still keeps going!

Back in high school, I was working on an assignment on my Palm and Stowaway keyboard out on a picnic bench. I had a can of Sprite next to it, which was a bad idea. This girl came over, wondering what I was doing, and as she sat down, she managed to accidentally tip the can over (she plopped her bag on the table) on the Stowaway. Needless to say, I was rather ticked. Though, the keyboard survived, with a thorough wipedown and shake. Never again will I have any drinks remotely near my Palm.

Aye, you don't need to be running an XCode application. My friend and I were running XGrid on our PowerBooks (867 MHz Ti and 1.5 GHz Al), and he was able to write something that would allow us to use our combined power for Blender rendering. It was rather awesome, breaking 2.something GHz on G4 processors.

Mind you, I don't know how he did it, as I am still a code monkey-in-training.

  7. Wireless Signal on Computing Al Fresco? · · Score: 1

Be sure to pick a spot where you'll get a good wireless signal. Because of where my AP is, half my porch is covered, and the other half the signal craps out. Gotta get a repeater... Also, I've found that the more direct of sunlight you're in, the better you'll see if you turn the brightness of your screen up. Of course, YMMV, but I found that this helps.
