"In many places, it is legal (in the context of the property owner) to shoot someone for Trespassing, Breaking and Entering, Attempted Burglary, etc."
I really don't think so. I think you have to be reasonably sure you were in mortal danger before you took somedies life. I don't know of anybody who was able murder somebody for merely trespassing on their property and I would be shocked if any state had such a law (even texas!).
"Personally, if someone unknown to me enters my home uninvited (especially say after 10 P.M.), I will shoot first and ask questions later. Because property holders are allowed to shoot on sight,"
Once again I don't think any property owner is allowed to willy nilly shoot people who enter their house. I am sure there would be trial and am sure you would be found guilty of something and spend time in jail. If not they you would be sued civilly and pay restitution to the family of the person you killed.
"Which, in the end, is my overy-verbose way of saying that it is the right and duty of every American to oppose tyranny from within, and defend the Constitution. If that means shooting agents of said tyrants... well, the price of freedom isn't free. "
People who bring this scenario strike me as being naive to the point of silliness. Ask the palestenians how well it's working to shoot at their opressors. After decades of living with IDF boots on their throats they haven't accomplished jack shit with all their guns and bombs. You really think your 45 can take on the US army? Good luck with that.
"And finally, I personally believe a well placed bullet to the head is a very effective and comparitively humane way to take someone out. YMMV."
Let's hope someone who doesn't like you feels the same way.
You can't control a country with troops. There are three basic components to controlling masses of people. These are religion, Television/Media, and placation.
If you can get people converted to your brand of god it's easy to control them, the more people who believe in your god the more control you have. The vast majority of the worlds population believes in some god or another.
You need to be able to constant bombard the populace with your message and you need to be able to change this message subtly and continuously. In oder to do that you need television. The vast majority of the population view television every night after work. For the vast majority of people their entire waking hours are spend either at work or in front of the TV. As a bonus television makes your eyes focus on a very narrow depth of field which is surprising similar to a hypnotic state. Television is successful mostly because it puts people in a mildly hypnotic state during which they are prone to suggestions. Why do you think people spend a dollar for colored, sugared water?
Finally you need to fill their bellies to kill their ambition (apologies to Lao Tzu). You need to keep them fed and comfortable so that they don't take action against you. You will need to increase wealth till everybody can go to church and afford a TV.
Voila, you are now controlling a country and you don't need a 150,000 soldiers. The largest economy in the world, the richest country in the world with a population of over 300 million people and taking up vast almost unthinkable amount of space is controlled by a surprisingly few people. Much less then 100,000. Hell much less then 50,000.
Look at it another way. A very small cabal of neocons got their boy electected, got themselves into positions of power and took over a country and all it's natural resources with the full consent of the US population. These people (less then a 100 really) "controlled" the US population into waging a war for their beneift/profit/ideology/god.
I disagree. The punishment for theft should not be instant execution without a trial or jury. Even if found guilty the punishment for theft should be execution by shooting. Even if you believe in the death penalty and even if the person was not merely there to steal and should be executed the execution should not be done with a gun. It's too inhumane a way to kill somebody.
I am shocked at people who are willing to shoot people merely for trespassing, theft, or breaking and entering.
They would care mildly if the release of vista got delayed. It's not like their customers are going to go to something else anyway so it's not that big of a deal.
having said that they have friends in high places, no judge is going to allow that to happen. Congress can simply create a law to prevent that. They were ready to do it for RIM they will surely do it for MS.
When Bill Gates says jump the entire govt says how high. He is probably the only person more powerful then the president of the US and the pres can make people disappear.
I forgot why I wasn't using yum list. There was a reason though, I have forgotten it now. Maybe because it didn't display the version numbers or something.. I just don't remember, it's been a while.
I agree with you. When I said "complain" I don't mean filing bug reports. Filing bug reports and especially working with the developers to try different patches, reporting system configs etc are not "complaining". At that point you are an active participant in the game, you are a contributor.
By complaining I am talking about the idiots on/. who are constantly whining that the gimp does not work like photoshop and that it's too hard to learn if you have stolen photoshop and are using it in windows.
