Most on slashdot using windows? Where do you get those stats from?
But seriously, their drivers are open source so I guess it would be possible for someone to create a driver for windows for the pcHDTV cards. It's not like if they were keeping the card's specification a secret.
Actually, they have been doing this forever. They always had the high-end range and a lower range which is between the last generation and the new one. I bought a GeForce4 MX440 with my computer two years ago (not a huge gamer) and I still rarely feel I need more. It was about the same price difference back then. You could have a very high end card for 500+, or the cheaper model for 100. I don't quite understand why this is considered as news, except that a new serie just came out.
I have tryed to play for hours but I never understood what the point was any why could the computer do stuff I couldn't and beat me every single time.
I'm not too sure a dedicated distribution is such a good thing. Wouldn't have packing it with Knoppix be more useful? Booting a PC to play a game isn't the kind of thing I do every day anyway.
I had very restricted access to the web for around 7 months. In the first weeks, I have to admit it was a serious problem. I needed to get some information. Really, TV is worthless: why would I care about meteo anyway?
But after a while, you get used to being ignorant.
RedHat might be Linux's Microsoft, but you really can't deny they really pushed Linux in the early days. Without RedHat, I seriously doubt our favorite OS would be the same today without them.
I don't like it much as a distribution neither (it's not bad but I've seen better), but I still show some respect for them.
As for Sun, well, I can hardly get a point of view on those guys. As a developper, I really like Java and like the fact that they let everyone use it freely (as in free beer). On the other hand, their marketting strategies on everything that is OS or hardware are quite unacceptable. They seem to be very opportunist, but forget everything about the long run and making friends.
I can't accept the fact that they are totally evil, but they sure have no feather wings.
Browsers are not the only problem. Many companies use outlook as a mail client. Someone could simply include a jpeg image to the mail and since images are loaded by default, they would infect everyone. Seriously, the only way around this is to update software. Microsoft already has a patch for this I think.
I use Kopete and I had to configure it to send message when I press enter. I just like it a lot more that way. Multiline messages were nice back when ICQ would prompt you every message you sent. Yeah... I was using windows back in those days... how could I know there was an OS that could actually let you do whatever you want... Truth has been revealed to me.
As long as they comply to the specifications before claiming they render HTML, I agree. I don't actually care about the rendering engine that is being used, I just feel Gecko is the most viable project right now and since it's Free (as in Freedom), there is no reason it will ever be stuck behind as IE currently is.
It might not be perfect right now, there are still a few minor problems, but it's still a lot more compliant than all other browsers I have used. The fact that a large company uses the project can only make it better. Since the departure of AOL/Netscape Mozilla barely has financing. If Google decides to invest some money in the foundation (which is possible), they might actually be able to have more developpers working full time on the browser and make it even better.
There is no such thing as free beer. At some point, someone has to pay for it. I do wish this wasn't true.
I rarely see web applications that require ActiveX components. I have been using Linux with Mozilla for a very long time and I never really had any problem. XUL is nice but it's not really meant for web applications, it's meant as a rendering engine for mozilla. Java applets have been dying ever since they appeared. I really like Java but I think applets simply are not a good environment for the language.
The true future of web applications relies on XForms and SVG. It's only a matter of time...
From what I understood by reading the article, they might actually be planning to release some sort of modified version of Mozilla. Having more browsers using the Gecko engine sure can't be a bad thing. Plus, it will put some pressure on Microsoft to improve their browser and actually support standards.
If Google places it's name on a browser, it will sure become popular in a matter of days.
The success of standards depend on having multiple quality implementations. Right now, this remains a problem as only Mozilla does it right (Safari seems to be fine but I never really tested it).
There is already an other space telescope on the way, it's called JWST. Of course it has a very high price, but isn't understanding the origins of the universe worth it?
I will always ask myself where the original matter is from and why was it there in the first place.
I think they should just release the demo for linux anyway and mention that it won't work with nVidia. And they should place a link to complain to ATI for they lack of Linux support.
Anyone running Linux with an ATI card knows that their drivers are worthless. I heard they were getting better but I still havn't heard of anyone satisfied.
I have been using mozilla since 1.2 and I also use the mail client. To me, firefox is plain useless. I think firefox is mostly aiming for windows users that use an other mail client or those who don't actually have a real mail account. I don't think Mozilla is bloated. They reduced the size quite considerably in the last few versions, and speeded it up.
They are talking about the database server, not the browser.

I think 3 would be enough...
Actually, the images show they were using windows...

Well, this sure is one step ahead. Last version I used as outlook 2000 and that was for a day until I removed windows from my PC at work...
Actually, they might simply replace Solitare for Duke Nukem Forever when Longhorn releases.

Any kid should know how to use a shell. If you got enough time, teach them how to use VI ;)

Mod this guy informative! I have already spoken (a lot) in this thread.
WOW, that sure was a nice link. I didn't think there was actually some work going on. It seems like the rumors contain some truth.

RTFA
They plan on releasing open source and submit a patch for mplayer themselves.
I'm not saying I'm all for google (I actually hate the concept behind GMail), but for the masses, it can't be bad, or at least, not worst then IE.

As long as DRM does not block Free Software, I have nothing against it. Why would I fear the fact that they hunt software piracy if I don't do any?
Firefox -> 8.8M
Thunderbird -> 9.1M
Mozilla -> 12.0M
These are the numbers for Linux.
But anyway, on a 80gig HD, does 2-3 M really make a difference?

UNIX was licenced to the Santa Clara Organisation if I remember well, and those guys are not SCO.
