Driver issues dont you just hate them but here is a tip
boot the live cd first before installing and check your net connection works out of the box.
With Lucid I found my E620 modem was only recognised as a mass storage device out of the box. After some digging I found the problem and solution it was down to the usb mode switch package that wasn't in the default install.
So back in 9.10 I downloaded the lucid debs (usb mode switch and usb mode switch data) and stored them on the mini sd card in my modem.
Booted into the Lucid live Cd and installed the two packages with gdebi.
with a reinsert of the modem it was detected properly this time and i set up a profile and connected.
happy I had a working solution I did the install to the ssd and repeated the installation of the two debs with gdebi.
So as you see it isn't catch 22 if you figure out a way round the problem.
Of course I had installed lucid to the ssd and had to revert to 9.10 before I found a solution to the modem issue also an E156 modem worked out of the box (it's my unlocked spare). Edimax do a nice usb wifi dongle (with mac drivers too). This works out of the box with ubuntu,
So using alternative hardware is another option.
A third option would have been using the dongle on a desktop system sharing it with my lan (quick and easy connect eth0 to the wan port on a router and your desktop looks like the internet to the rest of your systems).
I have refined this idea using tomato firmware on the router i can redefine the gateway port. So my netbook connects via wifi to the router the router has the lan ip of the netbook as the gateway address (192.168.3.121) the router is fixed at 192.168.3.1 and theres a 2nd router (optional) wirelessly linking to the first extending the range at 192.168.3.2 and also providing a local wired port for my sat box).
Tomato can also do WOL so I can go to the admin page wake up the desired desktop/file/print servers machines via the router use ssh or sshfs to get access to the resources on the desktop and send a halt signal when I'm done to put them back to sleep.
Another neat trick with ubuntu is to use adhoc mode to set up a small lan. I created a local network called "magic" port forwarding from my modem to wifi again, and the end result my little netbook was giving internet access to 2 windows Laptops letting 3 of us get connected on the one dongle (the 2 girls were impressed).
absolutely no reason why you couldn't set up shares and pass whatever files you want to...
Might be able to go one step further and mesh with other netbooks extending the range further...
Ubuntu and linux in general really does let you do more with your hardware and if you dual or triple boot or use virtual machines you can have it all (sometimes at the same time).
Did I mention my instant mac (mac install to a usb hdd plugged into a dock with built in audio and an edimax usb card. in one of the usb ports. Booting from usb with most systems gives you a mac with working sound and network (It's proof of concept only never found a good reason to use OSX other than checking website compatibility ).
the Tienanmen Square incident apparently is widely censored in china, for someone in china downloading video footage and news reports of that seems a valid use of tor.
copyright has nothing to do with it. Maybe a documentary might show a relatively simple way of providing clean drinking water for you or I this would be entertainment to some other people this could be the source of an improved quality of life.
some material would never be of real value such as mickey mouse video's and shouldn't be downloaded using Tor.
The Offence is of exceeding the speed limit not of exceeding the speed limit by a particular amount.
In the UK there is a point system speeding attracts 3 points and after 6 points a novice driver would have to retake his test after 12 points a ban would be imposed due to totting up points are generally active for 3 years and removable after 4.
It doesn't particularly matter how far over the limit you are if being over the limit will attract 3 points each time you do it. Most drivers do break speed limits several times a day its very easy to do so and most of the time you will not get caught the police are not there to see you break the speed limit. Automatic speed camera's only slow you down in the vicinity of the camera which generally you will be aware of certainly the local ones and a number of the camera's on national routes.
Average speed camera's on the other hand work over a period of miles usually with no realistic opportunity to avoid passing the second camera. All traffic slows down, often below the limit especially towards the end of the monitored section as the only way to beat average speed camera's is to slow down or stop. It's also not unknown for the monitored section to get the speed limits reduced from 60 to 50 or less on roads which have had a 60 mph limit for many decades.
I get the point that these camera's are intended for road safety not revenue raising and as i have explained in the uk you get to be caught 4 times in 3 years and banned.
However there are proposals to charge motorists in the uk based on the distance they drive this system would work fairly well for generating a figure for billing.
cockineys are a minority in national terms the accent is based around the east end of London. However I wouldn't claim cockneys to be incapable of being educated. Accents tend to be a regional and class based feature. Certainly accents are used to identify group membership in some communities.
