In the past, they were using akamai's domain directly in the images. I had junkbuster filtering out all the images from akamai, and it used to make a big mess of apple's site. I'm not sure when that changed, since I don't got to apple.com very often.

As you say, having DNS resolve a sub-domain solves the probelm, and I would hope that any site that is really worried about security would be able to set up an extra DNS entry to handle this.

Sites like apple use other domains for their images. It looks like apple has recently changed a bit though. Instead of all images coming from akamai directly, they come from images.apple.com.

I would hope that any self-respecting cracker would scoff at using this. So I wonder if it wasn't some self-respecting cracker who came up with this, just to give the script kiddies something to play with. While they keep the admins concerned about VNC hacks, the real crackers can get their work done under the radar, using the good ol' command line.

Most of those people seem to be the ones who picked up a VB book, puked it at back at the screen, and got a Microsoft certification for it. Then they called themselves developers, and they got jobs because a few years back, anybody could get hired in the field.

These are the same people who complained when VB became VB.NET, and became something more like a real programming language. Hopefully, they are dying off now that hiring practices are a little more sane.

It looks like in California, at least, there might be a real legal issue if your server gets hacked, and you do need to notify everyone.

When my (former) ISP got hacked and all our passwords were stolen, they sent us all an e-mail (a month later) telling us about it, as a CYA for this law.

I got a call once while I was sitting next to the answering machine (it's next to the computer), and the number showed up as out of area, so I just let it go.

I was listening to the answering machine, and the woman was droning on about whatever it was she was selling, but she sounded really fake. I decided it was just a recording (maybe even computer-generated, it was so bad), and I was tired of listening to it, so I stopped the answering machine.

Twenty seconds later I almost out of my chair laughing when the "recording" called back, apologized to the answering machine about being cut off, then continued the sales pitch.

The woman really needed some acting lessons or something.

Off topic, but Best Buy's phone number thing is starting to piss me off as well. I always refuse to give them my phone number (they're getting my credit card, how much more do they need?), and they usually just hit escape or something and go on. Last time, though, they told me that if I wouldn't give them my phone number, then they would have to see my ID in order for me to use my credit card. I showed it to him, and he didn't even look at it.

I don't think I get the point, unless it is simply to create enough hassle to make me cave in and give them my phone number.
