It's *not* the reality of our time, it has for the most part always been so.
The fact it, there are fundimentally different motives in basic science and advancing technology. Most "inventors" have always been about the money. Even with basic science, money has been a motivator long before "our time".
I think that in the end this technology will be used not to "enhance" viewer experience, but rather for targeted advertising. Nothing is "innovated" these days for the benefit of mankind, but rather for the benefit of the CONSUMER.

I love it how these companies and even our own government can't keep people from talking about secrets, like it's so fucking juicy that everyone just has to spill it out to the press.
Yes, I'm not a moron, I know these "not authorized" folks are probably explicitly authorized... It's just the whole security "dance" is so fucking silly.
Will other devices be allowed to be used? I hate Apple, and hope other device like the Kindle or Android based Tablets/ebook readers can be used like they are using the iPad now.
Are you a pilot for Alaska? The question might then be relevant, since this story is talking about company-issued flight pubs for Alaska pilots.
Remember, it's a device that replaces company issued / FAA required flight pubs, not a personal eReader for the flight crew. It is company equipment, not personal equipment.
So, my guess is "no", Alaska will not be making their flight pubs available on Kendle of random Android tablets. Why would they?
Speaking of which, a lot of our C17 pilots here at McChord AFB take iPads loaded with pubs and forms and other personal pilot-type apps, on the road with them.
I don't own *any* Apple hardware, I can't afford it. But our guys like the iPad.
...and the pilots can keep it updated without paying hundreds of dollars a year in subscription fees to Jeppesen...
It is unlikely that any FAA requirement for flight pubs can be fulfilled by random downloads from the Interwebs. Alaska is almost certainly contracting with Jeppesen for a lot of their material, as Jeppesen is an accepted and RELIABLE source.
You may be right - Look at all that MS name dropping, and this guy is running this out of his home? He must be one rich guy to pay all the licensing fees, especially if he expects to scale to "millions of accounts and daily hits". Either itâ(TM)s pure Astroturf, or this guy just isnâ(TM)t living in reality.
I thought that a significant portion of their power came from dams.
This does not mean that building more dams is an option.
More likely they'd be looking to supplement with solar and probably something else for the remainder.
This is exactly my point: It simply *IS NOT* realistic to think that renewable sources (you mention solar) can replace 40% of the CURRENT energy needs (not to mention future needs).
The Slashdot headline is (predictably?) not accurate. The Swiss *ARE NOT* ending nuclear power. Rather, there is a proposal to gradually exit nuclear power by not building any new plants. Realistically, even if such a proposal was approved by the current government, given the growing energy needs of society and the shrinking supply / rising cost / environmental issues associated with fossil fuels, I don't see this happening. The current technologies of renewable energy simply cannot support the world's energy needs.
So what's it going to be? Continue with fossil fuels, or continue developing safer cleaner nuclear? Switzerland's five nuclear reactors generate about 40 percent of the country's electricity, and the needs will only grow. What can realistically replace that?
With the world economy the way it is right now, it's hard to do a quality Rapture on the limited budget that God can afford, what with his credit rating in the toilet, and all.
Well, you know, it's been around a long time - it's just not sexy . If it is to compete with current "mind-share", it has to be tied into "The Cloud"...
Is there some way to make such things simple enough for the elderly without detracting from the functionality for younger people?
Giant buttons?
Seriously, there are many levels of devices o the market, from that Ladybug phone with big buttons and a simple contacts list, up to Androids and iPhones, buy the one that is right for you. My 72 year old mom does quite fine with a Android phone, though she says it does "too much". My father the Luddite doesn't ow a cell phone.
The summaty was just fine. The OP was being both snarky and lazy.
It would also help explaining what the Samsung Exynos is in the first place.
That is what Google (or Bing, if you prefer) is for...
A little context would go a long way towards explaining what the hell the summary is babbling about.
It's a development board Samsung's Exynos 4210 dual core chipset.
Hope that helps!
I was pointing it out as a reality of our time...

But the likelyhood of seeing it in the next decade is slim partly because of patents and partly because there is no ongoing revenue stream from it.
Yes, it's true, developing new technology is very expensive, and most people / companies don't want to do it unless they can make money on it.
You cannot buy your way into a good job...
The PHBs with MBAs beg to differ.

You may be right about coal and radioactivity in the current age. But the impact of coal is not just what is pumped out the smoke stack.
Have you seen an open-pit coal mine? Of course, it's "not in your backyard"...
Wait a second...
I thought Groklaw was "winding down". According to the mysterious PJ, Groklaw was going into hibernations....
Now, I for one, think the idea of Groklaw taking on software patent nonsense would be a STELLAR idea.
But.. None the less, it was my information from none other than the Queen Of Groklaw herself via the press... that Grawklaw was dead?
So, what's going on here?
It might have been "multi-layered", but clearly was not "robust".
China, Iran, India, or someone planning to sell it (Russia, Organized Crime, etc...)?
China has the most to gain.

Not a "diversion", I'm simply not going to waste my time trying to have a meaningful discussion with an Angry Troll like you. Goodbye!
Jesus, cool your jets. Do you personally insult everyone you disagree with? Is this the way you conduct all your discussions?
How old are you?
In his situation what should he do?
LAMP stack and MAYBE cloud for web serving *IF* he ends up getting those "millions of accounts and daily hits"
Just give up before he has even started?
If he expects to get there with all that expensive-to-license MS infrastructure, he'd better have very deep pockets.
Astroturfing

And you get that number by what? Anal extraction?
Dear Mr. Troll, unlike you, I read the article.
That's where I got that number.

Staff will routinely be bringing their own devices to work in five years time, according to IT industry experts in the UK
Not where I work. Seriously, a *LOT* would have to change - like a move away from Windows networks, and that's not going to happen (sorry).
