Did anyone else find this rebuttal just rambling and boring? He didn't do a lot of rebutting, just yammering all over the map about things only tangentially related to the topic.
Hello...he is a college professor. Did you go to college? College professors never actually say anything useful.
I am not reading the rebuttal. I just picked up a syllabus and I will show up for the exams.
It is not that easy to avoid accidents. My car insurance is $4000 a year. Apparently I am a "high-risk" driver. I tried telling the insurance company it was the other drivers that caused the 4 accidents but they don't believe me. Just because I have 5 speeding tickets doesn't make me a "high-risk" driver. Everyone speeds. If you go the speed limit, people will honk at you in Texas.
I really am a good driver!!!
At least my insurance can't get any higher now. The only way it can get any higher is if I drink and drive or get busted doing illegal street racing.
For an Idea of scale, The last replication project I wrote for an employer propogated over Oracle DB_LINKS via triggers to synchronize a dataset in two cities, log it, and do something with errors. Because this particular system was a Peoplesoft installation, it was a subset of 6800 tables and 15k lines of code give or take some triggers, with NO debugger. OMG, it's like a "finally" moment to have someone even claim to be fixing this soon in their architecture.
If you are trying to sync PeopleSoft instances, PeopleSoft provides OTB tools to natively sync databases using the Integration Broker. Managing the sync of 10 to 20 components is easier than managing the thousands of tables used by the components.
Why the hell not? Is it uncool now? Do I need to stop using it for l33t status?
There are some nice tag libraries, so STOP PUTTING JAVA CODE IN JSPS!
One might argue it is easier to read especially for something simple.
Are you one of those types that spend all thier time critizing other people's code just because it is not how they would code it? I hope I never work with you.
come on anyone who buys a router now gets wifi on it and they leave it open OR you just discover the keys and break in (yeah it takes a while but thats life)
Using an open access point is cool. I leave mine open and people are free to use it. Using a network that has keys on it is uncool. That is criminal because you actually are breaking into a system to use it. It is also stupid because most of closed networks are corporate network that have people monitoring them. There is enough open access points that spending the time breaking into a closed one is a waste of time anyway. I think most people breaking into closed networks do it more for the l33t factor despite being script kiddies.
I can see your point but then I have to ask, who is to blame for the poor usage? Is it the person who is sending the crap to you or is it you that allows that person to send crap to you?
I would like to tell my managers to stop IMing me crap but I would probably get fired. I have 5 managers ala Office Space. When something goes wrong, I have 5 IM windows saying: "Did you not get the memo about the new T.P.S. report?"
This is typical. Person A has a problem where they can't stop using item X. Person A therefore campaigns for the restriction of item X, regardless of the positive results of others, and infringing the rights of all other persons who can actually control themselves.
Infringing on rights? Having IM at work is not a Constitutional right.
That's great when you have a choice of IM. If IM is allowed at work, the managers are going to require me to sign-in everyday. I really don't have a choice when somebody IMs me over stupid crap. None of IM services have a "crap filter". If I turn off my IM my manager will be like "turn on your IM so I can IM you stupid crap all day". There is no way to tell people "don't IM me stupid crap". People don't realize thier crap is stupid.
If corporate policy is to allow IM, the corporations are going to want to be able to IM you. There is never going to be a corporate policy of allowing IM for personal use only. That's like allowing a slacking device on you computer. Corporations should be allowed to block IM if you are not doing it for business use. You are allowing a hole into the network for viruses and you are allowing a huge productivity killer.
Do I miss talking to my friend and family at work? Not really. It is really intrusive to have a pop-up box with some crap when I am trying to get something done. Send me an email and I'll respond to you when I am not in the middle of something.
The mind can only handle so many distractions. Constant interuptions into thoughts actually stresses people out.
A IM free workplace is like working in a quieter room.
I agree. For personal time it is great to talk to friends. For work it is pure hell. A manager with your IM is like having him/her right next to you all the time telling you stupid crap all day long.
