  1. Re:what's the point? on Uplifting Dolphins · · Score: 1

Is this a troll? Maybe I'm a fish...

The purpose is quite easy and clear. Once there is a common set of words understood on both sides it becomes possible to ask simple questions of the dolphins. From that we will learn more about them from their own responses than by mere observation alone. This was the case with teaching apes sign language and it will be the case with any animal that we can develop a common language that allows simple questions to be asked.

The simple fact is that we don't have the ability yet to understand what they are saying... however we do have the ability to communicate in a common form with common words. Doesn't matter if its something new for both of us; just as long as both parties can really understand it.

What you said is also true of most every LAN I've seen... as in "let me just say that this (a LAN) is one of the most ridiculously insecure technologies in the world, just waiting for packets to be pulled off the wire...". The simple fact is most business WLANs are new enough to where security is a concern, most LANs aren't, and it shows.

I use MBX... and have used it in a pretty decent sized IMAP implementation (120 users/average 180M INBOX). MBX simply adds a line at the start of every message telling the client exactly how long the message is. So instead of scanning until the next header it can just jump. Occasionally there are breaks but they are easily fixed with any text editor (well editors that can open really large text files).

Nope. The simple fact is in today's internet if you are building a large commercial cluster of webservers you are doing two things: CGI and SSL.

You *need* a FPU. When I see people expounding the merits of non fpu boxes with a minimal amount of ram for a cluster it becomes obvious how many large clusters they have actually built. You want maximum ram on each box just for the disk caching alone... the goal is to make sure the network (& equipment) is your bottleneck.

Prolly get modded down for this, but who cares?

Slashdot has taken a dramatic downturn since it was "purchased". Having seen how this works from the inside I understand how it can happen. When a website is acquired there is a certain amount of traffic it is expected to drive to meet AD revenues (if thats the only source it has). This in itself is fair... the site was purchased to at the very least pay for itself and increase the mindshare of whoever owns it.

The problem is... the purchaser usually throws in weird conditions. Some slashdot conditions may have been, "a certain number of front page stories a day", "this many comments a week", or "this many less technical stories". I'm not saying this is the case here, but given some of the things we've seen over the past year its certainly plausible.

Then again its prolly just popularity, Slashdot is for all intents and purposes a BBS and just like any of the old dialup BBS's once they get to popular they lose their spark.

I second this. I've had a PJB for well over a year now; getting one right after the price was set and they opened for retail on the net. Its the best thing I've ever purchased. Yeah it is expensive but it handles everything thrown at it regardless of the bit rate (never tried more than 320), its tough and sturdy and the accessories that come with it are top notch. The headphones are some of the best you will ever hear that aren't monitor type. The battery life isn't a lie... I get above 9 hours per session everytime. Thats a mightly long time of uninterrupted music.

But most importantly they actually care about the product. I dropped the hell out of mine. Cracked the case, broke the battery clip and lost a screw. They fixed it for cost of parts and shipping.

The only draw back to the upgrade to 20 gig? You have to live without it for 3-5 business days.
