No it's a trap. The code that Novell puts in there will violate MS patents. Novell is rushing so that the only "safe" was to use OO is to use theirs. Everybody who uses OO that does not come from Novell will be open to a lawsuit from MS.

It doesn't matter if the code is open sourced and hosted on sourceforge. It most likely violated MS patents and MS said they intend to sue anybody who USES any software which violates their patents unless it was bought from novell.

So once you download and install this plug in you make yourself a target for a lawsuit from MS. Furthermore the developers who may contribute to the plugins will also be sued (according to the CEO of MS).

Open source doesn't mean jack shit in this case. MS is laying the groundwork for a series of lawsuits.

The legal front is another and more dangerous front in the war against MS. Overall it was a great front to open up and they have been steadly loosing there. Company after company has gotten hundreds of millions of dollars from MS. This is a war that MS doesn't know how to fight very well as evidenced by their steady stream of losses.

Every penny MS spends paying lawyers and paying penalties is a penny they are not spending on engineering, design, or bribing politicians.

In the long run opening up the legal front in the war against MS will be looked as a great strategic move.

Lets face both linux and apple are improving at a faster rate then windows. Vista just hit the streets so there won't be anything new from MS for at least three to five years and in the mean time the competition will be continually improving. MS will be too busy suing open source companies and people who use open source software, that's their new revenue stream I guess.

Why does he have his own scholarship when he could have funded the millions already out there. Why does he have his own charity when he could have funded the millions out there already. I tell you why. Because it's very important to him that his name be attached to those gifts. He needs to reform his image and that of MS. This strategy has worked brilliantly. Every time the topic of MS and it's evilness comes up people immediately point to bill gates charity work as if it was MS that was giving that money away.

My point is that to bill gates the giving away of the money has a purpose other then just helping people. It's important to him that people associate the money with him and his company. So yes it is all about himself. It's all about convincing you and others like you that he is not some cutthroat criminal who made billions breaking the law and it's worked brilliantly.

Anyway corporations are not run like democracies and the govt is not a product. Could you imagine if the govt sucked as much as windows. Bill Gates never gets things right the first time.
