Of course the code will be forked. The real question is who will pay for a commercial version of a closed source scanning program when there is an open source version available?
They are doing this to make money, if they fail to make money I think it will be valuable lesson in the economy of software development.
"Or maybe the community couldn't give a damn about helping until it's an underdog project competing against an evil proprietary product? Some people are more motivated by zealotry than improving the world..."
And others are perfectly content calling people communists, cancer and zealots.
" At the risk of being flamed... does linux innovate? does open source innovate?"
Yes, of course it does. Here are just a few examples.
Zope, Xen (paravirtualization), GFS, reiserfs, parrot, loadable stored proc languages in postgresql, user definable operators in postgresql, selinux, XML-RPC, XUL, SVG, APT/YUM, zeroinstall, git, are just a few which pop into my head right away.
"QL Server may get slammed by many here, but for a small-medium business that needs advanced data analytics to query financial data and export it to XLS/PPT for the executives to make decisions I think it works pretty well and is way cheaper than the alternatives."
Feature for feature oracle costs the same as sql server.
"MSFT has largely been medium user to end-user desktop based. That is because there is a lot of money in those areas. Follow the money and you will find MSFT."
MS has to find new markets, those markets are under serious assault by open source. SQL server for example is being squeezed on the low end by mqysql, firebird, postgresql etc and on the high end by oracle and db/2.
"I think open-source will continue to marginalize infastructure, but as long as MSFT keeps providing information value it will always have the lead. Here information value is provided by the solution and not necessarily the product."
Let's hope that MS management is thinking like you do. As long as they have their head buried in the sand like that we have nothing to worry about.
Open source projects are not copying ideas because they are clever, or useful, or innovative. They are copying MS products because that's what the users are trained on and expect.
Everytime an open source tries a different GUI paradigm the shills start wailing and moaning about how it's unfamiliar. I remember Joel (of joel on software fame) was bitching about how he refused to firefox until firefox duplicated all the keyboard shortcuts of IE.
Damnded if you do, damned if you don't. Copy the MS UI and be accused of chasing MS tails, innovate and hear the howls of the masses because the icon is the "wrong" color or the option is under a different menu.
At a minimum they are using postgresql like the desktop group uses apple as a source of features to implement. The fact that they could look at the code without risking infection of SQL server means they are most likely looking at code too.
You may be right though, they might not be able to lift code from one project to another.
" Bringing advanced SQL queries into MySQL and moving advanced (My)SQL queries out of MySQL."
You should treat your SQL queries as a language. You can use the run of the mill translation libraries that way.
When you think about it that's exactly the problem, translating from one language to another. Lucky for us that problem is common enough to have gotten plenty of attention.
Lets be fair. The countries in the EU are worried that they may lose some sovereignty. We are worried that people will stand in the way of us killing people and taking their stuff.
Personally I prefer the command line, a wisened on DBA once told me "emacs + CVS is the best database tool in the world".
Kids these days though, they can't live without the eye candy.

Actually in the case apple is hasn't worked out quite like you say. Apple development of safari for example tends to be faster then the OS project. Also apple has different goals for their browser. Even though apple has happily contributed code it's become very hard if not impossible to merge those changes back.
"First, let's be clear: excepting their horrible SQL implemntation, I never said SQL Server is bad -- just mediocre. Mediocre (but good enough), cheap, and easy to convince the boss to use constitute and excellent decision in many instances."
Actually it's not that cheap. Feature for feature oracle 10G costs the same as SQL server. Oracle has gone to great pains to make sure they have a equavalent to SQL server at the same price. Oracle does cost more when you get into the enterprise edition but that's because oracle enterprise edition has more features then SQL server enterprise edition. There is a mid level oracle that has all the same features of SQL server enterprise edition for the same price.
Finally oracle 10g is as easy if not easier to administer then SQL server.
Really there is no need to buy sql server unless you are religiously affliated with MS.

Why do people always forget about ingres, firebird and other great open source databases when this topic comes along. Isn't there anybody who can step in tell us their experience with those?
By the way over the years I have been convinced that MSSQL developers follow postgresql development pretty close. They slowly seem to be adding all features postgres has to sql server. I bet they are even using a bunch of the same code.
My purpose here is not to convince the shills. It's to counter their FUD, point out their shilling, make them say goofy things to make their corporation look bad etc. I am just a fly in the astro turfing ointment.
Once again it's impossible to get a shill to accept anything that goes against their corporation. You are here to hype your company and spread FUD against Linux. You are not here to listen to anything anybody else says.
MS has turned to content providers to find another revenue stream. This time he is dealing with people as evil if not more evil then himself. I don't see this turning out well for him.
"Is it not considered "moral" to give a defendant the full consideration of the law? Is it not moral to perform your job to the best of your ability? Is it not moral to uphold the Constitution, despite the fact that you may dislike who the Constitution favors in this particular instance?"
As an attorney you can make choices about who you represent. You can make choices about the law firm you work for. YOu can make choices about which cases to take.
"I would find it very hard to call someone moral who abandons their responsibilities because of personal differences. I would call that person petty and childish, and ask them why they had bothered to enter into law in the first place."
It is not the personal responsiblity of lawyers to defend anybody who comes to them and pays them. What kind of fucked up church did you attend that told you that? Are your parents that fucking stupid that they taught you that? Where did you get such a stupid moral learning from?
If you are using a device with no linux drivers please contact the manufacturer and ask for drivers. That's what I do with windows, I go to the manufacturers site and download the drivers.
As far as the documentation is concerned look at it as an opportunity to contribute. Open source only works when YOU (yes YOU not some body else YOU) contribute.

I have a question.
Are you trying to tell us that microsoft are not a buch of money-grubbing, back stabbing pigs?

Personal responsiblity is for suckers and fools. Smart people form corporations to shirk personal responsiblity.
Don't take it too hard. Look at it this way.

Putting everything is stored procesures makes it harder to maintain the code. In my opinion the database is not the place for business logic.
By the way, although it's extremely common for VB developers to embed SQL into their code it's not considered good programming practice.
As long as you are handing out information....
Any word in improvements to replication? Specifically merge (multi master) replication and sliced (replicating sub sets) replication?

A lawyer can choose not to defend anybody.
The problem is what happens if MS ever gets in front of the supreme court? Will she recuse herself? I kind of doubt it.
The Supreme court is now packed with pro-business religious fundamentalists. Good Luck America, the next 50 years are going to be fun.
