  1. Re:There is no point unless... on What's the Point of IT Certifications? · · Score: 1
I need to break in here. I am a co-principal of a software developement/consultation firm. I am also Cert'd out in my areas of expertise: MCSE NT4/Exchange 5.5/Proxy2.0 then MCSE Win2k, Exchange 2000, ISA server, CCNA and CCNP then MCSE 2003. These are all areas that I knew MORE about AFTER the certification process (that is cracking the books) than before. When I was working for a consultancy, I went through the CCNA and CCNP courses, got my hands on routers and configs, and learned as in "salt of the earth"

The funny thing is, that with 6 months of experience and books, we had un-certed "Cisco" guys with 3+ years "experience" coming to me for answers, Password recovery, EGRP, STUN encapsultion etc... Not that they knew these were the name of protocols that were the solution that they were looking for. I find that people the wave away at certs, do so because they don't know any better.

How do some of the people here on slash dot poo poo certifications when they have none? I'll tell you what, I remember when slash dot had to phone home to Cisco because the slashdot crew fucked up thier router configs big time, you wanna know something, you shoulda got yourself a CCNA instead of sticking with that know-it-all attitude

Check out the thread here: http://slashdot.org/features/01/06/27/124207.shtml

And how about this tidbit from the link: "So he's in the switch and he's disgusted and horrified by how we have it configured, and I'm sure he's right. So I ask him, "Well, can you change all that?" I figure he'd say, "No, this your equipment, you fix it yourself," but he doesn't, he says, "Sure, what's the config password?" You gotta be kidding me, I must have dialed the wrong number here... this cannot be a tech support line... you can't actually get a tech support rep on a toll-free number simply to log in and fix your router setup while you whine at him on the phone... this is not real.

So he's in the switch config and he's having a great time pointing out everything some of our people warned us about months ago. He tells me this is wrong, we shouldn't be doing this or that... "Well, then change it if you don't mind," I tell him. "Switch broke. Me dumb. You fix." ...so at one moment Scott wanted to undo some changes. He bounces the switch... copy startup-config running-config ... the switch resets itself... then email starts streaming into my inbox... then I can ping our sites all of a sudden... we're back online! Everything is back! Weird.

Ok, that's all fine, but Scott is still freaked out about how we have the switch configured. Soon I get a call from Barnaby, another hot shot Cisco tech rep. He just logged into our switch and he's horrified too. He wants to walk me through a total switch upgrade and cleanup right now. "Not tonight", I tell him, "I'm burnt and I need to consult some some network people over here before we mess with this any further.""

Ya your burnt, because you did it to your self! You wanna know why I don't get "burnt"? It's because I am competent and will take any chance to learn from any source before I assume I know it all

So when it comes to hiring, I will give preference to degreed and cert'd people first. I am not saying that I would pass up obvious talent that didn't but your chances are slimmed someone because if you come at me with an attitude that you are smart but just didn't "bother" I may just think your fucking lazy.

Cows, pigs, and chickens serve a huge purpose: food. I know the POV that alot of vegans come from. Mixed in it is a sense of their 'enlightenment' over all the other 'baser thinking, meat eating' people. I live in Ann Arbor, I know of which I speak. I couldn't personally give two shits about getting a side of beef from the local farmer, hell I'll go out and pick bessie my-self.

The one phrase that comes to mind: It's good to be open minded, just stop before the point that your brain flops out of your head.

I think vegans are unholy and go against nature. The human race has always been meat eaters. What other purpose do cows, chickens and pigs serve?

Want to know why cows/chickens/pigs are food? Because unlike Lions, Tigers, Bears oh my, they are big, stupid and slow (especially chickens, can't even fly for christ's sake).

If animals weren't meant to be eat, they wouldn't be made out of meat.

I was never concerned with the DMCA in this, look at Lexmark. I think the forces in play are going to keep it balanced out. I actually have a bigger issue with the moral compass of people that I am likely to come into contact with by virtue of business (software developement).

The DMCA never came in and robbed me blind and then cooked up some wacky argument to justify it. With FedEx and the DMCA, I could really care less because the whole thing is a joke and will get bounced out of court like it should, I have SOME faith in our system.

This wasn't a friggin' coke can on a desk... This was an idiot doing idiotic things and the slashdot community getting all huff'd n' puff'd about "the man" comming down on him.

I am sure that FedEx doesn't want to have to pay a lawyer their fee to write a letter to someone about this, of all things.

I am probably next to Satan for most Slashdotters because I charge for my software package that I spend untold hours working on 'gasp'.

Then again, I have nice furniture.

FedEx SHOULD go after him for Theft, and yes,I know that they are not charging him with theft. I would go after him with something more than just petty theft. I am so tired of shit that is blatant stealing and having slashdotters obfuscate it with some thin argument that any prudent on the street person would see as theft.

Steve Job's reality distortion effect has nothing on the bulk of what the mass of dotters here are capable of. News Flash, FedEx isn't fucking anybody. Don't you dare blame FedEx for this. Blame the moronic cretin. Since that is were the blame belongs. He could have done this and not turned it into a publicity stunt, FedEx would be none the wiser, BUT HE DID. You lay in the bed you make. And Slashdotters as a whole with this and P2P file sharing(pirating) are collectivley and long-term making a VERY uncomfortable bed to sleep in.

You want to know why MY fair use rights are getting fucked, all /.'s need to do is look in the mirror. Thanks a bunch dudes.

As always, my fellow technologist are not connecting with the realities at hand. Do you think Fed-Ex actually produces all those boxes so you can make furniture? Do you thing Fed-Ex gives two shits that he has TWO apartment rents to pay? Who's fault is that? Plus there are plenty of places to go to get discounted or free furniture (Ever see the 30 Days episode with Morgan Spurlock?). Glad I know what this kid looks like so if he ever applies for development job, we can cross him off the list and save the office supplies from being pillaged. Boys and Girls, it's theft. Taking someone else's property and doing something not intended is indeed theft. Remind me never have any of you over for dinner. Who knows what twisted way you will justify stealing whatever I have.

I work in IT, and at three shops where owners have practiced nepotism, it hasn't worked. The firt place it was his Mother and Sister. They, by proxy, are also your boss. W/ The first place, hell broke loose when he was audited (Mom did the books), Mom gets canned, sister lights into him, she gets canned, my workload doubles and pay stays the same. Plus the sister didn't know anything about a computer except how to turn it on. The second place was an ISP, the owners girlfriend, after a couple of fights over the business, she broke up w/him. The third place, Owner hired Sister, Mother, Cousin. Sister was worthless, always f'd stuff like part orders up, very lazy attitude. Has had his mother in tears at times. His cousin... won't even start. The other problems: No matter how hard you as a normal employee work, you ARE NOT family. I find it very disrespectful to the people that are hired to bring family on. I run my own consultancy now, and my wife already knows she will never work for me.
