Private schools don't take everybody and they cost a lot of money. Home school is basically for people who want to raise badly socialized religious fundamentalist kids.
"This is nothing new. Most schools, even in areas that are highly "liberal," try to control their students' thoughts and actions to the point of extreme."
Really? I find this statement quite unbelievable and think that you are simply making this statement up. DO you have some sort of study you can point to?
"Hmmm... maybe that is the definition of Beta. It's release quality software (or at least of the quality of most software releases), but if anything breaks or someone complains about support, you can just say "what do you expect? It's only a beta"."
IN the world of open source when you release a beta you are asking for the users to test it and tell you when things go wrong. In the case of google that's impossible. You can't contact them and tell them there is a bug in their software.
"we are rapidly turning into a nation of "freedom of politically correct speech" which is a sad state of affairs."
Yes indeed. Just try critizing the military. Every time you disagree with the war in Iraq you are compelled to say something like "but our brave boys are doing the best they can" as opposed to "our brave boys are playing soccer with the heads of the people they killed".
"They do a lot worse all the time. I'd like you to list one reaction even remotely similar to the staged protests over the Mohammed photos in the Jyllandsposten. Just one."
There were protests, some building were damages, many protesters were killed.
I remember billions of people protesting the war against iraq worldwide, those protests dwarfed what was happening with the cartoons.
I also remember that many abortion doctors were killed and many abortion clinics were bombed so I would say that was equal to if not worse then the cartoon protests. In that case the protesters actually killed people as opposed to being killed by the police.
There are two that I could think of just off the top of my head. There were also a slew of church burnings and I sure the people who did that thought of it as a protest. Didn't involve a lot of people but probably caused more property damage then the cartoon protests.
Sure but it refuses to 80% of the things it's capable of if you are not using exchange. As a pure pop or imap client it's a pig without legs. You are much better off with thunderbird.
"I'm forced to wonder, though, why just telecommuters? Why not financial instrument traders? Why don't people living near the border of two states pay full income tax in both of them?"
"Let's not even begin to talk about cases where Google has been discovered to editorialize news headlines, such as removing the word "alleged" from a headline describing Guantanamo Bay as a "torture camp"."
I think it needs to be pointed out that the actions that the US army has admitted to in gitmo such as waterboarding, subjection to extremes of heat, forced feeding etc are regarded at torture by every known standard except the US definition of torture as defined by this president.
So torture is not "alleged" it has taken place and the US has admitted that they have done those things. It's just the this administration insists that waterboarding and forced feeding are not torture.
Kind of like Clinton with the "it depends on the meaning of 'is' is." Except of course he was talking about blowjobs and we are talking about torture.
"Sun gives the JDK away for *free*. So why would they care if a different group was doing developement. "
I don't know. That's a real good question and one that I can't figure out a reason for it. Why isn't it open sourced already? I mean why open source solaris and not java?
Sun will be very careful to make sure whatever license they come up with for java it will not be compatible with the GPL, just like they did with the solaris license.
This is because they are deathly afraid (and rightly so) that the code will fork and be released under the GPL like you said. The second part of that though is that the GPLed fork will improve at a faster rate and will be better then their version in no time at all and nobody will use their version anymore.
That's the real problem, they are afraid they won't be able to keep up with the GPLed fork.
"The whole free software vs. open source debate is so tired. Stallman, really needs to give up on the whole anti "open source" label crap."
So Stallman should just give up on his entire lifes work. Because you are tired of hearing about it. It bothers you so Stallman should change his entire moral framework and abandon all of his principles. To please you.
The problem with Google is that there is no support when things go wrong. I just got my invite to Gmail for domains. I followed their link to set it up and got an error message. Now it thinks that it's set up but there is no admin user and it's not set up. It's basically useless. When I log in I get a blank screen.
I try to email their gmail helpdesk and all I get is an automated response. They don't have a newsgroup for gmail for domains, they don't have an email address to write if you have problems, they don't have a phone number to call, they don't have an IRC channel.
With google beta means it probably works most of the time but if it doesn't you get no support at all.
Has anybody noticed how frequent the gmail servers act up lately? What is going on in there?
Yes "plenty" do but "most" don't. Having said that the GPL prevents the "plenty" from making their extentions proprietary so the coder gets all the enhancements back.
Singing in the corner while it may seem pleasent to you will inconvenience somebody else. The shop owner, they guy trying to eat his lunch in peace, the passer bys who have to walk around the crowd etc.
You are no different then the last guy. Your mantra is "Be beneficial to me, bother other people if you must".
My point is that all protests inconvenience somebody.
The world is not black and white. I benefit from hick in montana milking cows and some rancher in Argentina rasing a herd of delivious cows but it's not REASONABLE for me to pay tazxes in those places. But it's REASONABLE that I pay taxes when I telecommute to another state.
Not the GPL. The cost of the GPL is too high to bear for most corporations and MS won't touch anything that has the stink of GPL on it with a ten foot pole.
I thought Libya were the good guys now. Didn't Bush just take them off the terrorist list (or whatever the "bad people" list is called).
Don't even get me started on those cubans, I mean the all the terrorism committed by cubans in the last 50 years it's a wonder we have any Americans left at all. We should definately keep them from coding, who knows what kind of a weird terrorist code the cubans will write. I hear those cubans are so evil and smart that they can make your brain explode if you read their code!.
I think it's vile that MS is encouraging communism in young people. It's just not right to encourage such anti capitalist, anti American behavior amongst young people.
As I said you will not be convinced by any protest. YOu are the type of person who feels that stirring the pot is itself wrong.
The purpose protests is to make people aware and to make them motivated to push for change. This is not an easy thing because so many people are like you. They just don't care about anything that doesn't effect them directly and they only care when it becomes inconvenient for you. If I protest that I or my friends are being harmed you don't care. The only way to make you care is to bother you a bit and see if you will care enough at that point to see what the fuss is about.
Well you are a typical american, of course you would rather not pay taxes to benefit the state that nurtures your company. You probably would rather not pay any taxes anywhere.
Still though you directly benefit, not just one intangable way fifteen steps down the road.
"So because I support the cause, here's a tip for aspiring protestors: Be unobtrusive (no assaulting strangers with pamphlets), be unrepetitive, be respectful, and be funny. Being liked is way more important than being right. If they like you, they'll look into your problem."
So in other words don't protest at all.
All protests are inconvenient to somebody. It seems to me that you are not the type to care about any protesters. I don't think you are reachable by anybody who wants to disturb the status quo.
NY has provided a whole slew of services to your business. Your business has chosen to be located in NY despite having the choice to move anyplace in the world. Therefore there must be something there that your business likes and since they seem to be thriving enough to hire you and let you work from a remote location they must be getting their money's worth.
In other words you might not have this job if your company wasn't located in NY.
Private schools don't take everybody and they cost a lot of money. Home school is basically for people who want to raise badly socialized religious fundamentalist kids.

"Conservatism and Islamophobia have nothing in common."
Except of course that islamophobia is very fashionable in conservative circles just like homophobia is and racism used to be.

Again it all has to do with reasonableness.
"Let's not even begin to talk about cases where Google has been discovered to editorialize news headlines, such as removing the word "alleged" from a headline describing Guantanamo Bay as a "torture camp"."

Apache got on the java bandwagon early but they are one of a very few open source organizations that have embraced it.
The problem with Google is that there is no support when things go wrong. I just got my invite to Gmail for domains. I followed their link to set it up and got an error message. In the greater conversation of innovation in the IT industry MS is the guy who says...
me too!.
