They always demand that the rest of the world believe them, and they are on record as saying their primary goal is to wipe Israel off the face of the map. I am simply believing them. (I realize this is borderline on straw-man territory). Honestly though, I think Ahmadinejad really is that much of a nutcase as to do it. While most of the leadership may not be so extreme, he only needs one line through the chain of command that will not defy him to carry out a first strike. Now, it may be that there are no lines through the chain that will not call a time out and refuse to launch a nuke, but I think that there is at least one.
I would think it more likely that the rest of the Arab world would lean very heavily enough against Iran launching a first strike to prevent it than internal resistance preventing it. -nB
I would not call being slightly sarcastic as trolling,
Your entire comment was not received as a troll, just the quoted part. But I will agree one man's troll is another man's snarky...
And besides there is only one country I know of that has ever proven that it is irresponsible enough to not only use Nukes but to use them against civilian populations.
And, as I said, the whole world noticed. It scared a lot of people, badly. A testament to this is how they've never been used again, by anyone. The two weapons dropped by the USAF were very small yield by today's standards, and yet even a device of that same yield would be "instant war crime" territory.
But if Israel and Iran are fighting and only one of them has nukes then there really is not much of a deterrent where they are concerned.
The deterrent is everyone else who has nukes telling Israel to keep it in their pants, so to speak. In all fairness while not blameless the Israel nation has been quite reserved in their use of military force capability.
I too would prefer nukes did not exists but as long as some countries continue to have then then it is only logical that the others would want them as well.
We agree on this, however, that does not extend to me condoning the others obtaining said technology. Non proliferation means no one with the tech makes new ones, and no one without the tech develops it. -nB
"Having a dictatorship ruled by religious fundamentalists of the worst kind" Yes I also worry about the USA, a very frightening country.
GWB is not in office any more...
Also, honestly I must agree with the GP. There is already enough deterrant in the world. The US is not the only possessor of nukes. Iran wants nukes, has a stated goal of wiping Israel off the map (who also has nukes, whether or not it's an official position). WTF do you think is going to happen? The only real reason Israel has not been overrun is because they have a MAD device. If Iran gets one they almost certainly will attempt a first strike. After that the Pandora's box is open. Nukes have only twice before been directly used in anger.
The entire world took heel at that.
If I could wink an eye, snap a finger, was granted a wish, it would likely be to wipe out all nukes in the world, and make it impossible to make more. I am almost as pro nuke power as they come, but by no means does that mean I approve of atomic weapons. The only thing they are good for is to use their cores as power sources for RTGs on space probes, and as fuel for power plants. Swords to plowshares. -nB
Yes. See the entire US isn't a shithole. The shithole part of the US is over there [/waves hand]. I'm over here [/waves other hand] where it's all better and we are enlightened*. But really when you think about it [/flails arms] the whole world is a shithole compared to us, and that's because we had George. George was a great man. He made people happy. George saved the world, then he died and the world turned back to a shithole. George also was an awesome narrator for Thomas the Tank Engine.

Hell one full test cycle here lasts about 2 months. We have three levels of tests that are continuously run: - twice daily (fully automated, no humans needed, naturally this limits what we can test, but it still catches lots of bonehead type errors that can happen). This test has to pass before your dev branch can even be checked into the main trunk project branch. - weekly. Run by a team. Must pass for project branch to check back to main tree. - full regression (the big 2 monther). Finds the little bugs that may otherwise be missed. -nB
I was in such a place as well... I installed SVN on one of my dev machines and made backups to USB keys. A couple of the other people on my team used my SVN server as well. All 4 of us considered the place doomed, but being employed is a good thing, even if it makes scheduling interviews challenging. Last I saw, they were still in business, and their website is still crap. I still think they're doomed.
In a parallel thread someone mentioned different parts of a/the company using different tools. We use ClearCase, but there is a team here that still is using VisualSourceSafe. When asked why they always clam up, but I am convinced it is because they don't want to share some of their source code (in-house tools only) with a couple other teams that also produce in-house tools. It's the whole ricebowl phenomena. -nB
I think the thinking goes that you are not required to be notified that you are a person of interest. If they do not charge or detain you, I don't think you are legally entitled to be notified (*should* be notified, yes, required? I don't think so). IANAL, if there is AL here I would appreciate it if they could confirm this.
You are making the assumption that even if you don't use webmail or IMAP that there will not be old copies of your mail floating around. As we all know google does everything fast, except deleting data. If you really want to be secure I would suggest using your own mailserver, but this is not realistic for 99+% of the population. Heck, I don't even own my mailserver (though it is private, on a virtual host on another ISPs machine). -nB
The only time I've seen this work is when you show/tell them your offer, and tell them you're declining it (without asking for a bump). This only works if you are friendly with management. It's a not so subtle hint that you are worth more, but would rather stay where you are. Never seen an outright match with this approach, but I have seen "adjustments" to reviews that indicate management was paying attention.
Loyalty has paid off *very* well for me. Not in the short run mind you, but when it really counted (twice). First time: Stayed in a not very good job, for a very good manager, just because he asked me to. Once the project I was on was done he gave me an excellent professional reference and I went on my way. FF about 8 years and I was facing being laid off in the division of the company I moved to. He found out that I was in a group that was busy imploding as fast as it possibly could and hired me into his division, no questions asked. Couple years later he's climbed up the ladder quite a bit (as have I) and I found myself in an environment where I knew I was going to get myself into trouble (incompatible middle manager). Went to my old boss and had an "open door" meeting with him. Laid out my issue and told him that same as last time I'd finish the project I was on, but then it looked as if it was time for me to move on again. His response was to move me under a different manager, in a different job role, with a different position, just to make me happy and keep me there.
I can't help but to think that had I not stayed around way back when, and had bailed at a critical juncture, things would be much worse right now.
I think the main thing people miss, is that if you have a good relationship with your boss and upper management, while you can not count on that for more pay (never seen someone not burned on that front), you can count on them for fixing almost everything else, making the environment, and job you do, so enjoyable that pay is not important any more.* -nB
* obviously it is important, but there is a range of pay that applies to any job, if the job is awesome and the environment is awesome, then being at the lower end or middle of that range really isn't a big deal.
Then something other than funny that is a +1 then. Some way to acknowledge that the comment is not being taken seriously, not immediately funny, but not worth a downmod either... That said I saw someone else suggest that all users have mod points that are counted separately and are fractional, though if they are counted separately I don't see why they would need to be fractional.
I see what you did there (sadly this is an artifact of how popular/. is and a commentary of how much people value being heard/replied to, etc.). I don't see an easy way to fix that without breaking a lot of what makes the moderation system and discussion here so good as well.
Not that I like it, but I'll happily live with it for the sake of not breaking other stuff.
I think the comment and moderation system is fine. I think the only tweak would be that there be an additional filter available that filters based on karma, thus the real trolls are de-emphasized, but the regular comments still get regular mods. I would like to see a +1 troll mod, because let's face it there are some posts that are a troll, and yet still interesting. I generally browse at 0, though ymmv given your worldview.
