I really like the 'admin secure' package, it's what I use in my small 40 seat shop. The central administration part is nice, fully supports AD and can install itself via group policy. It take updates to the admin server and pushes them out from there. It's install packages are great, has a POP3 proxy and can tie right into outlook. It has windows xp, windows server, exchange, lotus, and linux versions... All in all a great package.
It seems to be very easy on a machines resources, and is very unobtrusive (other than the cute little panda guy there even befor login, you hardly know it's running).
It would be nice if there was some sort standard compliance body that had to test/verify/pass such things (like the windows OS, NAS Appliances, Linux, etc) for interoperability and function before it was release (anyone else have a bit of fear over the forthcoming vista release?).
If the whole process was done right this sort of thing would have to kill innovation, as everyone would be able to 'extend' the standard (as long as it didn't break the original functions).
Can't we begin to 'enforce' standards... a sort of ISO-31337 certification of some sort?
Group policy is great... I know for my smallish corporate network at work (25 XP workstations, 12 XP laptops, 2 windows servers and 2 linux servers), I've just completely disabled the SP2 windows firewall with group policy's... As I too see nothing but headache in a firewall on every station. I'm confident that the corporate antivirus solution, and our (linux based) firebox firewall (and my eliquoently crafted rules) are good enough.
And because we use SUS and I've been 'on the ball' we have all been using SP2 for months now with out a problem.
that allow the exlpoits to be installed in the first place, rather than developing a tool to remove the exploits... oh wait they just purchased the software from someone else...
How about a new release of IE that supports CSS properly? I'm tired of having to work around IE's broken box model and such.
If I had three wishes, the first one would be that linux was the gaming platform of choice then I wouldn't have ANY windows boxes...
I remember wanting one of those things SO badly... but as a college kid I could never raise the money for one...
I just remember them doing great full motion video and having all the bells and whistles I wished my PC had at the time.
I was a gamer even way back then, but of course I only has the snes, and SFII gave me and my pals countless hours of fun... I was never *really* impressed with what it could do.
BUT it did give me my love for Zelda... that last even to today.
My ISP blocks ALL port 25 traffic.

Unless it bouces through thier SMTP server.
This baffled me for hours when my deb sever stopped sending my mail. I got NO notification of the change in policy. I assume this was a huge boon for thier tech. support people, I noticed a new entry in thier tech. support FAQ, but I'm assuming a lot of people didn't.
But what I wonder is, what good is this? Thier SMTP doesn't require any authentication, but I assume that a IP is captured and could be used to trace back to my DSL router...
But what I'm afraid of is, that they are actually doing this to monitor the content of my (and the other customers) email.
Anyone elses ISP doing something like this? Anyone in the sysadmin field know of legit reasons for something like this? Does this help stop spammers (My ISP's public explination.)?
I don't personally download movies, I'm too much of a videophile snob to want to watch a low quality rip with bad audio.
But I know many who do, and very often (very very often), if the movie is good they pay for a movie at a theater AND buy the DVD...
So how much are these people *REALLY* hurting the movie makers, possibly they *MAY* have bought a stinker or two by mistake... But in reality seeing a movie on the silver screen and getting the DVDs offers enough incentive to warrent the purchase.
Well if you not smart enough to press windows+d when the boss walks up during your personal time... then perhaps you shouldn't be given a terminal at work.
This seems like it would be nice fodder for some parady site to pick up.
But somehow IBM isn't as sexy as the other person who went out to 'killbill'
But it is ironic that my thinkpad that I commonly use when reading and surfing from bed is commonly called 'my girlfiend' and carries the hostname 'bitch'.
I completely agree that that OS X is the bomb, but as far as I can tell M$ is really playing catchup here.
I remember when gnome and eligtenment where the best you could get for a x desktop... now I think it really is OSX (too bad I can't affor the hardware)... but I am truely amazed at the stretches the KDE desktop has made.
I really think those developeres (KDE) are trying to pre-empt the opposition and be innovative... I *believe* that the whole open source ummm... revolution is making strides into the mainsteam "desktop" hordes... but at the same time keeping to the 'oldskol'.
I'm sure alot of people who learned assembly from typing it in from a 'games' magazine feel the same way.
I *know* I want my desktop to be pretty (and at the same time to keep it interactive... why can't I have my own HTML doing includes to the blogs and news I want as my desktop(In pretty AA 3D))?
and as alway as a paranoid leftist... ANY SOFTWARE THAT IS NOT OPEN SOURCE *CAN NOT* BE TRUSTED..
Because if you'r being truely innovative, the catch up time is long enough to warrent the (LACK OF NEED OF) patents.
2 cents from a drunken geek in WI.
What I can't figure out is why the fsck they are not just doing the who thing in direct-x... why the overlapping APT's. If direct-x already has hardware accelerated 3xAA why are we dicking around with this BS middleware?
Why not just use what is already there, fix it and make it worth it... I know my CPU is 99% idle till I get pissed off enough at the cluesless masses to finally open BF:V and start killing people.
come on window has always been about 'eye candy'... why else would kde and gnome and the like stuggle so hard to be windows like... If you think about it the only real 'inovations' in the desktop enviroment have come from the max OS... AA fonts and the rest, this coming from a person who is completely XP on KDE *should* have at least a little envy and insite.

Perhaps they spent those extra three day discovering how they could apply darwins laws of evolution too it.
OMG now I'm gonna have this stuck in my head for hours.
