G4TechTV Announced
Str8Dog writes "Looks like Comcast has made its plans for the G4 / Tech TV merger public via, G4TechTV.com. The FAQ page list the shows that will be surviving the merger. Call For Help seems to have received the axe. No word is given if the casts will remain the same."
Haven't you heard, it's all G5 these days.
Leo is the only reason I watch the Screensavers and is only one of two reasons I even watch the network (the other is for X-Play). If Leo isn't there anymore, I'm out of there. :-(
I am defenseless. Use your button. Mod me down with all of your hatred.
Was ready to change the channel today at 5 to avoid the horrible robot wars, was suprised to see that Filter was on, a former G4 show. No complaints show far, work out the techtv crap and bring in decent G4 shows. If they keep the right people this might not work out too bad.

All outsourced Indian hosts! In the near future, they'll be replacing the Indian hosts with computer generated people to lower the costs even more.
Uh oh. Poor Leo is going to be out in the cold... Maybe he'll go back to TSS? Wait its not cold in California...
I was *just* wishing for TechTV to start showing up on my Comcast Digital Cable. In the meantime, I was watching a Screen Savers episode On Demand -- the one about security, not 20 minutes ago. I figured it was going to be a lousy glossing over, but they opened by talking about Nessus and spent a good 10-15 minutes going over a nice-looking Windows port of Nessus, Newt. They really seemed to know what they were talking about. A couple of screw-ups here and there, but I was just blown away that a couple of tv dorks even heard of Nessus and could speak authoritatively about it.
Intelligent Life on Earth
Maybe I'm seeing a bad page... but their line up looks only like 4 block hours thus far... oh yea!
Help Brendan pay off his student loans
But I am not a big TV watcher... I have, however, heard of TechTV... I've seen TechTV. I wonder if this will help G4's viewer audience, or if there are going to be people who defect because they are pissed that their favorite TechTV/G4 show got cancelled... I know a lot of people who really like Leo (I think his last name is Laporte or something?), and if he gets dropped I think a lot of them will stop watching the channel.
Just like driving a car:
(D) to go forward
(R) to go backward
still some crappy shows on there. but it seems that they have screensavers, ep, and judgement day, the only shows that really matter.
http://ipod.fresh27.net/
Okay.... so they're keeping the two shows I sometimes actually liked (Anime Unleashed and the Screen Savers), adding gamer-oriented content I never got to see before.
I'm supposed to bitch and moan....... why?
I sadly doubt that one of my favorite techtv shows, unscrewed will be around... From what I have heard it sounds like the new network will be game heavy with a little tech thrown in to balance things out...
I wonder what Martin will do after this? He should get a public access show, as thats what unscrewed resembles now.
I wonder if they know that Motorola renamed the G4 to e600.
It just doesn't have the same ring, does it?
BLING BLING. Meet the architecture that's changing everything.
Without Penny Arcade's Review of G4TV!
I'll bet both the other watchers of the show are bummed out too. :(
I can't stand it! However, I hear the test pattern that is taking its slot is promising great ratings!
Need Gmail?
I think this could end up being The Geek Network... or it could end up being a rehash of all we've seen on both TechTV and G4 (rerun after rerun after rerun). I'm surprised to see that X-Play survived. I seriously wonder how it will fit in with a bunch of shows (Judgment Day, G4TV.com, Cheat!) that basically do what it does in much greater detail (it's gotta be Morgan).
I think the network needs to do three things for it to take off correctly: 1) Bring back Leo as a major presence; 2) Bring back Wil (yes, CleverNickName, even with your view of The Company and The Viewer I think Comcast would be silly not to ask you to return) to not just Arena but maybe TSS, too; 3) Make sure Jim Downs is out and that his ghost never rises again...
And the one thing that would bring many old-school TSS fans back? Find, and hire, Kate and Megan, dammit! :)
I gotta go warm up my TiVo...
Just like when MTV was playing the same stuff on Headbanger's Ball, 120 Minutes, Alternative Nation...
TechTV has 3 anime shows that show up quite often. I will miss "Call for Help" as it was sometimes an informative & fun show.
Also notice that TechLive is not on the list of shows. That was one of my favorites.
"The Tech Of.." is gone, but "Robot Wars" stays?
I knew Comcast was going to screw everything up.
Sweet! X-Play made it through. Now, let's just hope the hosts make it through too. You guys know what I mean. *wink wink* *nudge nudge*
