  1. the world is just not ready for this on Dan Bricklin on Software That Lasts 200 Years · · Score: 1

    I totally agree with the author, but i think the world is just not ready for this. I've had some really futuristic toughts while reading the article (one tends to have those when reading about things that have to last for 200 years)

    Until society is less about profit, i don't see such a thing happening... open source might be an answer for this but it won't be enough. There would have to be _more_ open and globally adopted standards and this won't happen very soon (again... profit)

    Take the positive things out of futurama, 1984, bill and teds bogus journey, total recall, or any other futuristic story with an 'evolved' society and we might get there...

    I recently read a reply stating the 60's mentality... the fact that technology will have to work for us as it evolves, though nowadays we still have to work for technology too much

    heck... we still have to work! i'd better get back on that before i write a complete article about this subject :-)

  2. and Red Carpet on Linux Distros for a Windows Software Developer? · · Score: 1

    i do not speak from my own experience, since these things do not work on the 64bit version (yet) but i have seen this work on a friends desktop:

    SuSE 9.1 is definately the distro you are looking for

    install Red Carpet (Ximian) and you should be able to install mono just fine... you can develop just about anything in monodevelop as long as you stay away from the GUI... it will compile (and even run natively in most cases) on win32-.NET

    the GUI part (WinForms) you'll have to do in Windows though...

    ohw and eh, personaly, I would cough up the 99 euro's for the professional version (not required)

    Didn't know that

    after a wikipedia search i found out this is also the case for

    Gigabyte (GB) -> Gibibyte (GiB)
    Megabyte (MB) -> Mibibyte (MiB) (without the sunglasses 8|
    Kilobyte (KB) -> Kibibyte

    and (for now still futuristic)
    Petabyte (PB) -> Petbibyte (PiB)
    Exabyte (EB) -> Exbibyte (EiB)
    Zetabyte (ZB) -> Zebibyte (ZiB)
    Yottabyte (YB) -> Yobibyte (YiB)

    and as a sidenote: this last one is so big that if 10% of the earthlings would have a completely filled GMail box that would be a capacity of just 0,00063 YB

    Does anyone have any invites left?

    I believe that value resides in the HKLM part, and not in the HKCU part. Wouldn't make any sense putting it in a user dependant place...

    On the other hand it would certainly help correcting the problem on every workstation that user logs on to.

    only problem i have with it is that they claim that 1 terabyte = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes

    not even 1,000 Gb

  8. Articles do not mention 64bit on Fedora, SuSE And Mandrake Compared · · Score: 4, Informative

    I installed SuSE 9.1 professional 64bit yesterday on my AMD64. It worked like a charm...

    It detected my SATA controller and HDD in the blink of an eye. (WD on a Promise controller of my Asus K8V mobo)

    Konqueror has a flash plugin installed out of the box. This is supposed to be a big issue on 64bit distro's, but SuSE manages this just fine.

    I installed the nVidia driver update through Yast and reconfigured X (also trough Yast - SaX) with 3d acceleration without a problem. Tried out UT2004 (bought the SE DVD) and this runs very smooth.

    Though I have not tried any other 64bit distro, I strongly doubt they'll be as easy to set up as SuSE 9.1 is.

    Now if i could just get my eMagic MT4 USB MIDI Hub to work i could finally get rid of my Win XP installation... but i won't see this happening very soon.

    Anyway; Nice Work SuSE!

  9. Re:Odd on Do Music and Language Obey the Same Rules? · · Score: 1

    I disagree... You cannot compare ordinary sheet music with midi.

    Midi is capable of doing much more than most people are aware of. It all depends on how far the composer/sequencer went in refining his midi instructions. Notes can be bended, start times can be altered to acquire a certain 'groove', volume can change during the same tones, and there are a whole bunch of audio-effects at his disposal of wich the standard reverb and chorus are even implemented in today's ordinary sound cards...

    This actually applies for synthisized speech too. Many extra parameters (like pitch & volume) can make an artificial voice sound very natural. But these technologies (hardware & software) aren't very affordable for the average Joe (yet).

    >Since I compose my SQL statements in my C++ interface code...

    Bad idea. You shouldn't put any SQL statements inside any other programming language.

    You could store all the SQL statements in an XML file and have some sort of QueryFactory class that reads and executes them (also better for SQL parameters wich btw are never to be concatenated as strings in a WHERE clause...)

    Also, ever heard of stored procedures?

    Only recently came to that conclusion. Bought her 'Black Mirror'... The funny thing is the first hours she played that game, she didn't even know a right-click performed an action while a left-click examined an item. And than she thought she was stuck... imagine her enthousiasm when she accidentaly found out about it.

    Maybe I can even keep her busy with those old Sierra games...

    Next thing you know, I'm in laying in bed all alone shouting 'AREN'T YOU TIRED YET HONEY?'...

    and what would happen if you put ISA's and PCI's together in one box?
