Why yes. Who else would be upset if somebody made fun of Microsoft corporation. Do you get upset if people make fun of maytag corporation or gilette corporation?
Why would anybody care what anybody says about any corporation? I don't care, but you do. You care enough to post about it and whine about how unfair slashdot is to poor little Microsoft and helpless little Bill Gates.
Your willingless to bravely defend a corporation against the slashdot masses indeed makes you a corporate sycophant. You may not like what you have become but you can't hide from it.
This si slashdot you moron. If you want something else go somewhere else. The internet is big enough to accomodate slashdot AND corporate sycophants like you.
Martha didn't even profit from her "crime". She simply avoided a possible loss of about 40K. Pathetic that she goes to jail for that wile Bill G pays a fine.
I don't know if it's a woman thing, I don't know if it's because she is a big donor to the democratic party or what but a huge injustice has been done to her.
Since I haven't programmed in C in over a decade I must have overlooked that feature of xcode.
I am interested in support for python, ruby, perl and java. The java supports sucks donkey balls, it does not even have code completion for gods sake, even jedit has that.
"That said, if Parrot is going to be so good, why not just dump Java and its 'tons of' bugs and design problems? Lets move on people, newer, faster, better stuff over here..."
My point is that they will. Unless Sun open sources java they will developers in hordes once other VMs like mono and parrot mature. Python is already draining java programmers.
As I said. Java is the new cobol. Good for doing non gui stuff on mainframes and little else.
Lets say that a child molester has been convicted of abusing 50 kids. Lets also say that this child molester moved into your neighborhood.
When that child molester starts hanging around the playground do you think to yourself that he is simply enjoying the nice day?
We judge people by their past actions. We would not attribute benevolent motives to a child molester hanging out at the playground would we? Same with corporations.
It would help propagate java further by having it included by default in every single linux distribution.
The OSScommunity could fix some of the long standing bugs in teh JVM. The bug parade also include tons of feature requests which although very popular are not important to sun. If Java was open sourced these feature requests would be implemented and make java a better platform.
They could save money that they spending on java development now.
Last but not least. It would prevent java from becoming another cobol. Java is facing heavy competition from.NET. In a year or so parrot will come out of beta and preliminary results show that it will be faster then the JVM. If parrot fulfills it's promise (and there is no reason to think that it won't) you'll get all the advantages of the JVM while being able to use perl or python.
Parrot has the potential to be a very disruptive development for java. Sun needs to be proactive about defending against it and.NET/mono. Right now they are simply pretending that there is no threat and they can go along like they always have.
The problem is not that API it's the dev tool. This guy likes xcode. Xcode is great if you want to code in objective-c but it sucks if you want to code in java. It also does not support any other language.
Instead of wasting time and money on xcode apple should join the eclipse group and make sure there is a decent plug in for webobjects (yes I know about wolips) and objective c.
Finally they should give serious thought to abanding objective C. Yes it's a great language but let's admit that people don't want to spend time learning it. Switch to python or ruby or something and be done with it.
While I am at it i'll also re-iterate my pet peeve. An official supported by apple ports collection please. One that's rich like freebsd ports.
Enough with the unsupported halfway hacks to make everything work already. Apple isn't going to get far solely relying on volunteers to make their OS whole. They can leverage the volunteers by committing developers on the apple payroll to open source projects. It's a small price to pay for a lot to gain.
I'll give you summary. 92% of americans believe in god. 85% believe in heaven 82% believe in miracles 71% believe in the devil And here is the kicker. 69% of americans believe that religion plays a too small of a role in peoples lives.
That's right. 69% of americans want more religion not less.
" why is it the people see greed as a vice when its really a virtue?"
Probably because they were raised on traditional religious morality and values. All religions (except satanism) preach that greed is a sin and should be avoided by moral people.
"I'm sure that some clever individuals will find a way to get around this Orwellian nonsense in no time."
Sure but don't bet on it having great effect. Just like the US the masses are very easily manipulated.
Right now people who disagree with the administration are being called terrorists and traitors by the administration and their media attack dogs. This works very well. I bet it works even better in China.
If I could force every single american to read 1984 this year I would. This administration has done a masterful recreation of that novel.
I especially love the use of "civillian contractor" as doubletalk for mercenary.
On a side note I just read that we are hiring mercenaries to "interrogate" iraqi prisoners because they are not subject to the geneva convention. Apparently the mercenaries have been raping the prisoners in order to make them talk. The army claims it has no jurisdiction over these people so it's hands are tied.
Java is a very rich environment. You can do anything you want to with it. For example you can write applications that interact with j2ee servers, servlets or go straight to the database. Java has a huge library of commercial and open source products to help you get done whatever you want in a repid manner.