I have put up a mirror at http://mirrorit.demonmoo.com/r_359/www.g4techtv.co m/ :-)
Enjoy
Note to Mods: When I post mirrors, it's a best guess. I don't know for certain whether or not the site will go down!
I was worried about this whole thing, but this seems to be about the best anyone could realistically hope for.
Comment forecast: Bits of genius surrounded by a sea of mediocrity.
I was sorely dissappointed when I returned from an extended leave of absence - years - and discovered that one of my favorite channels, TechTv, had lost almost all the qualities that I used to appreciate. The need for a network preaching tech to the beginning user is past - and some of the content on Tech TV is downright questionable. I have seen very little of G4, but I absolutely love the concept - I hope that G4 benefits from becoming part of a larger network, instead of rotting away in the recesses of a network with an identity crisis. Anime, computer games, and SOME hardware stuff... Not going to name certain shows or hosts (some of them seem to have a fanatical following around here...Leo) That's a network that I could devote some time to. Wired for Sex, Unscrewed in it's current format, and live broadcasts of games I'd rather turn on and play myself? This could fall both ways folks. Let's hope it remains a lifestyle channel, not a public ridicule and stereotypical all-things-that-make-geeks-antisocial montage.
Physics is nothing like religion. If it was, we'd have an easier time trying to raise money!
Hopefully they're only using G4techTV as a temporary name to help guide people through the merger, because that one's just not meant to last. ZDTV was able to handle switching over to TechTV, so I don't think that there will be much of a problem switching over this kludge of a name in the future.
As far as the new lineup goes, it's better, but still a little weak. Some of what TechTV is bringing over might as well be tossed over to a channel in the Discovery family (Future Fighting Machines, Invent this), and some of the G4 shows might as well be scratched (Arena, Players).I hope that they're trying to find some worthwile original programming to strengthen the lineup, otherwise I don't see this merger making the channel any stronger than G4 and TechTV were on their own. Who knows, maybe if they try hard enough they can make the basic programming packages.
Until Slashdot fixes the funny modifier, use insightful or interesting. The poster knows your intentions.
Finally, they're going to cut Call for Help... All Call for Help really was is a rehashed/dumbed down version of the Screen Savers. Admittedly, Leo does/did a great job at running the show, and he is the perfect person to run a show for the less experienced crowd, I just think that if they do have a show of the Call for Help "nature" that they should either make it completely for beginners, or just make the Screen Savers slightly more newbie friendly.
Well, from the times I watched Tech TV and G4, I wasn't at all impressed, maybe now they will have enough programs to fill ONE channel with content, instead of rerunning old programs as endlessly as they plug themselves with HUGE commercial breaks full of their own spots and commercials for their own network. There were a few great shows on ZDTV/TechTV, and a videogame network was a cool idea, but I could have told you they were going to fold eventually, G4 was especially terrible, it only had one or two shows a day and then recycled all it's content for the rest of the 12 hours before it sold it's soul to infomercials at night.
Check the page. Unscrewed lives! :D
;)
That and XPlay are the only reasons I watch, they're both staying. As far as I'm concerned they can just dump the rest of the schedule.

Will that sweet sweet maiden Sarah Lane still be on Screen Savers, and will she dump Kevin Rose for me?
Fascism trolls keeping me up every night. When I starts a preachin', he HITS ME WITH HIS REICH!
No offense to the anime lovers, but doesn't comcast already have other outlets for anime? I fail to see the direct connection to technology, although gaming is somewhat related.
Again, no offense to anime lovers, but it seems to be in places where it shouldn't. I really don't mind it on Cartoon network(where it may belong) but would still prefer other adult swim titles. I guess it's better than many of the new kids cartoons, which can't compete with even my generation's(X) classics.
Is Wil still gonna be there?
Back in the beginning, it was ZDTV. A great network -- lots of useful information, tech news updates (basically a video version of news.com -- updates on the 1/2 hour). It was great. Then it became TechTV, stripped away much of the serious news coverage and replaced it with silly shows about how to use your computer (Screen Savers, anyone?). Now it will basically become a gamer's channel. Probably Ch. 485 on most cable systems. A say day :(.

