Since we are bitching about slashdot (well since you are and this has a high score)...
Anyone know if there has been any status change on when kuro5shin is coming back up? kuro5shin was much more efficient at giving me my geek fix without having to wade through tons of post about CmdrTaco's love and bowel movements (always browse at -1)... that and two missing moderation pieces that slashdot screams out for in agony everday. ---

Then you are at a "stupid" company. Just because some senior level VP doesn't get the 0 day tech knowledge doesn't make them stupid. It makes them a bit less informed... if you are in a tech position that suggest company technologies it is your job to make sure the constant flood of good things they hear about WONDERTECH-X11 is balanced by some good real world knowledge. Its not higher-ups jobs to know why win2k doesn't interop well. Its usually their job to look pretty in a meeting with other suits and take care of that tedious meeting crap "we" don't care about.
Besides all you have to do to stop a rollout to win2k is put a total cost of ownership in front of of them for the 1st year... at 250-400 a desk most CFOs will laugh crazily and then say no.
earlier versions may be as bad as you say but from ns3.3 on, pretty much anything that would compile on any bsd4.2 would compile out of the box on a next box. NeXTSTEP was/is just as much unix as any version of linux say up to kernel 1.1 was. ---

This message is solely targeted at the people who say things like "why now when the market is so unfavorable" or "what about all the other recent failtures"...
Learn something about the stock market before pretending to have some knowledge of how it really works. There are tons of IPOs all the time. You don't hear about most of them. Many of them do exactly what they intended to do and raise the amount of money intended. Just because you read about a few bad computers ones here and there don't assume this applies across the board. To those who would say that its not a good time, when is? tmrw? the next day? yesterday?
Basically it comes down to this. Don't believe the hype about how bad it is to IPO right now, most companies that say that don't have a solid foundation to IPO on and were using current popularity in buying trends to make their money.
6 points wasted on my post that clearly labeled itself as off topic. the moderation system is broken. i offered a possible fix, one that many other have offered up as well.
meta-moderation obviously isn't working. It doesn't have enough teeth to make any real changes. ---

4 is quite good for a return. Many requires 6 to be out before they will let you return the display. This is one reason to try the laptop at a store before you bring it home.
I'm quite happy with my VAIO... then again it weighs 2.7lbs. That's lighter than a lot of books I carry around.
Why the hell does linux NEED commercial acceptance?
Why has practically ever new linux/bsd user in the past two years decided their favourite flavour of unix clone HAS to dethrone microsoft?
I for one don't give a rats ass about Microsoft. I have to use them at work, but you know what its not so bad to use windoze to fill out expense reports or look at badly formatted documents. I'm directly responsible for about 60 servers running mostly equal parts solaris and linux (with some osf and freebsd thorwn in for good measure). They *ALL* have their place.
You people really need to stop looking for some new war to fight everyday... if you got that much energy to spare why not waste it on something that matters almost as much but is more fun, sports teams. Or better yet it spend it on a PERSON you care about.
It contains a one line subject and three words of content. Had it mentioned the special feature of jabber or told us why it is better than other clients it might have been informative... but this, this is just sad.
Slashdot's moderation system still isn't quite there. Hopefully it will continue to evolve into something actually usefull.
Modern UNIX varients aren't really what it was when it was invented... thats okay. Things change and they do evolve. People in the tech field should be the least shocked by change, but I tend to find its usually the opposite. Standards are a fine and great thing but expecting a standard to last forever is naive at best.
Just remember the original mantra of UNIX was along the lines of "do one thing and do it well" very few modern unix apps or utilities adhere to that.
Seems people keep forgetting that the first rendition of Doom was written under NeXTSTEP... and what is pretty much everything that is written on that platform? Oh yes, we're smart today! ---

Oh please. Like there is a difference these days on the internet. When you can go to official goverment sites of other countries and they are either hosted here in the states or in English instead of the native language there is little doubt as to what the net really is centered about.
Is it right? No. But please let us all stop being so naive. ---

My dear dear son... Bush isn't the one who convicted them of the crime. He isn't even the one who will pull the switch. The way the Happy-Go-Luck death system is set up he is merely the one who can grant a repreieve in cases where there may be significant doubt about the case. This isn't innocent until proven guilty, this is the other way around.
Besides 15 minutes for Bush is a long time! That must be 20 or 30 pictures he has to look at to understand whats going on.
I've played doom with 3 machines... all 486s each running in network mode as the same player with a different POV. Basically it sucked. It was pretty slow and buggy and after the novelty wore off you got back to what mattered more. Deathmatch. ---

Its fine to ask someone a few tech questions or even have a basic knowledge survey but it is much more important to ask leading questions... such as "if you didnt know how would you find out?". "How would you deal with ".
Honestly most of the people that I talk to are terrified... you got to get them past that. Because you could potentially be spending 8+hrs a day with this person 20 days a month. You had better like them and they had better like you. ---

So the problem is that you ran a default OS installation on a public address space. Sounds like you don't know how to admin boxes on the 'net. You never run any OS with all the default services turned on... not only is that asking for trouble but shows how little real world experience you have in admining servers.
Locking down a typical unix install takes about 10 minutes... including the compilation of ssh. Learn how to do it, its fricken easy. --- Solaris/FreeBSD/Openstep/NeXTSTEP/Linux/ultrix/OSF /...
How in the hell is your KDE using 180megs? are you sure you aren't counting used buffer memory against the totals? Also comparing the memory usage across the architectures is iffy at best. MSoft OS's don't usually report in the basic tools whats really being used (since they don't report caches).
I for one am completely sick of the attitude among computer consumers and users now that the occasional crash is ok. It is not. No wonder these companies get away with releasing buggy sheit all the time... most people don't care as long as it doesn't crash more than once or twice a day. Any crash is not acceptable.
I can verify this later... I've got a Nextcube with Dimension board in it... as well as some turbo colours. The impressive thing about the NeXT codecs (which are all software, even with the Dimension) is that they pull 25fps on a 68040 box.
Its funny to watch year old computers struggle to pull that off consistantly. --- Solaris/FreeBSD/Openstep/NeXTSTEP/Linux/ultrix/OSF /...

Makes perfect sense to me. You can't make any money off ram and having a large portion of it around is riskier than owning stock in nothing but internet companies.
Now that APPLE actually endorses using 3rd party standard ram its obvious (to me) that they realize this and are expecting the end consumer to buy cheap ram from somewhere else. --- Solaris/FreeBSD/Openstep/NeXTSTEP/Linux/ultrix/OSF /...
