I Belive it was commercial speech that was forced upon people who dont't want to hear it...like something installing in the backround without a proper uninstaller and forces popups...that should be banned evrywhere.
What are you talking about...windows technology is practlicly standing still...evryone in the software industry rips off one thing or another...Microsoft never did anything that impresed me personally...they have a crippled legacy compatibility layer of an OS that filled with ugly hack and patches and compatibility layers...ms makes one step forward and 2 steps back...this year Linux made ALOT of real world progress and all ms did this year is cut the longhorn feature list...so much for a technology driven relese...harder to inovate in Microsofts position cuz there is no technology driven inovation and always money driven inovation...we all know that it is false inovation when it comes to that at least in the software worl nowdays.
I 100% agree...evry windows box i format that i see is floded with porn i give them a knopix CD and tell em to insert and reboot to browse porn or other questionable stuff and evryone loves it....
Evryone made this whole Migrating from windows to linux thing such a big deal i dont know why...anyone who ever installed windows all the way...i mean setup for a blank hd then drivers then updates then some tweaking like turning off services and disabling and enabling some stuff can install any redhatish distro without a problem...but most people
belive it or not can't do that with windows...i see many people who cant right click the right way....those people need service with anything and i think more than half of computer users are like that that ive seen...migration is hard because its not in the OS...OS dosent even matter...if i put anyone with windows experiance in front of my Gentoo box they would not have a problem with my KDE they chat and browse just like on windows....but what if somoene needs some app thats not there for linux...I use Autocad for exaple to do work and i need it...same gouse for ALPHACAM and Cabined Vision and those are not avalable for linux...now until they i have to work with windows cuz there are no viable alternatives for those apps....but for the basics like office stuff and browser multimedia OS or migration is a no issue...just choose whatever u like best and go for it.
Well I read the whole thing and they say that most redhatish linux distros use similar install methods and i think they are right...anyone who ever installed redhat or mandrake can install suse or xandros or lindows...I think its good that they mention this because people from the windows world would be confused about all the difrent flavors you know...
For me because evry year I look back and say...wow look how much progress was made this year...i mean it just grows and there is no stopping it no matter what anyone says.
Agreed but since a particular company is aware of such a userbase...shouldt they make there products more braindead proof...its posible...braindead users like that need help eather way weather it's windows stupid freindly or just as freindy kde or OSX you know.
It is possible to be secure and have that at the same time..just educate users how to type in a password when the need to install something from the box.
The Difrence is that most software for windows is Desighned to run on Administrator and not as a normal user...but with Unix most apps run perfect on a normal user with no privleges without the permision denied issue...unless it someone administrative you dont need root...i think thats a little more freindly.
I see it this way. An operating system should be as secure as posible and as usable as possible...it is possible with minimal sacrifice...i mean look at the numeros linux distros like Suse and mandrake and the like...im not even going into lindows and xandros...i never used OSX so i cant make a comment but in most of my expereances (I'm a part time computer tech) Linux for the "AOLish" people is no difrent than windows and look how much more secure it is...i disagree with popularity making things vulneruble..i think its design...windows is not desighned with security in mind in the first place and nether are the apps that run on it... on the other hand if u put linux or any nix for that matter on someones box with all the services off it will work...i did it lots of times...when i have to format somones infested box i throw suse or mandrake on it and i have zero complaints because people have less problems in general...its posible to do it with windows but some apps will refuse to work without admin privledges...basicly the way i see it is windows is a broken legacy system that should be replaced from the groud up...im not bashing microsoft but windows is just not a good product and security is not very lickeley on it...for averge users it dosent matter
what os it is...most people i do work for are also clueless in windows and thats why they hire somone to help them set things up...even if another non ms Unix derived os came to the top of the market I think it will be more secure because it is not windows...
Someone setup an experiment about 10 years ago with 2 highly percise clocks one was set up on the top of a tall build and the other was set at the bottom...they ticked and stoped at the same exact and the clock on top of the building was very slightly behind the clock on the bottom...so I guess that should say something about his theory of relativaty.
That weird looking guy with glases and a baseball hat that u occasionally see on certian AHEM sites is there BETA Tester...sighn me up:P

You could even get an abolutly free linux distro and make arrangments for your company to personnally support it and get paid LOVELY for it...its's been done before and I personally did it on a small scale by installing linux replacement's for windows nt servers and charging for support personally and doing maintnance via webmin...NEVER even one problem...think about it
I get what you are saying that after a little while it may get a little annoying but there are way around it...you could always use GRP binarys that are optimized by the gentoo developers for varius archs , on my maching (athlon xp 2500+ and NFORCE 2
with 1 gig of ram most packeges compile in under 5 minutes...i know the big monsters take a while and etc-update is not as annoying as u make it seem...just got to know it...like if u update program A and it want to update a config file thats limited to that program u let it go...if it want to update something critical u give it a quick closer look and ur done...im soo used to it that i like to play with a verity of systems but gentoo is my primary distro...its like a must i dont feel comforable with anything else anymore..you know what im saying?
I see how that could happen but you have to really know portage in order to not nuke your system...i did it myself when i first started off with etc-update after and upgrade but the key is before you upgrade any of the configs u yhave to look at them read them and understand whats going on then carefull replace or update or ignore as needed...once i understood how portage works all the way i never had a problem thats all...perhaps for someone not used to it it's annoying but once u are used to it and understand it you never look back because i and i know many people who will agree

SGI came out with some fine high performance linux boxes with up to 256 CPU per kernel check out www.sgi.com

I know it is not posible to make it totally braindead proof...but im sure it is posible to do it better than MS has beed doing it so far, IMHO....

But....Does it run Linux?
SCO Perhaps...
I guess it is not slashdot proff all the way...
Should use this DE when they come out with there own Debian based distro and name it lindows XP....
Does it run Linux?....Wait a minute...XP? Linux XP??? *Runs away*

I Could only imagine people seeing The Nature Jurnals on Kazza or Gnutella and thinking its p0rn
Can you "disable it" by holding the shift key while inserting the cd?