What the hell kind of name is G4techTV? That sounds absolutely horrible. I like that they're bringing over a lot of TechTV shows (though not unless they bring over the TechTV people with them, including Leo), but the name just sucks IMO.
Combined names work for soul-less huge corporations who merge (AOL Time Warner), but TV stations? How about CBSABCFOX?
Leo Leporte said somewhere on his leoville site that most all of the TechTV talent has been approached about staying on EXCEPT for him.
Basically, that means that the outward face of X-Play, TSS, and Unscrewed would basically be the same.
Wish I had a link to back this up, but it's burried somewhere within his huge messageboard.
Why don't you embrace your slashbotness instead of living in a dreamworld?
I don't know how anybody can call "Unscrewed" one of their favorite shows. Martin Sargent is just not that funny, and Laura Swisher is too something. I tried to watch the show when it first came on, and it sucked. A few months went by and I thought, "Well, they haven't canceled it yet, so maybe it's gotten better." So I watched it again. It hadn't.
If you took everything funny out "The Man Show" and pointed it squarely at computer geeks, you'd have something sorta, kinda like "Unscrewed." But it would probably be funnier than "Unscrewed."
I think the whole merger rides upon getting Morgan Webb to stay with the new network.
There's something about Morgan...
All kidding aside, I'm glad that X-Play and the Screensavers are surviving the merger.
As dumbed-down as some people think the Screensavers is, its the only nationally broadcast TV show that actually talks about computing and the people/culture of computing. It has a very homebrew feel about it. Plus the show is a big proponent of Linux.
I like X-Play because of Morgan and the fact that they aren't afraid to actually criticize poorly designed games.
Chew: You Nexus, huh? I design your eyes.
Roy: Chew, if only you could see what I've seen with your eyes.
While I see a lot of good stuff staying (TSS, G4TV.com, Icons, X-Ply, I see some things that I just can't figure out.
They kept the fucking Thunderbirds?? The Thunderbirds??? I have never talked to anyone who actually watched this show, much less enjoyed it. Same thing with Portal and Cheat.
They should definitely tone down the G4 contribution, as that was by far the weaker channel. And they need to keep the hosts as is if at all possible. I like Leo, but he was a much better fit for Call for Help than the Screen Savers. He is better with the lower knowledge crowd, and TSS was moving towarda a geekier crowd.
"Information wants to be expensive" - Stewart Brand, the same guy who said "Information wants to be free"
All I need is Starcade and Secret, Starange and true to be added to the list and I can die happy. I wonder what'll happen to TechTV On Demand, G4TechTV On Demand?
A show with all new hosts is basically an entirely different show. The loss of a number of behind the scenes people is a shame, but I don't believe it would have as much of an effect (at least not on the types of shows being kept). I really hope they will post who will be staying on soon. I am betting Cat will stay (she mentioned she was in LA over the weekend on today's show); but unfortunately I doubt that will be the case with Leo. I wouldn't be suprised if the younger people on staff (Kevin, Sarah, Morgan, etc.) make the jump, but I don't know if that will be enough to hold me over as a viewer. I almost stopped watching a month or so ago when Leo temporarily left TechTV, and the future looks bleak to me...
Sadly, PS/2 was yet another victim of USB, which doesn't care what you plug into it, the electrical slut.
No Call for Help, no Wired for Sex, and God only knows what's happening to the casts of the shows they are keeping on the air...
Screw Comcast!
No slashdot arcticle at all would be complete without a semi-relevent Penny Arcade link.
"Sic Semper Tyrannosaurus Rex."
On Insight here in Louisville, TechTV is included with standard cable, while G4 is included with one of the premium digital packs. It'll be interesting if they move the new channel to basic or premium.
Any organization that would can Call For Help and Leo but keep Unscrewed with Martin the Dork obviously has no concept of what they are doing.
Be afraid, be very afraid.
I want a new quote. One that won't spill. One that don't cost too much. Or come in a pill.
I don't know. I'm happy about the merger; I think the topics are natural fits, but they BOTH struggled mightily for ad revenue. I keep thinking about the song "Nothing From Nothing Means Nothing." Can combining both really bring a real bump in revenue?

