Many do offer an "open beta" at the ending of their beta cycle to allow just about anyone to participate. Only problem is if you miss the month or so long window, there goes your chance to try it out.
I wish more companies would offer their games downloadable online. Where the download is free, but you have to pay for an offical key, or request a temporary 'test' key. That way if you just want to give it a try, your not out of pocket $50+.

I'll have to agree with you on the Robot Wars issue. Just hearing it on makes me cringe. I either have to mute it or turn the channel all together.
