Having met a few softies (we need a better term) I concur. MS is mostly a cult with Bill Gates as the charismatic leader. I compare them to scientology. Apparently Bill gates has been studying scientology because he has adopted many of their techniques especially the one about adopting highly cryptic internal lexicon.
It's facinating the number of paralells between scientology and Microsoft.
" Believe it or not, everyone that works for Microsoft isn't an evil person trying to crush the free software movement."
Well maybe not all but surely most of them are:)
All kidding aside, that's beside the point.
MS itself is trying to crush the free software movement. If you work for that corporation then you are helping them crush the free software movement. You share some responsiblity (no matter how small). This guy has decided to share even more responsiblity for crushing the free software movement by moving himself front and center in their effort. He has called on Mozilla to abandon cross platform APIs and toolkits and to adopt MS only APIs. I doubt anybody at Mozilla foundation is dumb enought to take that bait but apparently this guy thought they might.
He may not be evil but he sure is stupid if he thinks the Mozilla project would abandon a cross platform API set and start using patented proprietary APIs.
If this guy was serious. If he truly was anything but a MS droid he would ask a different question. That question would be.
How can I and Microsoft help the Mozilla foundation write a patent unencumbered cross platform XAML implementation so the goodness of XAML is available to Firefox users no matter what their platform.
OK, OK you can stop laughing now. I am not saying that anybody that works at MS will actually say such a thing.
The economy is a complex beast. Right now a few things are indisputable.
We are running a record deficit with no plans to reverse it. In fact it will get much worse as the boomers retire.
We are running a record trade deficit with no indication anywhere on the horizon that it will get better.
Mean wages have been stagnant for a very long time now.
There has been a massive net loss of jobs over tha last four years.
Right now the economy is being propped up by the massive injection of taxpayers dollars. This is not sustainable for the long term. Eventually the increased deficit will cause the interest rates to rise and the dollar to start losing it's value. This is inevitable, it's economics 101.
Eventually the govt will have to stop spending so much. Once that happens expect a shrinkage in the overall economy which will produce massive layoffs.
As I mentioned above one the boomers start retiring all shit will hit the fan. I predict violence on the streets as frustrated young people fight back.
The economy sucks. It's being propped up by smoke and mirrors by the politicians. they will be successful for a little while longer but sooner or later the laws of economics will catch up.
Save your money now. Get out of debt. Make sure your car and mortgage are paid in full. Stock up on staples. Cut down non essential spending. Get a passport and start investigating where you will immigrate to if things get desparate. It's all downhill from here.
Holy shit. Your entire testing process consists of tem minutes a month? You are not testing you are rubberstamping. Might as well set every desktop to automatically install the updates themselves.
I guess you should add another server licence and a machine to your TCO then. Of course you'll also need to add your testing time too. I imagine you'd want to make sure that server has everything installed in your enterprise and test every single program to make sure it's working OK.
If I was a bot writer I'd write one that uninstalled any service packs as soon as they were applied. This way once you have infected a machine it will always be exploitable.
I applaud your choice but I am surprised the oracle won't grant the use of their "license" on another platform. You'd think that since you paid for the database you'd be able to use on any platform supported.
BTW you better hope that your applications don't use stored procs or subselects or views. You'll really miss them.
It's not and that's the problem. No windows user wants to type commands. They think it's repugnant and old fashioned. They are allergic to the command line. In fact MS employees and admins make fun of linux by saying they left the command line behing 10 years ago.
Your CIO does not read slashdot. Your CIO reads the wall street journal.
TO be fair WSJ is one of the most influential publications in the world in all matters. These people sway elections for gods sake. I think getting your boy elected the president is more important then getting linux on the desktop for most people.
Hey not bad only four reboots to patch your machine. Maybe one day MS will catch up to linux and be able to upgrade without needing a rebot at all.
I suppose we should not be too hard on MS. THey have only been trying to perfect windows for 20 years now. Maybe in a another 10 years or so they will get it right.
In a real sense yes. They are an occupied population under the command and control of the US forces. There is a marginal puppet regime installed by the US which pretends to be some sort of an iraqi authority. This so called governing council has no real power because Paul Brenner (de-facto king of Iraq) has final say on all their decisions.
On top of that the US kills iraqis daily. Sometimes a dozen at a time and other times by the hundreds. To us every person we kill is an "insurgent" to them we are killing random people by dropping bombs on their cities.
As for insanity All I have to say is that desparate people do desparate things. Not everybody has the luxury of killing people they hate with missiles and airplanes. We are very fortunate that we can kill tens of thousands of people from the air without suffering much casualty ourselves. It's a byproduct of spending more on the military then the rest of the world combined. Killing is fun and entertaining for us. We sing songs about it, we make movies about it, we have tv shows about it.
It's not "nervous nellies", it's suckers. There is one born every minute. Just because somebody is a CIO that does not mean they are not suckers. In fact my anecdotal evidence suggests that a greter percentage of CIOs are suckers compared to the general populace.
I imagine it will take a while to reverse engineer that code.
In a better world with an ethical and moral MS the spec would be published and MS would help the samba team. Too bad Bill G and Steve B were born without a conscience.
These days people don't scan the resumes as much. Send your resume in hr-xml format so that it can slip easily into SAP or peoplesoft. You can also send along some stylesheets to generate nice looking HTML or PDF files from it.
Thank you. And yet you do not dispute anything I say.
Hey I hear there is a forum someplace on the internet where they are making fun of MS, you better rush over there and defend them. Go run my little friend. You are wasting precious time reading my post when Bill gates is under constant attack. He needs your help!
A police interrogation is not under oath. You are under no obligation to tell the truth to the police. You are free to lie to them as much as you want to. The best thing is to say nothing but lying to cops is not a crime.