Some people are scratching their heads at the inclusion of stuff like Thunderbirds. I can't blame them.
But remember: Comcast has said all along that the merged network will see new programming. But new programming takes time. In the meantime, something has to be put on air. Here they are, acquiring TechTV, which has purchased a good amount of external programming. Well gee, there's some no-cost programming to stick on air. That's almost a no-brainer.
I dislike Thunderbirds, Robot Wars, and the rest of that crap as much as anyone else. But I understand why it's going to be aired. You can bet that those will be the first things replaced with new merged-network content.
First, I was never able to decide if the writing on most of those shows was aimed about 2 generations behind me or it was just plain awful. Not that I'm Shakespeare over here, but their writing and attempts at being funny just fall flat.
Second, watching segments of an Unreal Tournament match on shows like Arena are just... not thrilling. I can watch a friend play just fine, or even spectating a net match is cool sometimes, but the way they presented it was just bleah. This is partly due to my first complaint above... the commentary during the matches blows.
For me, the coolest thing was their promotional stuff. The animations and game clips that they play between the commercials and the shows (are thos ecalled bumpers?) were very stylish. What a contrast to the actual programming.
The best show they had, hands down, were the old episodes of Starcade. Makes me want to feather my hair and play some Frogger.
As long as Laura Swisher's breasts make it to the new network, I'll be happy...
A "Screen Savers" without Kevin Rose is like a Day without Sunshine! I can't imagine watching some LA "actor" portraying a Silicon Valley nerd.
Best Buy can have you arrested
Thunderbirds...

GO!!
You either need to be in your 20's or 40's to appreciate it.
Mirrored drive doors and quicksilver still come to mind.
They've combined two things I'd never watch into one convenient, easy-to-avoid program.
Seriously, besides the terrible but funny things I've heard about G4, I've never seen it and never really heard of TechTV either. Why would I watch TV when I've got the real thing?
Don't think of it as a flame---it's more like an argument that does 3d6 fire damage
Yeah dude, seriously. I mean, I watch it for a lot of other reasons, but Leo is the man. He's one of VERY few people who actually appeal to all audiences -- unlike Kevin, who appeals to hackers, and Adam, to gamers.
Even though the idea of a huge Technology/Gamer channel is one of the things I've always dreamed of, It's never going to be the same as TechTV was. Gah, I wish Comcast would have just put G4 on another channel and left TechTV alone. They would generate enough profit from TechTV by itself... why change it?
"Instant gratification takes too long." - Carrie Fisher
The international TechTV feed was a severely watered down version of the USA channel. It had a fraction of the shows, heavily repeated. Despite this it did pick up quite a number of viewers.
(posting AC to avoid my employer getting upset)
Steve Gates and Bill Balmer will be hosting a new show on Linux installation, maintenance, and support.
Strangely, I think these may pseudonyms, as the publicity head shots show (1) a portly balding man of middle age with small bits of blonde hair left, and (2) a wiry geeky looking skinny guy with squarish glasses and unkept brown hair. They were both dressed in $4000 Armani suits, so apparently the budget is no longer an issue.
I wonder what their credentials are, though, for being experts at Linux support?
When G4 1st came out i was pissed because i didnt have digital cable in my area...when i finnaly got it, I paid for G4 and TechTV. TechTV is great, TSS is a good show, and they have some other shows i watch from time to time. G4 on the other hand is full of shitty shows with news channel reject interns who couldnt get a job coding in India let alone do a proper news cast. Ill give G4 some credit, a couple of its shows are decent enough but the majority is just a waste of time.
Of course if Call for Help and TSS gets taken off the air ill get rid of digital cable, they are the only shows i ever watch on a regular basis these days. The rest of my entertainment comes from other sources, like my Girlfriend/Son, the net, DVD's, and games. I dont need to pay Comcast (who is already breaking into my house at night and using my credit cards) anymore money for more bullshit programming.
I noticed the schedule, and it's only through the 16th? I know the FAQ says they're keeping shows around, but with a limited shedule like that, does it mean they're only keeping those shows until people are used to the new station? Or are they moving the shows around more, or what?
Not that I don't trust Comcast, but...
Are they going to be able to convince everyone to move to LA? For someone settled in San Francisco, picking up and moving to LA would be quite a shock.
Mea navis aericumbens anguillis abundat
This is a good thing for most of us. I currently have TechTV and love it. Now I will be keeping all my shows I love from TechTV and gaining a few extra from G4. This time of year is the only real reason to have G4...e3 coverage!