I used to wonder why companies would enter into partnership with MS given their history of stealing technology, customers and general backstabbing of anybody who comes within ten feet of them.
Now I know. You can sue them once they steal their technology.
It does take balls though. MS can afford to spend anybody under the table dragging the case through the court system. Hell if SCO can keep dragging IBM through the so called american justice system for three years without ever even concretely making an accusation then anything is possible.
"For the vast majority of users, is *not* the user's job to understand the details of the operating system they are using. Most users will become frustrated at their computer when it behaves in a manner that they do not understand or there is something that they cannot get to work. They do not necessarily care whether it is Linux of Windows or some form of BSD.. they see the interface and that is all that they should have to care/worry about."
Right and I don't care about them either. They don't care about their operating system, they don't care about the developers, they don't care about freedom, they only care about themselves. Why should we care about those kinds of people? I am very serious about this question. Why should the developers care about users who don't care about their operating system or the people who develop it or why it's being developed in the first place. It's not like they paid anybody for anything.
"No operating system is free. while Linux is available without cost and source is freely available, the TCO studies are there for a reason. Whether the user is in a corporate environment or using linux at home, It does not change the fact that there are costs (be they time or cash) related to installing and using any operating system."
You have to install and maintain windows too. You admit that yourself. So what's your point?
"I believe that the analogy of seeing Linux as a 'gift' to users denies the collaborative effort that it has taken to get Linux to where it is today, but if something does not work, it is wuite natural for users to apply their frustrations whereever they percieve the reponsibility to lie. - having worked at a helpdesk for several years in the past, It is my experience that they rarely see the reponsibility as their own:). "
Nonsense. Everybody who participates in the process is a member of a community of open source users, developers, documenters, evangalists, etc. This is our game, this is our gift to the world, this is our experiment with building worlds largest non profit driven meritocracy. You don't have to play if you don't want to, if you want to play jump in, just don't sit at the sidelines and then gripe or yell at people who are working. I have no respect for people like that.
"The development model and technicalities of how an operating system is made available to users is rarely transparent to them. that does not make them ungrateful - simply frustrated:)"
No development model is more transparent then open source. If they don't see it then they they are not looking.
I use VS, at my previous job I used eclipse. Eclipse is 10 times better then VS by any criterea you can think of.
VS is a slow, overly complicated, screen sucking, bloated, and featureless pile of shit. With VS2005 they just caught up to where eclipse was three years ago.
"SAY IT WITH ME: NOT EVERYONE WHO WANTS TO USE LINUX IS A FUCKING DEVELOPER!!!!"
That's exactly what I said.
"There are tons of people who DON'T know how to write programs who want to use a OS that is different then Windows and is NOT Windows and is BETTER then Windows."
You need to get rid of the notion that the only way to contribute is by coding. You can write docs, help people on IRC, design logos, join the FSF, buy a T-shirt, or just donate some time or money.
"They have every right to complain when things are not as they should be....they are users. "
People who complain about linux are the same people who complain about the other gifts they get. They are rude and abusive people who bitch and moan because the gift somebody gave them for their birthday isn't exactly what they wanted or didn't cost enough, or was ugly. The proper response to receiving a gift you don't like is to either pass it on or put it in the closet, in either case to put a smile on your face and say thank you. People who complain about linux are ungrateful boors.
"The Non-Technical user needs to have thier needs addressed."
Why? Why don't they use Macs or Windows and be happy? Why do they need the come to my pool and piss in it?
"Thankfully, there are distros that aren't like you!"
Err, I am a human being, a distro is a collection of software.
Secondly it sounds like you are asking for windows. I don't want windows, windows already exists for people who want it. If you want a registry then use windows.
I already have a unified configuration, it's called the/etc directory which I have put under version control so I can tag known good configurations, do comparisons with previous configurations, roll back to any known good state, keep track of all my changes, know exactly what an install did etc. So go take your registry and shove it.
