The PS3 has been out here in Japan since about Christmas and I have had the chance to take a close look at it. The design of the two levels of machine is, as would be expected, is impecable. Sony did a great job turning a black plastic gaming box into a beautiful, if not white, piece of home entertainment worthy of a place above your top end home theatre setup.
I find the prices for the two levels of units to be a bit high for my taste... the lower level machine coming in at around 70,000 yen and the top unit priced at around 90,000 yen. You get all the bells and whistles on either unit with a slightly larger hard drive on the top end unit.
It appears to me that with these units, Sony is not so much trying to put a gaming machine in every home, they have near done that with the PS1 and PS2, but rather they seem to be trying to redefine the home entertainment idology. Sony creates all the hardware needed for a full home entertainment system, from TV to 5.1 to speakers and now to networked gaming. Add to that their portable devices and their top knotch work in mobile phone tech and all the sony entertainment content provided by sony picture and sony music, and you have a hard time believing that thier last 10 years of positioning has been anything but planned for the future.
Whether Microsoft, or any other company releases a game unit that one day might blow away the PS3 in ability, Sony still commands a huge lead in the interconectivity of "entertainment". They seem to be doing for the whole home entertainment areana what they did with the Sony Walkman... They are defining the vernacular that will become the cornerstone of future entertainment. When, 10 or 20 years from now, someone says, "lets get a home entertainment unit hunny. (HEU;))" it will be like saying, "I am going to buy a new walkman this afternoon.", of course it would make no diference if it were a sony or a panasonic or a sharper image unit... The walkman vernacular was defined and like Q-tips or Jet-Ski the brand name will define the iconography and ideology.
Back to the PS3. I think I will wait until they hit the same price as a good DVD player or provide a more streamlined interface with other standard home theatre parts before I shell out my hardly earned cash for one.
We used to get a fax for free hair stuff until we took a 6 foot length of paper wrote "Stop Faxing us" on it, fed one end into our fax machine, created a big loop and faxed it back to the company once they had cloed up for the night... If you can get their fax number by hook or by crook... give it a try. If anything it will either tie up their computer fax or kill thier stack of paper and toner in one night.
I have been building wooden computers for a while now and I can't stand all these stick the plastic mac tack on the plastic case crap. No matter what you do with veneer, it only looks good on wood. Shameless Plug -- take a look at some real wooden mods here and here and here and here --/Shameless Plug then tell me what a computer should look like.
As to the price of $600 bucks for their stuff... I hope it comes with hardware and some glue to re stick the veneer when the heat makes it bubble.
On the up side, I am really glad that people are starting to take an interest in making cases out of some natural materials, as per some of the complaints here on/. during the last article on wooden computers, the resources needed to manufacture a metal case are astronomical compared with the renueable materials.
I just hope no one starts doing computer cases that look like those big ass TV's from the early 80'. The last thing we need is another big piece of furniture.
I would be interested to see something made out of reconstituted wood though as it does have a great pattern to it.
Unfortunately it took my girlfriend giving me this in order for me to fulfil my thought... "a comparative test drive between an under-water propeller driven, blue and yellow one-person SubBug, and a giant manta ray." - Douglas Adams, Salmon of Doubt, "Riding The Rays." Douglas gets a free trip to Australia to write about it. Conclusion - "Your manta ray is going to be a lot faster and more manoevrable, and you don't need to change its tank every twenty minutes. But the big points that the Sub Bug wins are for the fact that you can actually get on it."
I remember a recent article on the BBC web site that covered the topic of American sensitivity to sex etc compared to other countries. I can't find the link right now but it was an interesting third party insight.
I really don't know what to say about this. It appears to me, IMHO, things will not get better or freer(sp) in the United States until the bible thumping nut jobs y'all vote in, or let steal elections, are put safely back into the padded rooms from whence they came.
Over the last few weeks here on/. I have been given more reasons to be proud to be a Canadian than I have had in my whole life. We are not flag wavers or Anthem singers, but damn, we sure use our heads when it comes to sensibility.
I am not nocking the United States, where would the world be without you guys? Oh yeh.... nevermind...
I like bill mahr too, but dam, that guy will say anything to keep his job since the terrorist slip... He used to be all about the little guy now he seems to be mostly about himself
Like I don't have enough to worry about at work. Now I have to wonder if my boss will report me for including SCO(r) code in my work saying that I am terroist to his company...
Hey wait a minute... My dad owns the company... great, now he is going to report me for spending too much time reading slashdot....
Does anyone else have a problem with this...
You piss off your boss and end up on a terrorist watch list?
It used to be if someone pissed you off you went to a magazine shop, grabbed the blow-ins and had a tonne of buy nothing now magazines delivered to their house... or even more reciently have gay porn sent to their in box... now you have them totaly screwed by their own govt.