Accents can be gained and lost which I think has to do with social mobility more than anything else. Some people will never adapt their accent preferring to be identified as a Scot for example in England while others will adapt to be more like the peer group they wish to be identified with.
But H dropping tends to belong with cockneys and the lower classes, but that comes from a Northerner not a Londoner who might feel differently. Education seems to moderate the extremes out of peoples accents maybe because universities draw from many area's and the more distinctive accents will tend to be mimicked and made the butt of jokes.
Besides its not a good career move to advertise you grew up on a council estate in Barnsley when your co workers are ex public school boys.
dropping h,s is more dick van dyke / mary poppins attempt at a cockney accent. Maybe some mockneys do it occasionally and some will do it to take the piss out of americans but it tends not to occur in civilised parts of Great Britain. If your educated you wouldn't be dropping h's at all.
I like Led Zeppelin and they have produced a lot of good songs but I think I probably have them all , (ok there will be different recordings of the same songs I don't have).
Thing is there is no new recordings by Led Zeppelin and besides you can't listen to one band all the time or even just a few. So maybe Ratt did make a few banging tunes or not I don't know I never listened to them but its feasible they might have produced something I might enjoy.
Truth is most bands make a few great songs at best and an awful lot of filler. I like great music and that isn't just Led Zeppelin so if you want Led Zeppelin get Led Zeppelin.
If you want great rock music then there are other bands who are not Led Zeppelin with songs you will like (and some that suck)
you misunderstand addiction, just because you have beat an addiction doesn't mean you don't want to indulge it again.
I am cigarette free 9 months and although i choose not to smoke i really would enjoy one.
Opiates are really nice , very mellow and relaxing makes it easy to be close to dying without panicking. To be honest i'd choose to die full of morphine, it really is that good.
if you had written that in your first post i'd have modded you informative.
usually you can get on to bugtrack and let them know they broke the driver for your card and hopefully someone will care enough to fix it.
otherwise you can figure it out ( all the while cursing the unknown idiot who broke it). but hey it beats windows would you have any options there... good luck theres a chance things might get fixed.
Mac's are the only systems that readily run windows , OSX and Linux. Each OS family has its strengths and weaknesses. Windows will give you the better choice of games OSX the simplicity and security and Linux everything else thats worth doing.
For some reason windows laptops seem prone to failure within a year or 3. The Apple systems appear to have decent build quality.
Price seems to be the main barrier to mac adoption. Currently I take windows boxes and put Linux on them. There is no good reason other than price and availability that I don't do this with macs as well.
Smoking while not good for health isn't a dangerous activity whilst driving in fact over all it is probably safer than banning it.
Your smoker driver is more likely to become irritated by smaller things whilst deprived of nicotine. More likely to feel drowsy and fall asleep. More likely to drive faster and less responsibly (in order to get where they are going and make up the time they lose on a cigarette break as well as boredom). smoker is more likely to open the window getting fresh air in the car and increasing alertness.
Even eating isn't the danger you suggest it's not like your cutting up steak while driving but a bit of gum or a boiled sweet will aid concentration and minimise boredom and raise energy levels and alertness.
Typing whilst driving on a tiny phone keyboard has to be taking your eyes away from the road for significant periods of time.
Driving does not need the constant use of two hands, eating and smoking both use one hand from time to time the same as changing gear in a car with a manual gearbox.
In fact if you drive a manual you should be adept at choosing appropriate times to change gear. Smoking and eating while driving are similar skills.
Rapid share isn't that the site which tells you , you have to wait, your already downloading something (or your isp's proxy is) and wouldn't you rather pay us for the free software that you want, or the non free software that you want too.
Now as well as selling access to data files they have no right to, they want to now get a cut from the producers of those files too.
Actually from rapidshares point of view it makes perfect sense why put up with the variable quality of pirated material when you can get the original quality copies from the producers themselves.
These criminals he talks about put stuff on rapidshares servers for free and then rapidshare gets people to pay to download them, who's getting rich of pirated material ?
Far from providing rapidshare with legitimate content, more effort should be put into shutting down rapidshare.
Rapidshare are the kind of pirates that the RIAA and MPIA and such like should be targeting.
the bank would inevitably get a smattering of "the wireless doesn't work on my netbook"
I would be interested to know what netbooks have unsupported wireless cards? Laptops sure there are a few which don't work out of the box but I've yet to see or hear of a netbook that has unsupported wireless.
