    you can run xp in vmware

    you can have more than one vmware running on the same machine

    vmware runs on linux and on xp (different versions though) but is not free software

    Maybe... but it sounds to me that the thing is not going to be that difficult to hack.

    No encryption, only a digital signature...

    He even admits it at the end of the article.

    thanks for the advice but i tried virtualdub already and it didn't read either the wmv or the mpg and warned me about some unauthorized codecs

    think i'll have to go for that complete reinstall anyway...

    i'm not interested in players

    i want adobe premiere to handle them nicely...

    recently had some real quirks with a take from my wedding that was done by a friend of mine, he used powerdirector or something like that and delivered a wmv and later on an mpg (mpeg2)

    i couldn't import the wmv (only the first 23 seconds of footage were visible) and the mpg doesn't display in the monitor window so that narrows down my options at editing the footage like i want to

    playing both 'raw' files resulted in different kinds of experiences with different players (no sound, played to slow, etc...)

    i'm pretty stuck right now, and on top of all my XP machine is completely screwed with all sorts of video codecs... we even tried 'a capture' from the dv again on my pc iso his: no image!

    maybe it'll work again after a complete reinstall wich i plan to do one of these days

    at home i have a neat GeForce FX 5700 card thingy where i can play the cool games with :p

    at work it's just the integrated (not so) Extreme graphics from intel... and no sound driver installed :(

    the arithmetic of the 3d engine in 32bit doesn't differ from 64bit: it's the same engine with the same algorithms

    and you can hardly compare hi-fi equipment with CPU's, i think...

    What? Like it's OK when they did it for ThinGeek, but now that they also feature a European geekstore it's solely an advertisement and suddenly not that interesting anymore.

    I'm very pleased to find out about that store this way. This is news for nerds, and stuff that matters. Maybe not that interesting for american nerds, for sure, but it is for me and probably a whole bunch of other slashdot users.

    And I think those guys are probably even proud to be slashdotted. Just as the guys at thinkgeek were.

    Power consuming (and even noise) aren't an issue with my AMD64 CPU and ASUS K8V mobo. The Cool'n Quiet feature clocks down the CPU to 800 MHz when it's not heavily used, thus lowering the power usage and the noise (cooler).

    Though mine is a 3200+ (but hey, i'm not Joe Sixpack; maybe i'm Joe Twelvepack *hic*) and that one is getting cheaper and cheaper, you can even get an AMD64 2800 CPU for as low as $140

    And who knows... If Joe buys one today, he can even run XP 64 in the (not so near) future.

    I've never heard a recent pc say 'Accolade Presents...' like the Amiga 500 did in Test Drive (the first one)

    I sold it to buy a Commodore PC-1 x86 4.77Mhz with a monochrome display card... man was I dissapointed back then.

    I'm still in favor of Eric's argument. I don't want to pay for something that isn't easy and straight-forward to install and configure. Cedega's Point2Play's promise...

    I don't want/need no handwriting/speech recognision. I want today's pda technoly (like that new 600+Mhz cpu) combined with a fairly decent keyboard. I liked the keyboard of my psion 3mx.

    The technoly is al there to create a mini pc that is maybe 3 years behind on the recent desktop capabilities. For example:

    - CPU 600+ Mhz (Like that new Dell thingy)
    - Screen 640x480 (or even a mini 16:9)
    - 64 Mb RAM (wy not even 128, or even 256)
    - 2+ Gb Storage (be it cf, sd, or a real hardrive)
    - Mini Keyboard (like the psion had almost 10 years ago)
    - a touch screen to mimick mouse capabilities
    - Wireless LAN (or even Bluetooth)

    And then the freedom to install whatever x86 os I want!

    Man, i would surely pay up to 500/600 euro's for such a device.

    I installed a SuSE x86_64 distro, and *everything* just works...

    even the 3d acceleration after an online update of the nVidia drivers did

    no xxxBSD distro can beat that .. i think

    I can't recall him stating that no real hackers want to use Microsoft software...

    He does mention the fact that google puts a "Don't Be Evil" requirement in their available job profiles. Therefore I conclude that any superhacker can either be good or evil and that the evil ones work for Microsoft :-)

    I consider a guy like Anders Hejlsberg to be a real hacker. And he both designed Delphi (when he was with Borland) and C# (as he works for Microsoft today)!

    Maybe he's evil ;-) I don't know that...

    if some 'famous' (weblog) person doesn't write an article about open source and its benefits/disadvantages, a slashdot user will; just to have it posted when it's been more than one month since we've had this discussion

    so i can proudly say: i did NOT read the article, and i'll probably never will... unless someone replies that i really, really missed something new
