What seems to be lost in the noise is that PHP guys are not saying there is anything wrong with apache2. They are acknowledging that not all the extentions in PHP are thread safe.
In other words it's PHP at fault and not apache2 and they are admitting it.
"But it DOES add that extra little bit of legitimacy in the minds of the Clueless Users "
I guess I disagree. It would make no difference to a clueless user, none whatsoever. They don't care if something is signed they just click OK and go anyway. Besides like you say people sign viruses. Anybody can go to comodo and get a cert for $50.00 if they want. It doesn't prove anything.
In summary. Clueless users don't care, users with clue know it doesn't mean anything. So why bother?
"its a lot of work keeping all licensing up to date with a busy business to run."
Yes it is. You must add that cost when you are evaluating your software choices. It should be a part of your TCO and risk assessment.
Just another cost of doing business there is no reason to be resentful about it. You could always choose not to use proprietary software and then you would not need to worry about it.
Is windows for stupid people or does using windows make people stupid?
Why are you hanging out with people who are that dumb anyway? In this day and age not to know the most basic thing about the internet and computers seems preposterous.
We really should encourage all ex employees to contact the BSA. I have never worked anywhere that didn't have at least one or two desktops with much stolen software.
People who steal software must be punished. It's good for everybody. It's good for open source, it good for makers of proprietary software.
I know what you mean about pushing it to the desktop automatically. I have tried that with active directory but with very limited success. I have never used SMS but people I know who have used it say it pretty much sucks. I have never used zenworks, maybe that one actually delivers what it promises.
I prefer just to install it on to a server once rather then pushing it to the desktops.
Except that the crime in this case is copyright violation. In most cases it's not a felony if the total amount of "damage" is less then a few hundred dollars.
I should say that publishing torrents is not the same as sharing the file. It would be damned hard to prove a crime in this case.
Only if the american legal system was fair and just. Alas it's not and whoever has the most money wins.
Revolutions don't come from people pissed off about not being able to see their shows.
Lao Tzu has a saying "fill a mans belly, kill his ambition". The politicians know how to fill our bellies and to distract us by shiny objects and gays getting married.
The geeks could of course revolt, they could for example shut down all the routers they are in charge of and bring the planet to it's knees. But we wont because we too have our bellies full and are distracted by shiny objects and gays.
In America politics are already controlled by big business. In the last election there were only a handful of congressional districts that were anywhere close to being competitive. Only a couple of states were in play for the presidential election too.
For the vast overwhelming majority of Americans their votes don't matter.
Also for 99% of the american public this is a non issue. They care way more about Gays being married then just about any other issue on the planet.
"Besides, we still have to deal with IE only websites, which perhaps his wife has to use in her career? You've made a faulty assumption, friend."
People have been saying this a lot but I honestly haven't seen one for more then a year. Clearly I don't visit the same sites that you do.
Just yesterday I thought I would see that the gmail interface looked like in IE so I fired it up and google didn't support it because it was only 5.0. I haven't had to upgrade it since then because I have never used it since then.
First of all I really don't buy this bit about XP ignorance. I bet everybody here has used XP and knows exactly what it's like. What's worse most people have to support XP either at work or at home.
I hate XP because I have to use it every day. It has nothing to with ignorance and everything to do with bitter experience.
As for fundamentalism I say bullshit. Look at the highest modded comments and you'll see 50/50 or even more high rated comments that are pro MS and pro XP.
If you really want fundamentalism go to gotdotnet.com. There they actually erase posts that are pro linux, pro java or anti MS.
My father switched from a Mac to a PC because some nutjob told him it would be easier.
Afterwards he called me several times a week with problems he was having. Eventually I told him that I would buy him a mac but I would not answer any more questions about the PC. He didn't let me buy him a mac but he did stop calling. Now he is hassling the nutjob who told him to buy a PC and that's the best outcome for everybody.
I stopped using mail.app. Mainly because it kept whining about my imap servers ssl certificate. I could not convince it to accept my certificate permanently.
I don't want an MSI that I have to push to every desktop. What I want is to install mozilla on a network file share and put a shortcut to that. I also want to be able to override user prefs for certain items. For example I want to set all the user home pages to my intranet site.
Finally when I install a plug in or an extention I just want to do it in one place.
No.
Did you mean the state or the company? I don't work for either one but I am curious why you asked.
According to the description that's a SOAP client not a server.
In other words it lets you call soap servers from inside of Zope. I need to go the other way.
Has anybody figured out how you can publish your python methods as soap calls? It does XML-RPC but where is soap?
According to this article php with fastcgi is an very performant option under IIS. Perhaps the same should be tested for apache2.

" What about when your former employer has done nothing wrong?"
Then they have nothing to worry about. The BSA comes, does an audit, finds nothing, leaves. No harm, no foul.
Well maybe a little harm but certainly not enough for the business owner to switch to open source or anything.
"While people who 'steal' other copyrighted works such as music and movies should be protected?"
did I say that? Of course they should not. Stealing music discourages independent artists and furthers the RIAA monopoly.
"But no-one should contact the MPAA/RIAA regarding unappropriate use or distribution of copyrighted works, right?"
I say go ahead. Only then will people stop feeding on the slop that those organizations throw before the swine.

"how do I know that the unsigned binary Firefox installer"
It's signed using GPGP. There is also a checksum.
It's easy enough to check if bothered.
Is windows for stupid people or does using windows make people stupid?

Silly me. I could not get it to work. Thunderbird OTOH had a dialog box that said "accept this certificate permanently" so I went with that.
Just exactly what is the punishment for conspiracy to commit copyright violations?
Anybody know the answer? Is that even a felony?
I am sorry but that's really a stupid suggestion.

Politics isn't the answer, it's the problem.

Nonetheless you have no right to complain that windows sucks if you keep using it after knowing how much it sucks.
Why should MS care how much their product sucks if you continue to buy it an use it?
I stopped using mail.app. Mainly because it kept whining about my imap servers ssl certificate. I could not convince it to accept my certificate permanently.
In mail I like being able to say "open link in a new tab". To me that's worth the price right there.
As for not loading as much I noticed that the new firefox tells you how many messages you have which means it's loading up some sort of a mail client.
I could maybe see making the editor and the irc separate but mail and browser belong together.
Why they should do is to let you add moz components one at a time.