I mean it's there in all it's table glory. Yes the craptacular show Unscrewed is on.
I can't believe that one made it really. I mean I tried to watch it but it's like watching an edited for TV porno. A bunch of nudge nudge wink wink crap but nothing serious. I mean this IS pay cable and such and it is scheduled here out east at 11PM EST/EDT so it's not like every kid is up late.
I just despise shows that try to get by on craploads of innuendo.
Maybe it changed but I could only make it through about the first five episodes, if that. Martin was like pulling teeth some days. However he was funny all at once. I swear one time Gary Coleman was going to come over the table and choke the life out of him when they hosted an episode of TSS. Some funny stuff.
As a rock-in-roll Physicist once said, No matter where you go, there you are.
One more reason to hate Comcast. I hate them so much I could spit. They need to be put out of business.

I'm happy to see that Body Hits is sticking around, I appreciate any show that has the guts to show the reality of drugs and alcohol from a fair viewpoint. If I remember correctly it's one of their "British imports" like that occasionally interesting spy show, which may explain their break from the usual US Drug War propaganda on our TVs over here.

Why fire everyone? Is it some kind of new rule that every time a business does something new that step one is to fire the entire staff?
MCI just announced 7500 layoffs today. Another several thousand careers out in the street. Wonderful.
Business isn't willing to pay for products, innovation and careers, so we get brands, mortgage commercials and layoffs.
I met Adam and Morgan and they're genuinely nice people. I'm happy to hear that their show is safe and I hope they'll stay around.

I wonder how this all affects TechTV Canada. They currently run about 80-90% of TechTV's(US) content. Nothing on the TechTV Canada website. Anyone heard anything?

I have only recently started watching TechTV, and I think TSS and X-Play are the best shows on the network. It's good to see them survive.
Does this mean that Playboy will now rename the Girls of TechTV to the Girls of G4TechTV? --- Morgan b00bies, yay!

An 'announcement' of the merger is kinda ridiculously late....considering there's been G4 programming on TechTV all day today. Stupid digital cable listings don't reflect the change...so I have no idea what these shows are... (Not having seen any G4 programming before today.)

Lookie what I found. Here is a press release about X-play... and look what it says about Morgan:
Morgan Webb is well known as one of the true gamer girls in the industry. Objective and passionate, fans look to Morgan for a no-nonsense approach to all the latest and greatest titles. Morgan who will be featured in the July issue of Maxim has also appeared on "ESPN Cold Pizza" and was one of five TechTV talent in Playboy.com's "Women of TechTV" online poll.

From the FAQ: "The new site will incorporate features from both G4TV.com and TechTV.com."
While this sounds great, more often when one company buys or merges with another, the resulting website contains little to none of the archived content that used to be available before the merger. This results in millions of broken links across the web and a loss of vast amounts of documentation and software. TechTV.com has been a fairly useful resource to nubies and even some old hats. It'll be a shame to see all of that content disappear.

