This is something that I've also been thinking about. I think it's a VERY VERY good idea. I'm just not sure how feasible it will be in-the-real-world(TM).
I really wish that there was a chance to implement this model somewhere, sometime.
Most onboard cards suck balls these days, everybody replaces them with a better AGP card from nVidia or ATI. Sounds like people are finally realising that onboard audio is just as bad!
