  1. Selling Open Office on Star/OpenOffice XML Format To Become ISO Standard? · · Score: 2, Insightful

    1) Tell them that pirated software is theft - oops flame bait - didn't mean to stir the hornet's nest but it is theft.

    2) Show them that there's a free alternative. They can clear their conscience without losing anything. Yes I know that OO hasn't got all the features but we're talking normal users here.

    3) Show them how beautiful OO is. Maybe I'm biased but to me the interface is simply nicer to look at.

    4) Tell them that they'll be the first on their block. We all like to be 'ahead of the game'

  2. Plasma Rocks on Slack LCD TV Market Means Cheaper Phones And Monitors · · Score: 2, Interesting

I agree about LCD and Projection but I've just paid 1000 UKP for a 26" plasma and it's stunning. It reminds me of how I felt when I replaced my vinyl with CDs. The jump in clarity, specialy when watching DVDs, is exceptonal. The only problem, and I guess that I'm agreeing with your 'broadcast cable' comment, is that you become very aware of the broadcast quality.

  3. Re:How much space do you need? on iRiver H320 (Almost) Hits The Market · · Score: 1

I currently use 23Gb on my mp3 server and it's rising every day. Of course I don't play all of it every day but I found with CDs (I've 500+) the ones I put in the attic were the ones I suddenly wanted to hear!

  5. Maybe I'm a dumb gambler but.. on Online Poker Bots Becoming Problematic? · · Score: 1

I play quite a bit of internet poker - only nickle and dime stuff but the rules are the same. Even with the limited information you get from internet poker as opposed to sitting with my mates over the dinner table I can still 'read' the other players and adjust my game accordingly. Furthermore I, and the other players, will 'change gear' and play differently to confuse the others. Is that player who was playing tightly now playing every hand because they''re getting good cards or are they bluffing? The point of all this is a) I'm sure I would spot a 'bot' b) I'm sure a 'bot' couldn't play the psycological game. The chance game yes, but that's only half the story.

In my experience most good coders are very proud of their work. Whilst the commercial coders may have to let work that they know is shoddy and full of holes go because they have to meet a dead line OSS coders are looking for peer approval and you don't get that with buggy code. Imagine the shortcuts that are being taken by M$ as the pressure to get Longhorn out in time rises

  8. Not overseas on War of the Worlds Remake Already Shot Overseas · · Score: 1

War of the worlds has not been shot 'overseas' - it was shot here in the UK. The Speilberg version will be shot overseas in the US. The word 'overseas' depends on your viewpoint and we're not all US citizens.

My father went to work for Ma Bell back in 1959. On day one he was handed a dollar bill to cover the patent (I think - I was six at the time) on any work he did there> I see no reason why this would have changed in the sixties
