  1. Re:U.S. on Iran Shuts Down US Virtual Embassy · · Score: 2

I believe the site was a virtual embassy... the US broke off diplomatic relations with Iran since the overthrow of the Shah (and the subsequent hostage taking drama) and vice-versa.
If there are no diplomatic relations, the country cannot set up an embassy, it would have been interesting to see what services were offered with the virtual embassy though.
The Iranians deal via the Pakistani embassy as they are persona non grata in the US and the US deal through the Swiss (and, it turns out, through the former British embassy). Does the US want to re-engage in diplomatic relations with Iran? It would be great if they did.

The Vienna convention regarding embassies states:
The establishment of diplomatic relations between States, and of permanent diplomatic missions, takes place by mutual consent.
The sending State must make certain that the agrément of the receiving State has been given for the person it proposes to accredit as head of the mission to that State.
The receiving State is not obliged to give reasons to the sending State for a refusal of agrément.

An embassy is a diplomatic mission. I don't think there was mutual agreement, no agreement, no embassy I would have thought but I suspect the US knew what would happen, great PR.

I personally assume people carry a smart phone around to make / recieve calls and text messages, the examples that were given - check stocks while walking, navigate to somewhere are handled easier with a smart phone - watch a video too, it would be better with a larger screen but if I'm walking (I think Petersko was building up a scenario to justify having a tablet rather than a netbook as the netbook would be better to watch a movie on if seated) the smaller, easier to carry item would be the phone - plus it is possible to use with one hand.
The coffee shop scenario was a bit silly too imo - I would assume there are tables there, the form factor of the netbook would suit me better.

Tablet evangelists please stop with the coffee shop examples, the tablet is getting a bad name as a toy for the latte set.

I believe the screen size is the part that enables portablity. His suggestion is valid - especially considering how many people use their phone's browser to retrieve information - and get directions... "navigate to blah blah land". They even have trading apps for the iPhone - which has smaller real estate than the phone suggested.

Tablets have plenty of good uses imo but walking and using an iPad for directions when you have a "smart phone" is not one of them, playing the stock market with a tablet while you're walking would not be my idea of a clever way to use it either. Trying to justify purchasing an item by dreaming up scenarios where some other item is not as good is not neccessary, you like the thing, get it - the only justification neccessary imo.

There are definitely uses for tablets, your statement (and the article) was about tablet plus keyboard - I personally would not have someone wandering around with that combination in a workshop or warehouse over a netbook. A tablet on it's own, yes (quite possibly a 7 inch model as it is easier to carry and cheaper - depending on the amount of entering via a virtual keyboard) as the tablet would do checklisting and basic notes while standing / walking better than a netbook / notebook - imo .

The article was also primarily about how the keyboard attachment transformed the tablet to notebook replacement - poor grammar aside, I was not sold by his arguments or his suggested work arounds to the short-comings he is encountering but it's his money, his life style - it's good that he's happy with how he is now working.

Don't get me wrong: I like my laptop. But I do code and I do write long documents on a regular basis. But there are a LOT of people out there who could use a tablet device or tablet+keyboard at a much lower cost and get their jobs done just fine.

At a much lower cost to what? It's a lot cheaper to get a netbook, a lot of noteboooks are cheaper. It appears to me that the reason he prefers the iPad to his MacBook is the iPad has longer battery life, has built in wireless broadband ( "I don’t have to worry about toting another device") and the iPad does not multi-task..... Citation? Iraq tried expanding their border by taking Iranian territory, I don't know any instance where Iran tried to expand their border, I also do not know of any case where Iran has claimed their border extended further than it does (this includes the British naval incident and the hikers - I do not believe they were spies but they were in Iranian territory and Iran got some propaganda for home consumption).

Nato has released a statement informing us that they "lost control" of a drone over the weekend. I agree, without evidence, take it with a grain of salt - I would not trust Iran or "our side" to be honest with us.

The UK embassy invasion was in reponse to the sanctions the UK recently placed on Iran. Iran had voted to expell the UK ambassador last week. Imo the embassy invasion could have been orchestrated by the more hard line factions of their political system to ensure there is no back down from the resolution.
Regarding the blowing up of the missile base, that would (imo) more than likely be by saboteurs - the US has declared (Mr Bush (Jr), continued by Mr. Obama) that they will fund and assist dissidents. Although stating it is not about regime change, I personally find that hard to believe.

I agree it is a fairly conservative path they took. My problem with it all is that the banks appeared to be having problems that arose from taking risks with other peoples' money and assets. Giving money to the institutions that caused the problem will not neccessarily fix the problem, it may exacerbate it - what guarantees were put in place to curb the risk taking?

If the banks get in trouble again (which, imo, appears highly likely considering how the EU situation is playing out... countries bankrupt in all but name), do they follow the same "orthodox" policy of giving money? Perhaps follow the fix-all "orthodox" solution and have another war?

When I saw the one with GW, I interpreted that as a slur on his often questioned intellect - or lack there of (imo he got to be president of the US, I don't think it was accurate) and his sometimes vaguely similar expressions to that of a stereo-typical chimpanzee (helped by convenient photography imo - I have never met the man abut I have seen the handy-work of a media with an agenda).
The one with Barrack O I interpreted as a slur on his colour (his mental acumen has not been questioned - nor should it) I have heard people refering to black people as monkeys - basically challenging their status as a human no doubt - which highlights how fearful and insecure some people are of differences (imo).

The interesting thing (for me at least) is the budget for these movies - 40 million for red cliff - very expensive compared to others like IP Man and Reign of Assassins (12 million). The entire budgets would not even pay for a top line Hollywood actor let alone produce a movie of the standard of the three mentioned. Regardless of whether Hollywood would consider them a flop, I thought they were great movies - just a bit curious why the box office numbers are so low in the US, the movies have all the ingredients to be very popular over there (imo).