I wonder what it would take to produce a usb stick with wifi bluetooth audio and bootable media and possibly an extra port. you'd pretty much have a self contained system which would work on anything that can boot from usb.
Makes me wonder if i could boot from my huawei modem that could be quite cute:) I was playing around the other day and had 3 systems accessing the net via my netbook, to have a system set up on the microsd card in the modem card that did that automatically could be quite appealing.
While there is some sillyness in the products you talk about , Hazel nut flavour perhaps has no hazelnut in it and would be safe for your brother. Crisps and nuts and wheat and starch based products tend to be made on the same site tends to use similar equipment. Sometimes even the same equipment. So there is a genuine danger from what you might see as safe products.
Some factories don't use nuts at all so one brand of crisps might be safe for your brother while another brand could kill him. which do you prefer russian roulette or the warning? Chances are there is a standardized industry labeling for nut hazards probably legally mandated which means a packet of probably safe crisps gets the same label as a packet of peanuts.
I looked at some of your links and death by heart disease per 100,000 people doesn't tell you anything about treatment just the incidence and a lot of that is diet and lifestyle.
Dieing within 30 days of a heart attack, well that is determined to a large extent on the length of time between the heart attack occurring and being treated.
Unfortunately I know a bit about this since I had a heart attack last July, first and foremost I did not know I was having a heart attack. All I could say initially was I couldn't seem to get my breath I felt like a small kid does after going flat out in a race. I didn't think it was that serious at that point but I live out in the country and 2 months prior had to call an ambulance for someone and I knew that took 20 minutes to arrive - they died. So I did call an ambulance knowing that it could become more serious.
When I walked over to the ambulance I still thought i was probably wasting their time. It's probably a man thing that quite often we will refuse an ambulance if we think we are ok enough, I've done it before in the past. In the ambulance they immediately began treatment, gave me oxygen and took me quickly to the hospital.
On arrival in hospital an ecg was quickly done and i was told I was having a heart attack. This essentially means a coronary artery was blocked by a blood clot. The coronary arteries provide oxygenated blood to your heart muscle and within 20 to 30 minutes of blood flow being stopped your heart muscle begins to die.
The effected area of muscle doesn't recover it develops scar tissue and isn't as efficient as it was.
After the heart attack and your blood flow has been restored,( a drug like heprin can be used to dissolve the clot and restore flow),procedures like stents or bypass surgery can reduce the likely hood of a further blockage.
So a heart attack doesn't kill you directly or quickly and the rest of your body is functioning normally as the heart continues to pump blood round the body. After the heart attack your heart is damaged and this is where you have a bit of a lottery. If the blockage was in a critical area then a small amount of damage may cause the heart to lose the ability to pump blood, if your lucky and the blockage was in a less critical area then it can take more damage and you can still live.
The first 30 days after a heart attack are the most critical your body is trying to heal the damage and it is the most likely time for it to beat erratically and fail to move blood round your body this unfortunately is critical and you have just a few minutes to be treated.
You could perhaps have a pacemaker fitted this monitors the heart and shocks it when it goes out of wack, however you need to be able to take the surgery which immediately after a heart attack would probably kill you. If you could take the surgery you probably don't need it.
The trouble with a heart attack is its very easy to misunderstand what is happening to you, you might have very small symptoms, pain can be mild to not at all. My heart attack wasn't severe pain by any means i wouldn't have been seeking pain relief, It could be thought to be a stomach upset. It could have been asthma.
Men tend to take their knocks and not complain, you just wouldn't call an ambulance for gut rot or a sore arm. However as I've explained the delay in seeking treatment is critical to your survival.
Funny enough one of the reasons not to call an ambulance even when one really should be needed is there is so few of them and if your in one it means someone else isn't. Men are likely to drive themselves to hospital when they have a heart attack (about 1 in 3). In october I was getting severe chest pains at rest, drove in and found out i had another 98% blockage of another coronary artery (how close to a heart attack).
To increase your chance of survival you need to get treated as fast as possible, while waiting you can chew some asprin up to 300 mg would be useful. I have a nitrate spray which would relax my artery walls possibly letting the blood flow I would use this as well.
