    so basically, we should reward people who are too lazy to pay for their own self-improvement; people who are too shortsighted to invest money in their futures. and while we're at it, lets reward them with my money!

    possibly the most asinine thing I'll read today, but then again there are a lot of /. posts I haven't read yet. every ounce of technical knowledge I have today I developed either on the job or on my own time and money. I have no obligation to improve people who don't have the interest to improve themselves.

    the role of the state is to define some rights for people and protect those rights for everyone. it should be pretty obvious if -- say, youre alive, conscious, and observing (which I imagine you must not be) -- that the state has no real interest in creating a level playing field, nor should it.

    I don't see why this is a big deal; with private constructors and static members, this is exactly the way most people do enums in Java, and they're 100% typesafe there too. yay MS for inventing this new feature.

    I find it truly unsurprising that nowhere in this article or this discussion has anyone asked or considered whether perhaps ugly, selfish people are the people that can contribute most to the advancement of the species. a bunch of unmotivated nice people sitting on a hilltop holding hands doesnt seem like a way to get much done.

    I am selfish; the majority of things I do probably aren't for the best of other people, and lots of things I do probably make other people miserable. fuck them. it has yet to be demonstrated to me that anyone else is more important than me; I would be shocked if you didnt think that there is noone more important than yourself.

    if you do truly think that society or other people is more critical to the advancement of the species than you are, please do us all a favor and kill yourself; we're short on oil and food.

    why are you looking at every possible source of external data? you know exactly where your code is breaking; you have the exploit right here.

    if your code is horribly broken and relying on other horribly broken code, then sure, it takes you a long time to fix it, but would you rather have even LESS information available to you when you start fixing this bug?

    open source this, free software that, I want to see the source or I refuse to use your software.

    but then the minute someone starts distributing some dangerous source, holy shit, this is a terrible disservice to the community.

    did you ever think that if you read bugtraq and you see a brand spanking new bug that someone discovered and exploited last night - if this bugtraq post contains complete workign source for an exploit and complete instructions on how to use it - then you can turn on your machine, look at the bug, look at the source, and make your own fucking patch? if youre running a machine on the internet and you have the capability to defend it from attacks by fixing source, and someone is GIVING you, for FREE, all the knowledge necessary to fix this bug and assure yourself youre no longer susceptible, its youre responsibility to fix it.

    don't bitch that vendors arent fast to respond, dont bitch that these exploits are dangerous and should not be distributed. the fact is, they ARE distibuted, and instead of complaining, you should be really, really obscenely happy that whoever writes these things is nice enough to tell you about them instead of just rooting you over and over.

    I'm not really sure that the barriers to installing BSD are as high as you seem to be implying. if you can insert a cdrom and read english, you can install openbsd in a few minutes. the only entry barrier that I see is that everyone and their cousin is obsessed with linux and not a lot of people have even heard of the bsds, comparitively speaking.

    Instead, I thought I'd comment on the nonlinear emergent whatevers - if you did not take the time to read that because it looked like some wierd math thing you couldnt understand, I urge you to read it. In fact, shame on the /. crew for not giving this the big, bold, badass headline that it deserves. this is probably one of the most important things that you will ever read on /., and it's somethign that every human over 16 in the US sould be forced to read.

    I suffered through weeks of drivers education classes and learned nothing. if driver's education taught you NOTHING other than the contents of this link, america would be reshaped permanently, forever.

    99% of traffic problems in this country can be SOLVED by following one simple rule - LEAVE SOME FUCKING ROOM BETWEEN YOU AND THE GUY IN FRONT OF YOU. enough room for some jackass to jump in between without you getting all hot an bothered about it. traffic sucks in this country for the simple fact that people ride each others' asses everywhere they drive. well, that and retards driving slow in the fastlane, but tailgating is a far more terrible problem.

    If you're in my boat, and you get basic DSL from SBC thru your telco, you're goign to be using (as others have mentioned) PPPoE.

    If youre using windows to control your router, this is probably an ok situation. however, there appears (at this time, anyway) to be a significant lack of quality PPPoE options for people running linux; people runnign openbsd (at least as of the time that I installed my DSL) are completely screwed.

    the solution: the Cayman (www.cayman.com) 3220H. this little box is a very fullfeatured router that operates on its own - no need to have a computer control it, which means that you can reboot your gateway machine without losing your IP. all PPPoE negotiations are done by the router itself.

    I have one of these; I don't work for or own any of Cayman, just thought I'd let you people knwo the option is available. usually your telco or sbc or whatever will charge you like another hundred bux or so for this box, but in my opinion, it's well worth it.

    (note that you'll have to download the newest operating system image from the Cayman site and flash it onto your router in order for it to properly do PPPoE, but that took all of about 3 minutes to do.)

    I'm more than a little confused why anyone would make a post to an online area of any type which contained any sort of negative comments about the company for which they work. seems a litte retarded to sit around and complain about your job when you can just go get another one.

    I really don't have any pity for anyone who gets narked out via this service; if youre dumb enough to diss your employer online instead of just quiiting, you're... wel,, pretty dumb.

    did you know that theres some kind of governor on your car that limits you from driving over a certain speed? my mom's volvo tops out at 125, if I remember correctly.

    when I sell you software, I dont have to give you the source. I can, but I dont have to. and I can give you interface documentation or an API and documentation for that, but I dont have to.

    when I sell you a steak, you dont get the entrails of the cow.

    if I sell you bandwidth, I can set the terms of this sale to be ANYTHIGN I WANT. I dont want to serve you porn? fine. I want to limit the speed that your napster goes over the line? fine.

    there are limitations put on things that you purchase, whether they are built in limitations or limitations imposed after the fact. deal with it. if you dont like the limitations, buy another fuckign product. welcome to real life.

    if I owned a t1 and I allowed other people to use it, I should have the right to determine what kinds of traffic I will deliver to my users; I shuold also have the right to throttle their bandwidth or to delay their transmissions long enough to prevent congestion. and if they didn't like it, they could go somewhere else for their fuckign bandwidth.

    I really dont understand why so many people here find it surprising that the real world works this way.