I don't know why a USER needs an IDE but as a developer I have Kdevelop, eclipse, and Jedit. Other people seem to be fond of Emacs but those people are usually much smarter then me. Have you heard about eclipse by the way? It doesn't sound like you have any idea it exists, I would recommend you look into it. Jedit rocks for all scripting languages I use including python, ruby, php and perl.
I don't use linux because it's cheaper, I can afford windows, hell I have more then one Mac and am about to buy another one. I use linux because I like it, because it's better looking then windows, it's more reliable then windows and it pissess me off less then windows.
Of course not. Now I appreciate your straw man all but I never said that. I said that it's an important part of the spam strategy. So why don't you argue that it's not a part of the overall solution.
"It's the scale of the secrecy required that is unbelieveable, to non-nutbags anyway..."
As I said there are entire intelligence agencies that are secret. Thousands of people work for these agencies and some of them don't even know it.
The trick is to hand out just enough information to each person to get their job done while only a few know what's going on.
You job is to sit here and asnwer the phone with "good morning, sunshine air incorporated how can I help you?" and then take any messages and email them to xxxx@hotmail.com. That person doesn't know that the airplane that is registered to sunshine air ir being used to shuttle people all over to world form one torture chamber to the next. If they knew they would tell or quit but they are an essential piece in the torture flights. Same with every other piece of the puzzle. We would like to hire you to fly this plane from NY to Barcelona. We need to hire you to drive from Barcelona airport to some building and back to pick up a passenger etc.
That's the way it works. Yes you could kill thousands of US citizens to some end, employ thousands of people in the process and not have any of them know what the hell is going on. It's not that hard, it happens all the time.
I am not saying that's what happened, I am simply saying that it's trivial. The govt does it all the time.
What's worse is that by default it goes through all that every time you type yum search. Not only that but it wants to shows you the full description of every package which means page after page of scrolling.
You have to do backflips to get yum to quickly search your local repository and display only the names and the versions of the packages.
The first thing I install on any RPM based distro is apt for RPM.
Everything you have stated already exists. SPF is dead thanks to MS. If you want to blame somebody go blame Bill Gates and co who refused to support it because it was open and it didn't originate on their campus. They tried to push their ip encumbered solution and nobody went for that either.
We can solve this problem today and SPF is an important component of that. If you email server automatically refuses mail from servers that don't have an SPF record it will immediately stop email from all zombies. It will also stop email from all exchange servers so it's going to take some guts to implenent that though.
There is also razor, if every SMTP server was also running a razor then we could pretty much stop spam right there.
"If the U.S. gov't tried to do something like this, thousands of people would of have to known about it."
Who says. The govt is perfectly capable of keeping secrets. The military keeps millions of bits of information secret and the NSA, CIA, FBI etc do too. Hell there are entire intelligence agencies that nobody knows about.
I just don't understand this theory that the govt is incabable of keeping secrets.
"Anyone with a conscience would have exposed this plan and tried to put a stop to it. And there has a to be at least A FEW government employees that have a conscience."
It would not be hard to convince a thousand people that sacrifing 300 americans (remember they didn't really know how many people would be killed if any) to ensure democracy in the middle east or cheaper oil forever, or safety of israel, or even to speed up the return of Jesus Christ.
I bet I could convince a thousand people commit some henious act by convincing them that doing so would fulfill some biblical prophecy.
There are lots of theories as to who assinated Masood and why. Massood was an immensely popular figure and would have been the natural leader of the post taliban Afghan govt. More then likely he would not be a patsy for anyone.
The fact that he died so suddenly just before the US invasion certaintly turned out to be very convenient for both the US and Pakistani governments.

Great. Keep on with python. That way when you need a crypt package you can search on google, find the one you like, donwload it on to your computer, install it, and then subscribe to the mailing list (if they have one) so that you can know when they make an update.
That's so much better then nasty gems and the crappy CPAN.

When I search for a file in windows I have to go get a latte from the corner store. If I search inside the files for keywords I let it run through lunch!.
Wow, it sounds like it might be one tenth as good as searching through your entire hardrive on my mac by any title, song name, musician or album in a half a second.

Yes I am.