"Why is this any different from Linux?"
It's not and that's the problem. No windows user wants to type commands. They think it's repugnant and old fashioned. They are allergic to the command line. In fact MS employees and admins make fun of linux by saying they left the command line behing 10 years ago.

"Iraq doesn't exist?? ;-)"

I don't think the Arabs see the US actions in the same light that you do. It's one thing to watch fox news and another to watch al jazeera.
Right now the prevailing perception in the arab world is that we are occupiers. In other words the US is to Iraq what israel is to palestine.
I thought you were joking until I read the last line of your post.
A dialog box would pop up asking for the root password. At that point one presumes the user knows enough not to type it in.
If the user is too stupid to actually give permission the application to mess with the system apple is not responsible.
DO they ship apache with every copy of mac os x?
The fact that you can mount your zaurus as a disk and transfer files back and forth alone ought to push above your palm.
It's not "nervous nellies", it's suckers. There is one born every minute. Just because somebody is a CIO that does not mean they are not suckers. In fact my anecdotal evidence suggests that a greter percentage of CIOs are suckers compared to the general populace.
Ironic that a believer in God would denigrate the ability of another to reason.
I imagine it will take a while to reverse engineer that code.
In a better world with an ethical and moral MS the spec would be published and MS would help the samba team. Too bad Bill G and Steve B were born without a conscience.
The scientologists once DOSed the IRS by filing thousands of lawsuits to keep their tax exempt status. It worked beautifully, the IRS backed off.
Sounds like MS is adopting the same tactic. They are DOSing the patent office.
Come to think of it the cult of scientology and the cult of microsoft sure do have a lot in common.
These days people don't scan the resumes as much. Send your resume in hr-xml format so that it can slip easily into SAP or peoplesoft. You can also send along some stylesheets to generate nice looking HTML or PDF files from it.
This is slashdot. The headlines are about MS, linux and every single point release and pre-release of Mozilla.
If you don't like it leave.
Thank you. And yet you do not dispute anything I say.
