  1. Re:Average user? on Ubuntu Continues to Grab Market Share · · Score: 1

Identifying the average Linux user is a lot like identifying the average location for a planet in the galaxy. The term 'average' just doesn't apply to people with different needs and levels of skill. Perhaps you mean the typical home computer user?

  2. "Known problems" list isn't comprehensive list! on Ready or Not, Here comes Windows XP SP2 · · Score: 1
we have a list we can refer to. So many times in the past it was just a "try it and see" situation.
LOL! That list isn't comprehensive. There's software that doesn't work that isn't on that list. I'm not surprised that there's no way for users or sysadmins to add software to that list as they find it. That would be waay too helpful for the community, while looking like a black eye.

Also, don't believe that the optional firewall is the only enhancement to SP2. If it were simply a firewall, most software wouldn't break.

Specifically, Unigraphics NX2 crashes since SP2, and there is no updated fix for it yet. On the other hand, Microsoft doesn't compete with UGS, so there's no reason for MS to list them as 'broken' software...

Sure, UGS should haved fixed their software months ago. Sure, it's not Microsoft's fault that they haven't. But don't think this list is the only problem users will have, and it's irresponsible to pretend that it is.

Fortunately, I have SUS, which will not allow SP2 to automatically install, but I feel bad for the sysadmins that aren't aware of the potential random problems they'll have on that fateful Tuesday...

  3. Re:Oh Canada! on Kerry Concedes Election To Bush · · Score: 1

I can accept that Bush won the election. What I have a hard time swallowing is that I live in a country where more than half the population is willfully ignorant, politically obstinate, religiously prejudiced, and embarrassingly gullible.

Perhaps New England and Quebec could each secede, and merge. All I know is that I want nothing -- nothing -- to do with any of the red states.

Now that wouldn't be politially obstinate, would it? Many red states were rather close, after all...

I'll let you decide on the ignorant part...
  4. Jim McQuillan of LTSP on Unsung Heroes of Open Source Software? · · Score: 1

I nominate Jim McQuillan of the LTSP Project because this project gives the ability to run Linux on cheap hardware.

This provides a great solution for developing countries and underprivileged schools a chance to compete and contribute.

As you can see on the site, he handles the PR side of open source very well, and he still hangs around in the IRC channel and is very friendly and helpful.
