  1. Re:Bye Bye Mac Hardware on Successful PearPC/Mac OS X Install Documented · · Score: 5, Informative

I don't see where Apple hardware is really that much more epensive, especially when you consider the higher quality and better design of Apple's computers. Add the OS and iLife and I don't think there's any comparison. Maybe you haven't looked at Apple's hardware lately, thats the only reason I can see for your statement.
This is a comparison after a quick search on Dell.com and Apple.com...

    eMac - $799 Dell Dimension 4600 - $746
    1.25 GHz G4* 2.8GHz P4*
    256MB RAM 256MB RAM
    40GB HD 40GB HD
    Combo Drive DVD-ROM Drive

    12" PowerBook - $1599 Dell Inspiron 600m - $1368
    1.33GHz G4 1.4 GHz Pentium M
    256MB RAM 256MB RAM
    60GB HD 40GB HD
    64MB Graphics 32MB Graphics
    Combo Drive Combo Drive

*note - regarding the eMac vs. the 4600 processor. I am writing this on a 2.66MHz Sony Vaio that seems for most things no faster than my 1GHz G4 PowerBook, so I don't think that comparing the two processors is too far off.

It'd be great if Apple could get out their hardware sinkig ship and concentrate on bring great softare to different platforms. I hope they don't get out of the "sinking ship". That may be true, but it seems like the future of computing. As much as I love choices I think Apple's integration is a good thing. Right now computer hardware and software is just kind of stitched together loosely. Apple is optimizing their software for the their hardware with a resulting computing experience that is unparalleled. When I use an Apple I feel that it is a quality product. Not just because the hardware seems so well designed and thought out, or because the software works so simply yet effectively. It's the combination of both hardware and software that makes a computing experience, so it makes sense for Apple to control both.

I for one am glad that Apple is partnering with Real, I think they are a rather scummy company and would ruin Apple's image.

Maybe I've only tried the 'wrong' Linux distros. In my experience you first have to find and install apt-get (which IS a big step up from RPMs). From an ease of use POV doesnt that kind of defeat the purpose? OK, let's say I have apt-get already, I want to download a program. first I look around on the internet for the exact apt-get command to type because I don't feel safe just typing 'foo' when I want 'foo 1.3.5'. Now I know what to type, ok, I've installed it. Where the heck is it? I look in the start menu and dont see it. I do a search of my entire computer and find it, but then have to figure out which file I actually click to run the program. Once I've done that I have to put it in the start menu so that it is reasonably accessable. Now what do I do if I decide 'foo 1.3.5' is too bleading edge and I want to untinstall it? Windows Installers are good, though having to uninstall through control panel probably isnt the best approach. Mac's approach to this seems the best, drag folder to applications folder to install, drag to trash to uninstall. Easy. Don't get me wrong, I think apt0get is a great tool, much better than any other current approach to installing programs in Linux, but it's still not as good as the Mac method.

they can offer a sleek eye candy interface (sorry KDE isn't there yet) and, most importantly, allow programs to be installed by dragging a folder (like in Mac OS) instead of the dependency hell that is Linux as we know it today.