According the mozilla web site XUL database access isn't even baked yet. Without being able to access databases you'd be hard pressed to write a useful application don't you think?
"How is installing mozilla on each and every desktop different from installing java on each and every desktop?"
It's not.
"With java you can have web-start applications - with mozilla you can have XUL applications."
My point is that you can do a hell of a lot more with java then you can with XUL. If you are going to install something on the desktop anyway you might as well install the JRE which is smaller then mozilla.
Open source is not a career. I don't know who told you it was but you need to disabuse that notion.
"Open Source will be working when companies worldwide are ditching Windows / Office and other common proprietary desktop software en masse."
That will happen in about two years. It will start this year with the risk taking companies and tech companies. In 2005 the migration will speed up immensely. In 2006 linux will be on roughly 20 to 25% of all corporate desktops.
Now it's SCOs turn. They will file a motion that says in effect 'did too!'. DC will then file another motion that says 'did not!'. It will go on like this for about a hear and a half.
The American legal system is exactly like a couple of five year olds arguing.
Anybody who has followed the brain numbing briefs files over and over again in this case realizes by now that the american legal system is a joke.
I have never been interested in the law before before this case and I have done my best to keep up to date by reading groklaw and let me tell you no human should be a witness to such absolute and utter stupidity.
Motion after motion of silly documents, delay after delay. How long has the SCO case been going on? The judge isn't even close to making a decision yet. All the point-counter point motions are not done yet. It will take five years at this pace for the judge to even start the trial.
"That stupid philosophy is precisely the reason why OSS isn't moving faster "
Define "isn't moving faster". It's moving a lightning speed. It's being adopted by all major IT companies except one. Even the unmentionable company is flirting with pseudeo OSS. Exactly how fast were you expecting it to move anyway?
If you have to install a 7 meg browser (mozilla) to make your application work why not just ship an application that updates itself over the network? Better yet why not just write a java web start application. Either way you have to get some sort of a platform installed on each and every machine and keep it updated. maybe if Mozilla could get their act together and come up with a clever way to share a network installed mozilla amongst the desktops we would have a compelling solution. It's a lot easier to distribute an icon to every desktop then a full blown application and it sure would be handy to just upgrade the network copy and go home. Mozilla really needs to look into centralized management of user prefs, plug ins, bookmarks etc.
Where MS kills you is in forcing people who have windows to install IE and updating IE when they update their windows. Maybe what's needed is a XUL activex plug in so that XUL will work with IE.
I do agree with you about the database application thing though. 90% of all business applications touch a database.
"Apparently, XAML is a complete replacement for HTML. So, it means that you have the ease of use and flexibility of every web development language, plus the markup, in one single language."
I just don't buy it. It certainly does not have the simplicity of HTML. HTML was great because any kid in high school could put together something in a hurry. XAML looks way too complicated for that to happen.
My guess is that MS will have to have some sort of XAML plug in into visual studio so you can draw the screens and whatnot. At that point it will be pretty much like any other IDE programming any other gui except with a crappy psudo-language based on XML.
Just get jbuilder and draw pretty GUIS using it and publish a webstart app. It will be easier and faster trust me.
"Director of Quality Assurance write macros (basic) for his Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet that generates graphs based on collected metrics data and populates a web site."
Not where I work. They hired a report writer. That's right, this guy's job is to write reports and give them to the management (in excel format of course).
"Director of Software Engineering implements defect tracking system, with metrics managemenet system"
Not where I work. They paid 5 figures for a defect tracking system.
" I'm a "corporate sycophant"? For that post?"
Why yes. Who else would be upset if somebody made fun of Microsoft corporation. Do you get upset if people make fun of maytag corporation or gilette corporation?

SO let me get this straight. If a prosecutor comes up to you and says you comitted a crime and you say that you didn't you should go to jail?
There is a constitutional amendment against self incrimination. You should look into it.
This si slashdot you moron. If you want something else go somewhere else. The internet is big enough to accomodate slashdot AND corporate sycophants like you.

Just look at this war we are having. Have you seen any dead people on TV or newspapers? Why not? Don't we kill people over there?
The govt has decided that the US citizens are not allowed to see pictures of people we kill or even our soldiers that got killed.
Once in a while a picture will escape but by and large the US has kept very tight lid on what you can see and how much dissent they will tolerate.
Amen Brother.

Whaaah mommy make them stop attacking MS. It's not fair that a handful of kids should attack the richest corporation in the world.
Grow up willya. So slashdot attacks MS. Get over it.
People also attack other corporations on other web sites. If you are so upset go defend maytag or nissan or something.
MS attacks all kinds of people and corporations.
People attack linux and OSS all over the net.
That's life on the net. Get used to it.
