I'm not worried about somebody searching for http. If I was, you'd be right, and I should be modded "-5 Stupid."
I'm more concerned about the fact that if I carelessly (or cluelessly) type
http\\slashdot.org
into a browser---again, I can only test in this on firefox, but I do remember other browsers having a similar behaviour---I will get sent straight to www.microsoft.com. This is simply because an 'I feel Lucky' search for http goes to Microsoft.
Go to their site and have a look. Is there any reason why a search for http should go there? No more than any one else's. So google made a mistake, and they like feedback about that sort of thing.
Or they didn't make a mistake, and they've got a good reason for it. What that reason is I don't know, but if they have a got a good reason, I suspect their definition of good is quite different to mine.
I wonder where it gets it's other money from. The number one result for a search on 'http' will lead to www.microsoft.com. Every other engine leads to sites discussing communication protocols and the like. Go on, try it!
Given that mangled urls in some browsers (FF does this--really can't say about others) will often default to an "I Feel Lucky" search on the first parsable word in the url, MS must get a bit of traffic from this 'quirk.'
I've emailed Google a couple of times about the problem, and I've been promised the team will take my concern into account when reviewing their services.
I'm a reasonably conservative Christian, but the missus and I like to get a bit adventurous at times. If we want to buy any, umm, marital aids, it means we have to go to a porn shop (no! not pawn shop... eew!) and be subjected to a whole lot of stuff we don't really want to be subjected to.
That gave me the idea of opening an adult shop for the more discerning buyer. You know, you could even take the kids in (but i wouldn't recommend it. That's just wierd).
I did suggest it to a few friends, who thought I was joking. That and the lack of capital leave me and the missus to looking forward to the unmarked brown paper bags that turn up at the Post Office...
Their job might be to stop the sale of illegal knock offs. But if we're talking about trademarks (as the OP seems to suggest, but it is a badly written piece of crap that lumps IP into one basket) it's up to the trademark owner to defend that trademark in a court of law and according to due process.
Only a huge mainframe could cope with the vast numbers of bludgers and scoungers Centerlink caters for;)
I'm going to assume the emoticon at the end of your post means you're joking, because a huge number of hard-working Australians use Centrelink services.
In Australia, most students above the age of sixteen are eligible for a benefit (Youth Allowance, Austudy or Abstudy, depending on age and race.) Any person eligible for Family Tax benefit (cut off, I believe, is around $70,000 pa) have received two payments of $600 per child in the last six months.
Not to mention aged pensions, disability pensions, sickness benefits, carers' benefits training incentives, return to work programs and a whole number of things (theoretically) designed to help people who do actually have an interest in getting into the work force, or at least doing valuable work as volunteers.
There will always be those who bludge off the system (believe me, I'm up to the gills with them on a daily basis.) They will always be scoundrels, but at least this way their bludging's regulated.
Mate, I'm recovering from a particularly nasty bout of the flu which has threatened to spoil my five year vomit free record (I'm seriously hoping to pass Jerry Seinfeld).
I went that close to losing more than just my up (down?) time then...
I agree, but please promise never to post this again.
First, the Windows Media Player line refers to a directory, not a file.
Second, even if it were a file, it runs with ordinary privileges, not root. Sure, this isn't great, but it gets around the number one security flaw Windows ever had.
At the time of writing, Adelaide (and only a suburb or two away from Paradise AOG). This seems to be the home of FF.
I didn't pay for the article;-) ---I saw the headline though. It was something, like, 'Howard gets God on his side.'
That's right, folks. You might be into bombing overseas countries and running innocent refugees out of their boats (and blaming them for it) but if you do a preference deal with a Christian based party, you'll have the blessing of God.
Could be worse, I suppose. He could have done a deal with Pauline Hanson as well, and then we'd have Allah on side too.
They hold the one Legislative Councile seat in SA. Bear in mind, though, that they haven't run in a whole lot else before, and they hold a lot of influence, (AOG church members are notorious for doing as they're told) and they've done some pretty fantastic prefrence deals. I wouldn't be surprised to see them win a few Senate seats, and that could easily be all they need to hold the balance of power.
I don't know where you come from, but in the area I'm in this week they have more placards than any other party (it seems) and they made the lead story in the Australian (I think) last week when John Howard did a preference deal with them.
Not to mention they're effectively the political arm of a denomination filled with people who will vote the way they're told to vote.
They'll get a few votes alright. Maybe not enough to win anything, even in the Senate, but they'll be up there with the other minor parties, and their preferences (remember, these folks vote how they're told, so it's 1 above the line) will flow to the Coalition.
Please, don't take it personally. You certainly weren't the only culprit, and I'm guilty of making mistooks too! By the time I got to your post, I'd had enough, and I simply hit the first 'reply' link I could see.

Riiiiight...
Okay, off the topic, but relevant to the site.
This site just managed to sneak a pop under through and then crash FireFox on me. Has anyone else had the same problem?

But not too near the wall.

Until then, it's not illegal. So my point stands.
I'm glad to see someone figured it out. Could you enlighten us as to what actually happened?
Your job is to read the article. You didn't do so, because if you did you'd know that no trademark was infringed, and the patent's already expired.
Being /. though, this still earns you kudos, or at least karma.
No, my job would just get a whole lot easier, although far more boring.
Is this post a dupe? I'm sure I read this same post a few days ago.
Then again, it could be the fact I'm rather sleep and caffeine deprived right now.

Mate, that nearly had me fooled for a second there. I thought I'd done something wrong accessing it from Oz...
But the dust/dandruff is still carbon based.
who can draft you into the army ?
who can deny you a passport and the ability to leave the country ?
We do, we do...!
Sounds like the stonecutters are at it again!
Seems Al Gore's got a bit of explaining to do then...
I went that close to losing more than just my up (down?) time then...
What do you call someone who hangs out with musicians?
A drummer.
The {MP|RI}AA will be banning this next. Look at all that IP that just got thieved!

Be scared, very scared.
I installed an earlier version of Admuncher, and the cow shades weren't optional, so I uninstalled it.
Now I can remove them, I just might have another look. That's one handy little feature.
Oh, wait...
Worked for the Zaphod Beeblebrox clan, fro the seventh through to the first.
