I don't get why people get so excited by the stuph at colorcase and their ilk. Its the same boring PC case with a bit of colour thrown on it. It isn't anything special... hell if it wasn't for the NeXTs and SGIs people would assume all computers had to be ugly ass beige cases.
I am still waiting for someone to make something sleek and stylish enough to where I can place the PC beneath my other stereo componets and have it in the living room. Screw this computers only belong on the desk crap.
Because as a body it can't. Black budget funds are appropriated and given out by select small congressional committees. Whats this mean? It means that a select small group of individuals is responsible for saying yes or no to the requests the NSA makes for funding. The obvious problem with this is that a rather small group of individuals is quite easy to intimidate, harrass or push into doing any action you want them to. Don't expect this to change anytime soon, the NSA is happy with it this way. --- Openstep/NeXTSTEP/Solaris/FreeBSD/Linux/ultrix/OSF /...
Congress doesn't write the checks for the NSA. The come from the infamous black budget, no one knows exactly how much it is and how much is spent on anything.
Just because something has a "unix kernel" doesn't mean it isn't crashprone. NeXTSTEP 3.3 with beta land PPPs would kernel panic on a regular basis on true black hardware. I used to could get older version of NetBSD to crash all the time with lots of net activity... there was the bug in SunOS where copying a binary to/dev/audio would crash it... older linux kernels.96 and so would crash like the dickins. Hell I've even managed to lock up QNX a couple of times.
Your assumption that it is a kernel bug is prolly it in this case, because the reports state its an allocation problem. The allocations of memory and resources are happening at a privledged level in OS X... so they can bring it all tumbling down.
... most coders/admins/geeks have a serious lack of aesthetics. This combined with their inability to make sensible layouts is the reason there are so many damn awful looking web pages out there.
And you know what? Saying that graphic design isn't what you do and then turning around and doing it isn't an excuse. Its like accepting code for a major project from someone who just completed his first 'c f3r dumm1ez' book. --- Openstep/NeXTSTEP/Solaris/FreeBSD/Linux/ultrix/OSF /...
VA's prices are severly out of whack. If it costs that much to "certify" a box as linux friendly then I should definetly get in on this linux hardware business. I recently decided to go with Flashcom for one reason, they were the only people that would put DSL in at my house. Okay. Easy enough, I call and tell them to set it up. They never call back. So I call to ask when its going to happen and suddenly the install is set for the next day from PacBell. Now this is the funny part, PacBell themselves won't install DSL ay my house but as a subcontractor for Flashcom they will? Bizarre. The even better thing is Im 996 feet from the CO. Mmmm blazing speeds... Flashcom won't return my calls to get reverse DNS setup, or email or news. In fact they haven't even bothered to bill me at all yet... so Im not complaining... but only because I don't need any of their services, yet.
Admitting to things such as this is no big deal. The mass public is still too ignorant of what goes on to get what this really means.
It really means they have something a hell of a lot better already working or right there in the wings. Why do you think the US goverment let us all know about Stealth tech? Because its child play compared to the real secret stuph they have going on now. They give just enough to pacify the mass populace and keep people content. --- Openstep/NeXTSTEP/Solaris/FreeBSD/Linux/ultrix/OSF /...
Im getting quite sick of these patents are evil, everything should be free garbage. For the most part (and this means you fellow American) our society could *not* be where it is today without patents and trademarks. They are what helped form and shape our capitalistic society. If you don't like the way its done look at the alternatives... they aren't doing so well. In China things are stolen and ripped off so often there is very little drive to innovate. Japan tends to have even more protection for inventions than we do, and what do you know, they must seek more curious and interesting solutions to problems. Yes the patent office is letting some real crap through but for the most part it is doing a decent job of rewarding those that do innovate and do the hard work it takes to come up with a new idea. I would gather most of you have never seen what the patent process is really like, its not nearly as easy as you may think. I know because I am applying for a couple of patents right now... and yes I do think my ideas are different and novel enough to be rewarded (then again they arent really computer related).

Uhm. Maybe there in the UK... but here in the states finding a corporation with NT on the desktop? I don't think so. In fact of all the corporate setups I have seen there has only been one where NT was on the desktop and it was only there because it was required by one of the apps. Uhm your LD player has optical out? and DTS decoding? how much was it again?
Lets face it LD was and is still RAD. But compared to DVD its just not even worth it anymore. DVD players are getting cheap (the one I payed $540 for last year is now less than 400) and the difference in pricing for having a kick ass setup is amazing.
Besides its the "software" that matters to me. Wherever Criterion goes, I am there.
Uh it doesn't take a 20k sound system to notice the difference. DVD sound is so superior to LD sound that the artifacts are easily forgotten. I guess you just need to hear a couple of titles that make good use of it.
Check out 12 Monkeys when Bruce Willis is in the solitary confinment chamber. Just like in the theater the voice moves around from speaker to speaker.
Or in Ronin how the engine revs in the proper speaker depending on the camera angle. Its the little things that make it so damn rad.
And as far as artifacting... yes they do exist. Especially on shots with lots of hard lines (ie city shots) but they aren't nearly as bad as what you get with say TCI digital cable... and unless you have seen LD piped through svideo in your home you won't know anything except that "Damn! this looks so much better than VHS".
Its a small one (especially if you buy online) but pricing on DVDs tends to be a little too high. If prices were a bit lower I would buy a heck of a lot more. I am of the firm opinion that DVDs should cost about what a CD does... well except for the Criterion Collections... I'll still pay 30-40 bux each for those.
Oh and required DVD recommendations: Das boot, 12 Monkeys, Ronin (great conversion!), Hard Boiled (too bad Woo movies are only in mono) and all 3 in the Miyamoto Musashi series (Hiroshi Inagaki was a genius on the level of Hitchcock).