If you're not outraged, then you're not paying attention.
I guess that ends Wil Wheaton's stint as a guest on TechTV shows...
So they keep a rather annoying program called "Robot Wars" and dump an interesting and informative "Call for Help"? Bah!
techTV just seems so... i don't know, it's hard to say. it seems like it's geared towards people who aren't 100% up to speed on tech stuff (it's no /.) -- but it also has this whole coke-fueled-programming-creation vibe to it. it just has so much stuff that is really corny / out-of-date / etc.
I mean, I would kind of like to see a TV channel like WIRED magazine. Sure, it's not always the best read, and sometimes its just as corny/yuppy, but at least they do a good job and make it interesting.
-m
No! They can't! They can't dump the redhead with the great snoobs! And the long legs. They can't let her go. They just can't.
Goodbye Jessica.
(sob)...
I hope bell will carry the new channel! Although I think the Cdn Tech TV might be separate - not really sure what with our crazy CRTC and all. I'm just getting to enjoy watch the Screen Savers the odd time.
I don't know that the G4 gamers audinece are as big a viewership niche as the folks that tuned into TechTV, namely for TSS and Call for Help.
Boobs helped pump up TechTV ratings. I don't think there was a small breasted women on the entire network. If they go, the shows will tank on ratings enough for Comcast to cancel them.
What I think will happen is most of the shows from TechTV won't exist in a year, and the personalities that get the best ratings will be cherry picked from the TechTV line up and absorbed into G4 shows, eventually becoming vender infomercials. The rest, well I think they will bail before that time.
I think Unscrewed isn't pulled off well, but both Martin and his endowed co-host are great. Sargent is great opposite a guy like Leo or Pat, or even Megan who I thought was good.
As for Leo, I think he's going to do great off of TSS and TechTV. I hope he gets more air time soon, maybe a reality TECH show?
"Hacker Wars" host? A LAN party gone mad where teams try to hack each other's networks, servers in less than a half hour? Or wardriving contests between two teams?
...most likely, according to this post and this one on his messageboards.
Noo! TechLive did not survive!
Forget these prattling fools of Sarah and Morgan fans, we want our Jessie!

Nope, you are wrong sir. Pat Norton is the geek god, not Leo.
Keep Austin Weird!
Since I think I'm the only one to get G4 instead of TechTV I'll lodge my complaint. G4 is keeping a solid line up with the exception of Sweat (i don't care about watching the dude play games in real life) and cinematech (c'mon 30 min. of nothing but game trailers they don't even have to play commercials since the whole time is one commercial after another)
and my complaint about the one TechTV show I 've seen. ROBOT WARS?!?! WTF I hated them even when they were new Comedy Central's Battle Bots was a much better show. No cheap gimmicks like flame and "referee bots" that would jump into the fight for no reason. Just good old pieces of metal trying to hit saw and smash each other into bits in the middle of a well lit arena where it was easy to see what was going on.
Keep:
- The Screen Savers
- X-play (maybe tone down the infantile goofing a bit)
- Judgement Day / Digital Playground (Somehow the infantile goofing on these shows is funny instead of lame. They have done a good job of creating some Siskel/Ebert chemistry between the hosts.)
- Tech Live
- Deep Thinkers
- Invent This
- Future Fighting Machines
- G4TV.com
- Pulse (But revamp/refresh. We already know Ronilyn Reilly is not going to be on anymore)
- Icons
- Call for Help
- Wired for Sex (actually an insightful show besides the obvious attempt at titillation)
- Unscrewed (I never thought I would say it, but you have to love the show's shamelessness
:)
- Coverage of industry events like E3, CES, Tokyo Game Show
Keep but revamp:- Portal (keep Dave, but refresh the concept somehow)
- Arena (trash the hosts and use PC games that are popular instead of games that MS or whatever game company is willing to pay the most to get their game used on the show)- put some of the geeks from TechTV TSS in charge of this and maybe make it into a show covering the LANparty scene).
Trash:tech tv has been trash since it changed it's name from zdtv. Now it caters to noobz