Hopefully if you have a heart attack you will survive it. One more statistic 30% of people who have a first heart attack die without ever making it to hospital.
my ole man has an old 286 has windows 3.1 on a 20meg ide hdd and 1 meg of ram used to run word perfect 5.1 and firstchoice a spreadsheet program. Took years to get him off that and he won't sell it since it was so expensive to buy. I bet he never throws it out.
The Farmville and Mafia wars type games are largely time killers that keep the users on on the site. Facebook would be a ghost town without them, people wouldnt return frequently without them.
The grinding is tedious in the extreme farmville is slightly redeemed by the extra crap which is thrown in your general direction, which gets you designing layouts. Guys tend to maximise return while the women make pretty farms.
mafia wars is a battle for energy you never have quite enough. you could speed things up by not making every task keep taking so long but then the point is to keep people on site.
There is a competitive and repetitive element to the games and progress is rewarded when you manage your resources and to be honest when your working a crap job or not working at all perhaps running your farm is the only job satisfaction you have
perhaps thats the real purpose of several hours a day working at facebook games to be a work substitute
Officials were not immediately able to say how the scheme would work. For example, if two households had similar incomes but one had chosen to provide their children with internet access and the other had opted for a newer car, it was not clear how the entitlement would be assessed.
Guess benefit levels have vastly improved in recent years or Officials havent the first idea about surviving on benefits. In the words of Ricky Tomlinson newer car, my arse.
when the keyboard slides out does it need to be attached ? simple wireless or blue tooth keyboard, probably with a built in track pad would be quite nice, make it rechargeable when its docked for extra thinness and keeping it light.
Problem with touch is its not ideal for everything, really. for an ebook reader application i would be happy to be able to turn pages with touch, media player too. Alternatively you could give me a clicky joypad thingmy like my phone has to tab round buttons or links and press to click.
actual fact my phone is quite good that way i can use it as a bluetooth input device for my netbook. With its touch screen as a trackpad and its small but functional keyboard (the screen can be used as a virtual keyboard too) its fairly handy.
The software could be better using it as a terminal rather than just a keyboard/mouse could be interesting but i digress.
I know it wouldn't be quite in keeping with Apple to put a real keyboard on a tablet, however stowing a light weight wireless keyboard makes sense, nobody wants to carry two bits for their laptop, we all know we can attach a keyboard to our laptops and netbooks but who actually bothers.
with ubuntu there is a directory called.thumbnails and in there another one called normal. currently on my netbook there are just under 3000 thumbnails some of which are images i recognise as having viewed them some are images of well known people, some from slashdot , facebook and there are photo's of people i know but have never seen before.
I think theres nothing there to worry about but would hate to think anything in that directory could be used as evidence against me of anything.
How is the Speed Limit sign something you need to pay attention to and have highlighted in red?
First of all most people drive down the same roads regularly and know the speed limits, this system would pretty soon become irritating and a distraction.
The Speed limit for a road is pretty much set by the type of road it is, you really don't need to see a sign to have a good idea of the appropriate speed for a particular road .
Finally the GPS which your almost certain to have, if you have this system, knows how fast you are travelling and the speed limit for the road.
Red is pretty much always used to indicate danger of something critical it's a bad color to use for that sort of information amber might make more sense if you have to highlight this sort of information. I would save red for things in your path or moving into your path - real dangers.
Speed limits are not setting the speed for a road the road conditions are and the driver needs to be able to evaluate the road conditions and drive at an appropriate speed.
If a driver is incapable of determining appropriate speed and evaluating the road conditions then they really shouldn't be driving.
what part of people getting killed don't you understand?

There is a competitive and repetitive element to the games and progress is rewarded when you manage your resources and to be honest when your working a crap job or not working at all perhaps running your farm is the only job satisfaction you have
perhaps thats the real purpose of several hours a day working at facebook games to be a work substitute

was the best I found about it
Officials were not immediately able to say how the scheme would work.

I know it wouldn't be quite in keeping with Apple to put a real keyboard on a tablet, however stowing a light weight wireless keyboard makes sense, nobody wants to carry two bits for their laptop, we all know we can attach a keyboard to our laptops and netbooks but who actually bothers.
with ubuntu there is a directory called .thumbnails and in there another one called normal. currently on my netbook there are just under 3000 thumbnails some of which are images i recognise as having viewed them some are images of well known people, some from slashdot , facebook and there are photo's of people i know but have never seen before.
