I use latex on linux and it is fine. On windows MikTex actually goes and finds missing pacakges and downloads and installs them for you which is cool. Texclipse (Eclipse plugin) makes a nice editor - its not WYSIWYG like lyx but rather a code editor and understands the latex codes and bib references etc.
I have used Word DecWrite FrameMaker WordPerfect - you name it and I have used them all in anger, nothing tops latex. We looked again acouple of years ago for a large long project we started then and decided for Latex - especially as Adobe droped framemaker on linux)
We recently introduced a yound student to latex, he was using word. Within a couple of days he said "I am doing everythign in tex from now on".
So train up and become a Jedi master - stay away from the dark side (WYSYWIG;)
You must be prepared to move - you also need to asses your worth in the market even if you wish to move
up internally. So start looking and see how you get on.
Also ask what prospects exist in your company.
I have worked in a US university department now for 2.5 years. I have to agree with everything stated above. Its very interesting and rewarding the pay is adequate the stress is quite low.
I also worked in another semi-academic position for 4 years where the stress was higher mainly because of individual conflicts and politics. So it sort of depends who you are working for.
Many universities are trying to pay Staff (I guess thats what you would be ) along industry lines so you may get paid quite well depending on the level you think you are going for.
I worry about house prices also and I tend to agree with you. Take London as an example. The prices you mention $600K are average or low for some London areas (if we are taling about Houses). This is especially true with the current exchange rate of 1.9 dollars in a pound. London has certainly experienced blips but it also appears stable in the long run. In south of spain house prices have also gone crazy over the years. We sold our place in South of Spain last year when we thought prices were getting ridiculous. The have since backed off but only by a couple of percent, no major crash with plummeting prices. I have always looked at property in a different light to shares because at the end of the day you physically have something with property - you can live in it. With Shares it is all in the air to a certain degree.
They enforce tv license by visiting to see if you have a tv . They dont care if its home made or where you got it. mmm guess that means you have to pay a license even on stolen TVs:)
As commented by others the dry run was done - the building is finished and we use metric ..