When our IT department took away IM, I thought it would decline the my productivity. It actually increased my productivity and I would never want IM back. There were too many annoying IMs from people who can immediately IM you with total crap. They first take some time to look at it themselves now because they have to expend extra effort to get on the phone or send an email.
Having IM is kinda like having everyone at your company working in your cubicle. Anyone can just blurt out some kind of crap without thinking it through.
Try turning off IM for a day and see how much real work can get done.
I am not afraid to compete against an immigrant worker. However a H1B worker isn't competing at the same level. Corporations can treat H1Bs as slaves paying them less and working them to the bone. Any smack from them results in "You wanna get deported?". How am I supposed to compete against a slave? Make them all citizens and we won't have a deflation of wages. If you notice Bill Gates never advocates more immagration. He wants more H1B slaves.
Not sure about a wizard. You just recreate the tables in SQL Server and then create link tables in MS Access. I believe you can rename the link tables to be the same as the old Access tables and everything will work fine.
That's great if it MS Access works for your group. In my experience the greatest disadvantage is that it is a file in a directory. I have made changes to a form in MS Access and the next day it was gone. Turns out that somebody messed up the data so they copied a an old version back to the shared directory. A SQL Server database can provide backup mechanisms and keep somebody from making a "offline" version with them on a trip and then copying the file back. I have changed a MS Access database to use SQL Server tables keeping the MS forms. It was super easy to do and it works well for the group.
MS Access isn't total crap. It is great for data conversion. It's a lot easier to fix a bunch of spreadsheets in Access and move it to a real database like Oracle or DB2. Moving between database types through ODBC is easy and you can clean out rows with a touch of the delete key. There are expensive tools that do the job but why get them when Access does it. Nothing is more painful than dumping to text files and using a tool like Oracle SQL*Loader.
Having said all that I would never use MS Access for a real application.:-)
I actually like the new look. It is 20 times better than the default XP theme. I have to switch every XP work machine to "Classic" because I hate the "Fisher-Price" coloring scheme of XP. Computers should look professional and not like "My First Computer".
Firefox asks me to update when a new version is released but it really just downloads another version. It would be cool if they did something that just updated it self instead of just downloading a new version.
I was going to do this set of reports for this client in Crystal Reports. They initially said "Yes" but changed their minds when they found out they couldn't change the values. The client then asked for the reports to be in an Excel spreadsheet so they could "correct" the values.
I doesn't matter. Most Java these day is at the middleware level running in application servers. Most desktop Java software will install the JRE you need for it in the installer program. Even internet Java applets can install the JRE you need. The JRE installed with Windows would be outdated in two months.
We are going to see the credit card companies squeezing the life out of people who need to declare bankruptcy because of medical emergencies. 75% of bankruptcies are caused by medical illnesses.
The Democrats tried pushing a concession that would limit the interest rate on a credit card to 30%. The Republican's rejected the measure. It is scary to think what credit card companies are going to charge people who fall victims to debt.
I am glad the Bush adminstration is cracking down on people who share CIA files containing information on undercover agents. To danger an agent and an operation working in a foreign land for political retribution is just wrong.
I got suckered into the GameStop card thing and it wasn't worth the discounts because you really need to trade a lot of games to get anything. The magazine kept coming a full year after my subscription lapsed. I guess if you give it away for free you can keep up the subscriber numbers.

Can you point me to an online store selling a legit copy of Walt Disney Pictures' Song of the South?
You can find it on Ebay. It is still sold in Japan. Where do you think the pirated copies on the torrents come from?

No one uses Vector anymore.

At home most of the time my computer is powered off. Kinda hard to hack it that way. :-)

Actually it is already a show on M2 called Video Mods. And yes it is more horrible than you can imagine.

Seriously - how do you get a number like twenty? Would twice as good be enough?
I counted the times I wanted to kill Bill Gates while looking at the interface. I found I had 20 times less homicidal thoughts.
I actually like the new look. It is 20 times better than the default XP theme. I have to switch every XP work machine to "Classic" because I hate the "Fisher-Price" coloring scheme of XP. Computers should look professional and not like "My First Computer".
